Rangers Gone Wild - Mighty Morphin Zyurangers (Episode 14)

It doesn't get any weirder than this. Zyuranger tells one story where balls make people fall in love and another where the female leads play weaponized dress-up. What's even weirder is Power Rangers thinking it can use footage from both of those episodes and include absolutely none of those things! It's somehow just as dirty, though.

I found it pretty great when Big One did it (even if that episode happened while the show was falling to pieces around him), but MegaPink doing it in the Gaoranger anniversary movie was...weird, since that had never been a thing for her, and she had a more clumsy/scatterbrained character.

Man, just unto itself, this is maybe one of the funniest episodes of MMZR yet; "these shows need Jesus", the Goofus and Gallant stuff, the "remix" of the Bulk-kakke...this one had me laughing all the way through. As to the actual substance of the episodes themselves... * Kudos on giving Paul Schrier a specific shout-out; I've always felt he was genuinely one of the show's better actors, which I realize is maybe a bit silly to say given his chief role is to be The Most Odious Sort Of Comic Relief...but, like, he DOES The Most Odious Sort Of Comic Relief really *WELL*, and that's actually not as easy a thing to do successfully as you might think. Moreover, as time goes on, he'll be able to imbue Bulk with a bit more (and I do want to emphasize a BIT more) genuine pathos...and he not only makes THAT work too, he makes it work specifically WITHIN the context of the character otherwise being a total clown. * Likewise, I'm glad we're in agreement "Babe Ruthless" is one of the best Monster Names the show has ever come up with. It's a genuine shame the actual character borderline doesn't exist, especially because, while I realize "Power Rangers" wasn't going to be able to use a lot of FOOTAGE from the "The Knuckleball of Infatuation", it DOES feel like the Love Spell thing ought to have been easy enough to adapt; pad that out with some filler Putty Fights (and maybe keep the audition sub-plot by connecting it to the love spell idea somehow?) and I think you'd have something at least FUNCTIONAL. * "Princess Mei's Seven Metamorphoses" is legitimately one of my favorite "ZyuRanger" episodes; as you yourself have observed, Mei isn't the most tightly-defined of "ZyuRanger"'s characters, and to the extent that she is, it's in fairly generic terms. So "Seven Metamorphoses" giving her a focus episode wherein she gets to be clever, independent, and FUN is a genuine treat, and speaks to the ways in which "ZyuRanger" could and should have been utilizing her character all along. I honestly wish the costume conceit had stuck around for more stories after this, imagine how much fun it would be as a recurring element of Mei's character!

This episode could've been pretty fun if they went all in on the "Goldar being in charge" idea by making him the worse leader ever, like have him send puddies to stupid places to do stupid things! Have him send them to attack the rangers at the juice bar or during school only for that plan to backfire! Maybe you could just have him make like seven different monsters, with only two of them being good enough to last to the giant phase of the battle! Edit in those Puddy waiters that they cut around from before so that it looks like he's throwing himself a victory party before his plans even start! They had the suit, they could've had him go down there and tie someone to train tracks only for it to turn out that he tied them to an abandoned railway. I'm just so transfixed by the idea of the main villain puting the henchman in charge for a single episode, and them doing a horrible job being evil!

Now that you mention it, there actually was an episode from 1990's Chikyu Sentai Fiveman with literally that very premise. Putting the foot soldiers in charge for a change. Episode 26 to be exact. So, yeah, it's not like this idea couldn't have worked.

I laughed a lot at your impression on Burai leaving the timeless room for a short moment during the Princess Mei episode as well as the fact the rangers leave their zords in between battles. I do agree it would make better sense for them to just have them switch modes between monster fights. I think it also would have worked better if they just filmed new footage of the monsters. That is if they even have the costumes for them.

