Range Extenders for Electric Vehicles

While plenty of options for plug-in vehicles now flood the market at seemingly low prices, drivers soon realize most electric options only get them thirty to eighty miles on a single charge. This reality leads most to annoyance and anxiety over the lack of charging stations and the very real money they are spending every time they fill up with gas and electricity.

In theory not too efficient converting DC from lead battery into AC to be converted back to DC by the car's own inverter that charges the LI battery. Also the extra weight diminishes the original range of the car. Not convinced.

great idea for older ev's with low range, but probably not worth the hassle with the newer high range ev's they are making today and they will only continue to increase. i think manufactures should build in battery ports so you can add range just by plugging in an additional battery packs. wouldnt that be nice

Me too having an electric car, and it's not a Tesla. This lead acid crap will increase the vehicles weight, making it inefficient. Perhaps the range will even drop with all these extra weight. I think you own an EV without knowledge of batterys and energy density. The next problem: With those batterys, you can forget fast charging. A lithium cell can be charged at at least 1C. A modern lead acid or AGM with only 0.1C. Enjoy driving with less range and a 10 times longer stay at the charging station...

Seems like you could charge a separate bank of super capacitors (using 2 charge stations while on a road trip), and let the capacitors bleed into the main battery using the same method as regenerative breaking. The most dangerous part of this video is the custom cable with male plugs on each end. please just use J1772 and an EVSE for all EV charging.

I had an idea, I’m sure I’m not the only one, where it would be nice to be able to rent additional battery capacity to support a road trip. That way you could buy a less expensive EV that you can use locally but then when you want to go on a road trip say for a vacation you can rent one of these batteries to extend your range. Hopefully it can be made to work with the dc fast chargers.
@SecondLifeDesigner

I have thought about having a small two wheeled trailer that would have a battery or batteries that could be plugged into the car as you drove to extend the range of EVs and that would also have some storage room for suitcases. Combining your idea of renting additional batteries and my idea of a small two wheeled trailer would be great for a company like U-Haul. U-Haul be great in that you drive to another city and then just swap one trailer for another and carry on your road trip.

iv got this idea too and every body shot it down. they said that the extra weight offsets the additional advantages. But to add to this idea is i can see that we has level 2 charging using s 240v sinewave converter to charge the car. a better solution is to use DC charging functionality(yup if the car is not dc this wont work.). you need to step up your voltage to 480v using multiple regulators in series and that could fast charge your battery in minutes instead of hours. And this is more efficient than inverter. it is said that sla is 50% more heavier than lithium per watt. but its more dense so it dosent need to much volume.

He created a required led acid emergency backup power bank for Tesla. Which is required. Don't do 600 pound that'll charge battery 100%. Added weight will affect range of car and instability. Go for 150 pound/75kg emergency backup led acid battery 🔋 that'll charge the car 25% in time of rare emergency. You don't need to carry so much extra weight. But a backup is always required. Portable generators add 12 miles/gallon of gas in around 3 hours. That is much better than carrying 150pound battery 🔋. Wind power can possible charge the car enough to add 5 mile/hour but I'm unsure how many miles can be added using this method. Assuming we put 3 fans below headlight in front of car 🚗 and put black grills to cover the fans from front. So fans will be inside the car and all you'll be able to see are the black grills and headlight.

Check out the Lead Acid Battery charging lead going to the mains (10:30). A male wall plug with heavy duty pins (no big deal), and at the other end yes, another male plug with exposed heavy duty pins! So no safety problem there then? Jeeez - and he thinks this is marketable, doh! Then later he tells us he hopes to be able to charge AND drive at the same time? Is this for real, a charging current going into the Li-On battery whilst also going out to the motor simultaneously? And then there are the losses in efficiency to consider, converting from one to the other, with an inverter in-between for good measure. Why not just put a petrol generator in the trunk and be done with it, or if you want to be environmentally friendly stick a wind turbine on the top of the car - then drive around, and let it charge the batteries as you go! That was a joke btw, before you all reply....

