Күн бұрын

I built the first ever Cordless Tesla and did a 1600 Mile Road Trip without ever charging the car.
It just made perfect sense to me to adapt a power plant generator to my modified Model S Tesla and do a road trip.
This is the first version of the cordless Tesla which is burning gasoline to charge the car instead of the conventional plug-in charger.
The car not only charges itself while it's sitting and parked but also while driving the entire time.
Just for reference with the mpg number this car is almost 1000 horsepower all wheel drive, I didn't go into those details in the video because I didn't want to make it confusing.
This is not my typical video but I absolutely had to document my progress with my project here and share it with everybody.
To clarify I did have to stop for about 5 to 6 hours a day while the car continued to charge itself back up since it's using more energy driving then it's making.
All of those stops and lack of sleep is one of the reasons I was dead tired for almost the entire trip, some of those days I was so tired I could barely speak.
I also made sure to make a few stops along the way that I thought were pretty cool to make the video more exciting.
I'm curious to hear what everybody thinks in the comments below please don't hesitate to leave your opinion I think you are going to like what I have coming in the near future with this car.
Heres Part 2 of the Cordless Tesla.

It was hard, and I cut a lot of those details out of the video but when I muffled it down it didn't have enough power to make the wattage I needed. It was very close, the unit is very small and custom built so I had restrictions and I also have time restrictions. I think the next iteration would have to be quieter. Perhaps strapping two Clydesdales to the front, and have them pull the car. This will then give you the range and the cost savings on gas. But you might have to travel with bales of hay. You might even be able to call it a Mustang.

"Full throttle". That engine would be running at the 3600rpm ( "universal" speed for 60HZ electric motors matched by small gas engines used interchangeably with those motors) that it's designed for full time operation. You would be confusing that with running an engine at high rpm full throttle which it was designed to do only briefly.

@@Iahusha777Iahuah Look at 0:45. That's a standard inverter generator setup. Based on the orange color, location of the fan vent at the top of the shroud, and yellow cap on the oil tube it is very likely a WEN GN875iX open frame inverter generator. Champion and others have similar generators from the same factory, but in different colors. Perhaps the wires were extended to hide the inverter module under the floor panel, although the original wires might even have reached unchanged. The only real modification was that the quiet stock muffler was replaced with the noise-enhancing megaphone muffler. The spring mount, shape, straps and rivets match the "carbon fiber" look mufflers sold on Amazon for $35-$45. From the timeline and screen displays in the video he was pretty clearly only charging while parked. He just plugged in a standard charge cable to the original generator receptacle and used that, without touching the car's software or electronics. My guess is that he dismounted the charging inlet and rotated it to face the trunk interior. Perhaps he used a relay to fake unplugging the cable, or a lever+bracket to unplug the J1772 connector slightly, but he might have simply gone to the back of the car to plug the cable into the repositioned inlet after he parked.

That jerry rigged setup is just like a diesel-electric-locomotive but with an underpowered engine and a huuuuge battery xD

The Tesla is roughly a 25-30 mpg (US) car by petrol to electricity conversion standards. It weighs 2 tonnes though so will have quite a bit of rolling resistance, and a similar sized petrol engine vehicle will use about the same. You could probably play around with the amp charging rate to see what puts most energy in the battery for how much fuel the generator burns.

GM made a lot of effort to get the Volt working just right. The ICE was carefully selected to be quiet and efficient whilst producing enough power to keep up with average performance. I feel it is highly likely that this consideration limited the overall performance that resulted, as they didn't want to end up fighting with customers or lawyers. I've always been fascinated by this engineering niche, and it is great to see someone tackle it in such a simplistic way. Clearly a bigger generator is needed, it'll make more power and less noise, and a longer exhaust will be necessary. There seems to be enough room, lets see the next installment.

I do not build all of it by myself. but I build EMS (Energy Management Systems) and real-time battery Monitors. because we use conventional ICE cars and then modified to an electric cars. so we can control everything we want. we can use Constant Current (CC) state for the charging process which means the generator works at the highest efficiency then shut down the generator. when the battery is below 20% the generator automatically turns on and charges the cars.

@@OersJ yes - the best car engines manage 41%, not accounting for generator losses (5% or so).

Good proof of concept. I think a commercial conversion kit would need a 2-cylinder, quieter engine, closed hatch, and tailpipe below the bumper.

The build is incredible! Seeing it in person in detail was very impressive. I can't wait to see rev 2.0 and the jet pontoon will be on the water for next time! I'll see you around.

Awesome content! Thanks for helping and visiting my friend Nick! Two of my favorite stops, Mackinaw Island and Nick's house. Can I ask what waterjet you use?

You do know he probably faked it right? He never shows how he actually tapped into Tesla's electrical system to charge the battery. Until he actually shows this and proves his wh/mile efficiency improves with the generator off vs on while driving I'm inclined to believe he faked it and just simply charged at regular chargers off camera.

@@ElectricGlider2016 so I'm the jet engine pontoon guy he stopped at in the video. Also an electrical engineer. It is 100% is real I assure you seeing it first hand. There's a reason he can't show all the details yet. Just hang tight for upcoming videos. He's not a guy who fakes stuff, look at his other videos...

Did you only use the STATER on the motor? I would try using alternators and convertors in the wheels?
