I wish we had a hunting club that had property to hunt like y'all do. We don't have that up here and it sucks that we don't. I have to drive over an hour 1 way to go hunting on state ground. Thats a lot of money just in gas alone.

It’s amazing how people believe a shotgun shoots tighter with a longer barrel. The only thing different from a short barrel to a longer barrel is the muzzle velocity that’s lost with a shorter barrel. If you want a gun to shoot tight then use a tighter choke. It’s as simple as that folks.

Factually, inertia matters. Short barrels can shoot tight, but 2 perfectly identical barrels with perfectly identical chokes, one 18" and the other 28", the 28" will tend to group tighter for a given load, because of the "extra inertia" from the "extra velocity". The more inertia a pellet has, the more it wants to "keep doing what it's doing". In this example, heading straight for the target without veering off course. Is it enough difference to make a difference? Maybe, maybe not. We can also see inertia at work in pellet size. Larger pellets tend to group tighter than smaller ones because of mass. Think of a bird shot pattern Vs a buckshot pattern of the same payload weight. The buckshot tends to be tighter. Like all things, there are exceptions and limitations to these tendencies, but according to physics, this is what will usually happen.

@@joearledge great insight but I’ve done the tests myself. I am a waterfowl guide with over 20yrs experience and everyone would say I tend to geek out on shotgun patterns. Two 870 12 gauge guns. One with a 24” and one with a 28” barrel with the exact same kicks full choke. Both patterned nearly the same. Shells were the same as well. Lost a little FPS, but I can’t remember how much exactly. I’ve did tests on benelli m2’s, super black eagles 1,2,&3, Winchester sx3’s, sx4’s and beretta a400’s in both in both 12 and 20 gauge. Using the same choke neither made hardly any difference in pattern due to barrel length. They only lost FPS on the shells being shot. Take it for what you will, but I’ve spent a ton of money testing all this stuff. And another thing… I’ve tested patterns with two of the same guns and same choke/shell combinations and they pretty much patterned the same, so when they say two guns won’t pattern alike, I disagree with that because I’ve proven that wrong also. If anyone wants to dispute that any further then I suggest you do the tests yourself. You’ll be surprised with the results. Best of luck and happy shooting/hunting.

I have a 11-87 super mag, Remington, shoots them 3&1/2" monsters has the extended mag tube and 30" barrel has a kicks full choke in it,It's been for sale in our store for 2 years now $250 Nobody wants it, when I bought it I thought because it was semi auto I could shoot those big 3&1/2"'s I was wrong as a I turn on the interstate 🤣
