Hey Jeff! Gender is kind of like a set of feelings about somebody's identity. If you feel most comfortable presenting as a man, having a male body, and doing things you perceive as masculine, that means your gender is male. Most people are comfortable with the gender associated with with their sex (the social man and woman things we're all brought up with), but tons of people, like me, have a gender different from their sex. These people just happen to have a sense of self different from what's associated with their sex. All of this is just normal human variety, though if you're somebody who's gender aligns with their sex, it can be understandably difficult to digest.
@vladgaming62854 жыл бұрын
this video didnt really help me so maybe someone here can. im trying to understand this stuff a bit better and genuinely learn the counter argument so to speak. i study biology pretty heavily and even with this video im still only seeing either your male or female. it seems to me that the use of a person being less male or female in terms of how they act would still mean either one or the other. even if your neutral biologically that would still mean your one or the other. i mean this with all due respect.
@amazeorg4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question! The truth of the matter is that the biology of sex and gender is really quite complex, and far difficult to put in a small video like this. Even when you look at sex we tend to assume people are either male and female; however, what we're coming to understand is that even sex is a spectrum, with lots of people living as intersex, and not either/or. When we can start there in understanding sex, hopefully that can help explain how gender too can be equally diverse, with no one really having any "biological neutrality". Hope this answer helped; kudos to you for continuing to study these things!
@okbuddywhattheflip2 жыл бұрын
Okay, so, most of the times, you are either male or female, because those are sexes, not genders. Even then, intersex people exist (someone born with neither male or female chromosomes, biological features that don't align with their sex's characteristics such as facial hair or lack thereof, etc.), but it's different from gender. Gender is more of an internal feeling, and what you wanna do is think of it as a spectrum with boy on one side and girl on the other. Some people can be on the opposite side of the spectrum as their given sex is, some people can be in the middle or leaning more to one side than the other, some people move fluidly around said spectrum at different times, and some people (like me) are entirely off said spectrum and don't have a gender at all. Hope this helps!
@vladgaming62852 жыл бұрын
@@okbuddywhattheflip ive learned a bit more since i posted this but thanks. going to point out a few things. intersex is still either male or female. its just slightly more difficult to tell. usually the process involves a genetic marker test to check chromosomes or a test of gametes. chromosomes only come in x and y in humans. their are 5 or six viable combinations that result in either male or female. gender may be a spectrum to some but sex itself is either binary or non existent such as with bacteria. from what ive learned since this sex and gender cant coexist if you buy into the spectrum idea. im ok with it to a point until it takes a jump off the proverbial cliff. also sex and gender in the science fields also cant be reconciled to work with one another. one lies in the field of biology and is more concrete and provable while the other is more a kin to psychology hence it becomes slightly more chaotic if you will.
@okbuddywhattheflip2 жыл бұрын
@@vladgaming6285 I'm glad you've learned more, but I respectfully disagree. Intersex isn't male or female because of how many layers there are to biological sex, and if you have a bunch of overlapping traits, you couldn't be either one. Second, I'm sorry, but I don't know what you mean by proverbial cliff. But sex and gender can definitely work with one another. Psychology is a kind of science, and if sex and gender couldn't work with each other, the idea that most females are also girls and that most males are also boys wouldn't exist. Everyone would be all over the place, if that makes any sense

I’m a cis female but I use he/she/they, I don’t know how it feels to be non-binary or trans, nor do I fully understand it. But I’m supportive to all my friends who are transgender. That’s how easy it is. I use the pronouns and name they prefer, I educate others, and I speak up against transphobia. While it is of course important to treat everyone with respect, I don’t think you should be teaching children that “gender exists on a broad spectrum”. There are two genders and I have yet to see any proof of there being more than that.
@jacobharris18465 жыл бұрын
There are two biological sexes if you don't include hermaphrodite. Gender refers to the masculine or feminine traits of a person or thing. It's possible to be a masculine female or a feminine male, the gender part, although informed by biology, is also informed by a variety of environmental factors like culture or diet for example. Most of the issue comes from incorrect use of language. It's incorrect to say that there are only two genders because gender is a term for behavioural expression, not biology. There are only two sexes. A female is a typically feminine human and a male is typically a masculine human although it's possible for either to be more or less masculine or feminine than the other. Does that even make sense, I think I've confused myself now!!??

Hey, I'm still a little confused and you sound like a person to help explain. What is the difference between male gender and female gender and other genders?
@okbuddywhattheflip2 жыл бұрын
@@robertclement1107 Okay, so, just so you know, male and female aren't genders, they are sexes, that being what you were born as and what parts you have. Being a girl means that you align with the gender that people with vaginas normally have and being a boy means that you align with the gender that people with penises usually have. Now, think of gender as a spectrum, with boy on one side and girl on the other. People with other genders are in the middle. There are also people who move to different parts of said spectrum at different times, people who are in multiple places on it at once (bigender or trigender), and people like me, who are completely off of the spectrum and just don't have a feeling of gender. There's a lot of variations, and you don't have to know all of them, but you should respect them.

He wasn't asking about her masculine/feminine expression or for a detailed explanation of Alex's personality. He was literally enquiring as to the biological sex of the human. Perhaps the question should be "Will I be more likely to have to wash blood or semen from the bed sheets in the morning?". Behaviour and identity are very separate from biology. One can inform the other but biological males can't give birth to human children. The old labels are still relevant when discussing biology, even if biology doesn't impact behavioural expression as much as once believed. The old man's question is valid.
