It does amaze me that we got this theft issue sorted in the late 90's / early 2000's with keys that have a chip embedded. And then for very little extra convenience we regressed straight back to the 1980's when a kid with a teaspoon could steal your car in 45 seconds.

Its a simple thing, pressing a button to unlock your car. Also - l494 that I have put 54k miles on over 3yrs.now at 95k. In that time I have had one issue car went into limp home mode due to a turbo sensor £10 fix. Lots of people buy these cars and skimp on servicing / maintenance. I change oil earlier than JLR say. I have changed gearbox oil 2x. Prevention servicing through a good independent.

Thank you Peds for another first class video. I own a 2023 Range Rover Sport d350, Insurance for me is at an acceptable level. When you buy new you have a free Tracker for 12 months, however at the time of building you can opt for a 3 year upgrade. I can't recall the cost but it was cheap enough and represented a huge saving over annual upgrades. My point is: 1. Your insurance quote will be considerably cheaper with tracker. 2. If buying second hand try and find one with remainder of the 3 year tracker package.

I had a vouge SE 4.6 did 9 mpg. Yes it was the best car I have owned 5:21 and made me feel like king of the road, but I got to know every RAC recovery bloke. I couldn’t use it for long trips , due to its unreliability, I was putting my family at risk. In the end it was a money pit - no matter how much I spent there was always something that needed more money. In the end I felt like the thing had taken me hostage- no amount of silky smooth and effortless waffling could disguise it’s unreliable to the point of being dangerous if you have a young family.

Don’t forget that JLR’s atrocious supply chain management - and the resulting critical parts shortages - have significantly contributed to theft rates (spare parts are in huge demand) and thus insurance premiums. I think JLR have been lulled into a false sense of security over the past decade; their products are so desirable that buyers were willing to overlook iffy quality control and reliability so there was little incentive to tackle these problems….but customers being literally unable to insure their cars might make management wake up. Some people will jump ship to other brands and never come back

The issue is as soon as the thieves know which areas are hotspots (as in where these updates are being concentrated on) they will just move to the next area. Land Rover/RR are also refusing insurance to owners. The situation is serious and hope it gets on too of. The other issue is for the OCG is selling the cars on and the lack of police action. We all know how much the police forces have been cut. Also sentencing is so lenient that it makes it worth it for the thieves.

The RangeRover has always been the top of the tree when it comes to a luxury car that can do it all, whether arriving in style at the Ritz or driving across your country estate, if you can afford one there’s nothing better to drive in consummate luxury and style and, although I haven’t owned one for some years now, I still have fond memories of the pleasure of driving it. However,…. if JLR can’t sort out the insurance/theft issue then they will be losing customers in massive numbers. If you’re about to purchase or order one and then hear of owners being either refused cover or being quoted ridiculously high premiums, you are going to start looking elsewhere. Reliability is another matter but, in fairness any large complex car by any manufacturer is going to be expensive to run and have potential for issues. What is important is to provide excellent customer service if that happens and prompt rectification of any faults. Unfortunately the general opinion seems to be that currently JLR are failing in this as well which is surely a failure of senior management?

Was doing too many miles, and the monthly fuel bill had reached 400+ euros (live in the Netherlands). And then my wife tore the roof open in an underground carpark. Broke my heart, it did. Had replaced the air suspension with +5 cm progressive coils and De Carbon Adelphi shocks. Fitted +5cm track wideners on each corner, too. Handled like a dream and looked amazing on its BF Goodrich All-Terrains. Epic vehicle in every way. Would I buy a new one? Absolutely, no hesitation!

On the subject of large wheels, my older (l405) car has twenty-inch wheels. I recently swapped the space-saver spare for a full sized wheel after a puncture a long way from home. I turned seventy last year, and am average size and still reasonably healthy, but hoicking the spare out of the boot well is absolutely at my limit of lifting, especially considering that you have to do the lift at arm's length across the lower tailgate. I doubt I could manage a bigger wheel now, never mind in five years' time.

I did have Poly bushes on mine so could throw it around a bit. It was actually the longest I'd owned a car but broke me. I had a problem with the cam followers on mine but fixed it. The fuel consumption was 12MPG round town or 26MPG on a long run but I could get better fuel consumption when off-roading because mostly it was jus idling and did not need a lot of revs. Bonus was it was the carb 3.5 V8 version and could mend it with a set of spanners and screwdrivers, no computers 🙂

Hey Ped! Greetings from Vancouver Island, BC Canada…. As you state all OEMs of luxury vehicles suffer from theft from organized crime gangs. I work for a General Motors retailer have done for nearly 20 years now. When GM issued the new C8 Corvette they changed the fob to a “sleeping Fob” so if the fob is in your pocket/bag and not being used the fob shuts down and stops transmissions of the data needed to clone it. When you press the button the fob stays active for up to 30 seconds, then shuts down again…. Downside, well there is a delay from pressing the button to the command happening, but that’s a small price to pay if it means your pride and joy is still in your garage! These fobs are now being rolled out to other GM product.

Hi Ped Fair and balanced overview. Range Rover should be a Top Brand. The product in so many ways is excellent, and world class, But let down by reliability and quality issues that should have been sorted years ago. Also management should have seen the insurance issue which has been creeping up on the brand for a considerable time, and whilst major sums have now been spent, the financial hit to their reputation and sales I bet has been even greater. Also greater attention to the dealer network would be a worthwhile move.