Ok hold on a sec. Take out those lead acid batteries put some lithium ion batteries like Battle Born. They will last longer then those heavy lead acid batteries. Lead acid batteries even marine batteries are only good for out putting a surge current not long current. For those amount of lead acid batteries you have and swap them out for Battle Born one you can get like 5 time more output power than what you currently have. And since you have already cut into the bumper try integrating the charging cable for the EV battery so it's not hanging out the car. Other than that not bad. Lead acid batteries 60 pounds Battle Born 30 pounds Cut weight saving in half literally, just a bit more expensive. Or just but Tesla modules and add them to the EV battery / plug in battery

At first i thought this guy was crazy but the more i think about it the combination of true storage batteries that like to output small amounts of power for long periods. On the other hand, they have now started to recycle lithium based batteries. But if you were going to do it then it would be much better to deliver the power directly to the speed controller, bypassing many inefficiencies in the inverting and the charging systems, not to mention the inefficiency of power flowing in and then out of the lithium batteries. I was thinking briefcase generator or micro gas turbine generator if you could afford one.

Charging, Discharging, DC to AC and AC to DC are all lossy processes. He is doing all four. He can totally eliminate them by taking the DC from the add-on battery and ORing it with DC from main battery. You would definitely void the warranty doing this but the current technique is too wasteful. Even after all that, I think the sheer weight of those batteries will eat into the the range. So net gain will be small. Full marks for enthusiasm though.

This means that, in order to reduce our range anxiety for 5% of trips, he wants us to drag around an additional 600 lbs thus reducing the range for 95% of trips. At 600 lbs it is not something we would take in an out of the car according the trip distance. Sounds like a poor trade. Also, DC-to-AC and AC-to-DC conversion each have ~92% average efficiency - 0.92 x 0.92 = 0.85 i.e a 15% loss before the power reaches the car. Further, to use the extender, we have to stop and plug it in. No thanks.

I am not quite sure I believe what this guy is saying plus all that additional weight is going to cut down the range of the car. If what he saying is true that pound per pound lead acid batteries hold as much energy and lithium ion batteries at nearly 1/20 the cost of lithium ion batteries and take up less space as lithium ion is you just add a few large capacitors to an all lead acid battery system and use the capacitors for short bursts during acceleration to match the performance of an all lithium ion system. Plus the capacitors are much better at regenerative breaking in that they can be charged quicker than lithium ion batteries can be so you get more energy out of regenerative breaking using capacitors. That being said I don't think this guy has his facts straight. Just did some quick research pound per pound lithium ion batteries hold at worst over twice as much energy and at best over seven times the energy of lead acid batteries. His system of lead acid batteries if they weigh the same as the car's lithium battery could only charge it up to maybe half and that is if the car had a really crappy lithium ion battery. If it had a good lithium ion battery his system would be able to charge it up one seventh. The amount of range you would lose would not be worth carrying all that extra weight around in lead acid batteries.

@135iN55
@135iN55 4 жыл бұрын
@@tonycavez Dead cells cause large banks of cells to be permanently shut off. Large multi-cell batteries have banks of cells in series and in parrallel. Since Li-On cells are only 3.7V nominal, there is a huge series requirement to create the triple digit voltage required to drive the motor. Any dead in-series cells rapidly accelerate the death of the battery since all the other cells in series must try to push their voltage through the dead cell, attempting to charge it as it discharges them, and the final voltage is reduced by the number of dead cells, likely falling outside the minimum voltage requirement for the battery or bank. The controller will permantly shut of all the good and bad cells in that circuit, resulting in massive capacity loss best case, and a completely dead battery worst cast. Ever time it happens, chances of killing the whole battery dramatically increase. Parrallel banks or parts of them are easier to shut off in isolation, and doing so usually only results in permanent capacity loss. Worst case, and not uncommon is thermal runaway killing all occupants instantly, and exploding and rexplodind for days. Firefighter are trained not to intervene or help, as it is too lethal.
