My P38 suddenly lost power and was sounding like a bag of spanners. I Managed to nurse it back home and the following day decided to try and diagnose the problem.
I plugged it into the diagnostics to see if any codes would show up, there was a few showing “misfire” on a number of cylinders. It didn’t appear to be sensor or coil pack related.
There was an obvious metallic sort of noise coming from the left rocker cover.
To get the rocker cover off I had to remove the plenum chamber and a number of other parts to get access.
Once I got the rocker cover off it was obvious that a rocker shaft had snapped. I looked into getting a new set of rockers for the car but I needed to get the car running for the next day. I managed to get a set of used ones locally and for free.
I only videoed the removal of the parts and fitting of the replacement rockers. As good old Haynes would say, “refitting is the reversal of removal”.
After firing the car up it sounded fine and on a test drive it drove as it should.
Sorry for the camera angles, lack of zoom and me getting in the way of the camera.
Thanks for watching.
Matey.

Did you ever find out the cause of the snap in the shaft?

I’m not sure what caused it. The bolts could have been incorrectly torqued at some point or it was a weak spot. There’s not much metal around that part of the rocker where the bolt goes through.

@@grindstone007 There are online versions of Rave manuals available. That’s not so good! Hopefully it’s just a matter of the head gaskets needing replaced. There is also a group on Facebook called “Rover V8 Engine Appreciation” where you can find lots of good advice on engine work. Hope you get it sorted. Thanks.

@@menditmatey3368 I shouldn't have to pull the timing chain eh? Imma pull the cover to clean it but I'm thinking this engine only has one camshaft below the heads?

@@grindstone007 you don’t need to remove the timing casing or chain, it can be left in situ when removing the cylinder heads. There a some decent videos on KZbin that show you how to do it step by step. Cheers 👌