An anecdote worth quoting concerns a Land Rover Defender. Said vehicle was bought secondhand as an accident repair. However, the new owner had difficulty in determining which corner of the vehicle had been damaged, largely due to the extremely poor original build quality. Because some of the parts used were non-standard it was finally realised that the vehicle had been stolen and partly stripped before it was recovered. Then due to a dearth of original parts available, it was rebuilt with whatever was available, including a third row of seats.

I was in a market for one as my wife and myself too like them. Had a hire car a few times. But I just had no trust and maybe no courage to buy one. As you admit it at the end of the video that the reliability is a real issue and topping all the unreliability car surveys. Also had close friends and even my direct manager having multiple issues and problems with it. But they are like biased towards the Range Rover like many British people are, and they don't want to admit or even realise that they car is more at the dealer then at home. I needed a car for a long journeys and do a lot of cross Europe trips so I needed a reliable car. And I had no other car (or two in a garage) which I would be able to use while my Range Rover is (again) at the dealers for (trying to fix a leaking panoramic sunroof, central locking not working etc.) So I decided to go with a safer option and bought a German SUV and done 40k in the UK and In Europe without any issues for the 3 years I had it. This is what Land Rover needs to achieve, being reliable at least in the first few years of the cars lifetime, but they still failing with that unfortunately. And I was very relived that I didn't go with a Range Rover when the theft scandal came out as my insurance would have sky rocketed and also would be in such a negative equity on the PCP that my outstanding balance would be triple what the cars market value would be.

Great balanced report. I have a 2023 HSE of these, I’ve owned RR’s for over 20 years and 5 new purchases. This latest RR is head and shoulders above all past models, fantastic driving, completely luxurious, and not too flashy. My insurance on my 2018 autobiography was £800 , this latest RR was difficult to find insurance in March 2023 and painful at £2400, I’m dreading my renewal. Will I have to sell this beautiful car? I tried JLR insurance in November and they refused to quote. In my opinion JLR should guarantee everyone if they believe in their security. I’ve turned off the keyless function, I use a steering wheel lock, I rarely park it anywhere I don’t know and use the security app . Come on insurance companies, very few of the latest models are getting stolen, look again at normalising the premiums.

We took an original (modified) 2 door through the back of inland Queensland at the end of 1970 or 1971. It went everywhere. Up and down sand dunes, through flooded land (3 kilometres wide). The mods were larger fuel tank and suspension mods. Oh and a winch front and rear. No problems. My friends tried the same thing in 2015. It cost $6000 to get a flat bed out to pick it up. Gearbox failure. Now, the reliability can be lived with if when you claim for justified repairs, the Land Rover people will fight you every item on the list. They didn't have to go to court to get their money back as in the same year another person had taken them to court and they lost the case. It cost them about $750,000. The friends got a Landcruiser V8 and completed the research project they were doing. Peter they were good. But the support is terrible. They are not now built for Australian conditions. Want to drive to the centre of Australia? Get a Land Rover. Want to drive back? Get a Toyota. Sure they break too, but support is not a death fight. You and Matt from High Peak must be great friends.

Each to their own I guess. So many well documented and confirmed issues with JLR products, it’s amazing that they have the loyal customers that they do. Depreciation is nothing new on them, I had a neighbour 19+ years ago that took a massive hit on his Freelander, which is all the more painful as it is a cheaper product in the first place. Clearly JLR can’t be held responsible for organised criminal gangs, but they can be held responsible for their very lacklustre reaction to the issue, and as a consequence, are also responsible for the hike in insurance costs. There’s no denying the Range Rover is an imposing vehicle, and are extremely plush (powered parcel shelf - really 🙄). As you said at the end, JLR have a lot to do to correct the issues they have mainly brought on themselves.

Understand that JLR warranty claims have dropped by a large amount since 2020, when the last of the legacy engines such as the V6 Ford/PSA diesel disappeared and widespread adoption of the PiviPro infotainment was established. There was also a major effort to reduce variations across the data and electrical systems. Standard warranty now is three years unlimited miles, extendable up to 10 years, 100.000 miles which seems competitive to me. KZbin is full of vids along the lines of 'I bought a fifteen year old range rover for £500 and it has cost me a fortune....' There is a reason expensive vehicles depreciate more than others. If you can't do the work yourself, or haven't the money to spend on service and repairs, better to stay away.

I have had 6 various Land Rovers (including 2 Range Rovers) and found the vehicles are really great but they are let down on their reliability but the dealerships and their indifferent attitude to the customer is really where they score low. I had a recall on my RR for potential brake hose failure issues. 4 different dealerships and up to 3 months wait to get it booked in is not an acceptable service. Ask yourself why there are so many independent Land Rover specialists around?

I don't know why manufacturers don't put a simple switch on the key. switch it on when you're about to go out and switch it off for the night. the RF pouch and faraday cages are overkill. it'll save battery on the keys too

Lots of love for LR & RR in the comments. Personally, I'd never have one. Hi, as already mentioned earlier put an on/off switch on the remote or get the car makers to stop putting keyless entry on cars It's not exactly hard to press the unlock/lock buttons. On my previous 2016Jaguar XFS there was a combination of fob presses to turn off the keyless entry which I did I wonder if other Jag/Landrover cars are the same. Check with your dealer or the forums.

My friend’s dad bought one home the weekend before they were released. I didn’t at the time realise the significance of it, I just remember it was so different and so imposing from anything else. His father was a senior shop steward and as such had considerable power over the management, this being several years before Red Robbo did his best to destroy the business, and before Michael Edward’s eventually won back control/sold it all off!