7:18 - I think Des Shinta talked a little bit about this back in his extensive review of "Zyuranger", and I certainly agree with his assessment on this matter. I do get why they handled Burai the way they did from a marketing perspective, but in terms of story, it may have been a short-sighted mistake. Perhaps instead of the whole Timeless Room subplot, Clotho could've just simply given him the Zyusoken and told him, "His time on this world was short, so make the most of it!" That statement doesn't necessarily mean that he'll die, at least from his and the audience's point of view. Once Burai officially stops being evil, the others would invite him to join the team, but he politely declines. While he's willing to come and help out as needed, he still did some terrible things and needs some time to atone for them. Where would he be spending his time, with Gnome and Ryota in their fairy woods. During this time, he'd work with Gnome like he used to and work on earning Ryota's trust and friendship back as his actions have caused the young fairy's faith in him to be shattered. This way, the show could still do everything the other episodes do in terms of keeping him absent from the plot and showing up to save the day at the last minute. Then when we eventually get to Bandora summoning Dai Satan and the Zyurangers forming Ultimate Daizyuzin for the first time to drive him back, that would be when he'd finally join the team proper and begin interacting with them and world at large more and more. While Clotho would tell them about needing to find the power to form Ultimate Daizyuzin, he'd still hold off on mentioning Burai's shortened lifespan. Then when the time comes to finally kill him in that three-episode story arch, the reveal about his faulty resurrection would finally come to fruition. This would make the Zyurangers attempt and ultimate failure to prevent it all the more tragic and sad, both for them and the audience. The way the show does it, in my opinion, doesn't leave nearly as much of an impact as it could've since Burai wasn't able to form more than the most superficial of emotional connections to them. Getting to know him and then coming to love him would make his ultimately sacrifice and death all the more devastating. Maybe I'm getting too ahead of myself here, but that certainly would've made things a lot less awkward for the writers of "Power Rangers" in terms of being able to include Tommy in the plots without ALWAYS having to come up with some lame excuse to sideline him. Thankfully, this problem was "mostly" fixed thanks to the commissioned Zyu2 footage when the show got extended.

Well you have to remember that this was sentai’s first time having a 6th ranger and they didn’t expect Burai to be as popular as he was. The 6th ranger was not meant to be just another member of the team but rather a ranger that would help out the team in dire situations. The 6th ranger’s presence is meant to be special so I feel Burai’s whole candle plot was really well done as it gives him enough time to help the rangers until he dies but he has to make a most of it. Your idea is really good just doesn’t work for the idea of this being the first 6th to join the team in the franchise

As for why Burai is usually shoved to the side and doesn't contribute to the plot whatsoever, it's because early on sixth rangers were just glorified extras rather than main characters. It wasn't until Gaoranger (Wild Force) that the sixth ranger even gets credited in the openings.

And that’s only after the title of Sixth Ranger was made into a recurring character at all, with the closest ones beforehand being one-off characters in Choudenshi Bioman (Magne Warrior) and Hikari Sentai Maskman (X1 Mask). The ironic thing is, I’ve noticed recently that Tommy has much more in common with Magne Warrior than with Burai: Being a new guy in town who easily proves himself capable of handling the series mooks w/o any assistance or powers, initially gets overlooked by the Rangers as a new recruit, develops a romantic interest in one of the female Rangers (Magne Warrior falls for Yellow, Tommy goes for Pink), is given Ranger-like powers by the Evil Forces of the series then subsequently mind-controlled to do their bidding, and is ultimately saved by the Rangers at the end of their introductory stories. I’m starting to think that MMPR season 1 is just Saban remaking Bioman with American actors and Zyuranger fight footage.

I remember being so confused by this episode as a kid lol the silkworm plot seemed so strange when they threw in the random Babe Ruthless fight. And that sequence "bridging the gap" between the two zord fights was obvious padding, even to eight-year-old me. The two respective Zyuranger episodes are certainly among my favorites of the series, though. I wish they could've found a way to adapt their respective plots for PR. Imagine Billy and Trini becoming obsessed with Kimberly, wearing pink and adopting her mannerisms? Or having Amy Jo Johnson adopt her own disguises to match the footage of Lamie in disguise. Yeah, I know both would've been complete tonal shifts for what PR had been doing at that point, but it would've been entertaining, at the very least.

Fun fact in Disney’s last year of ownship of Power Rangers they resided the first Season of Mighty Morphin with new graphical distract- I mean enhancements. However because sports games constantly effected ABC’s schedule and Saban eventually bought the franchise back only 32 episodes of the 60 episode season got the Re-vision treatment. I bring this up because for any kids who happened to watch this show the first time via the “Revision” this would be the finale of Mighty Morphin. Yup not a final battle with Rita or even Zack winning over Angela… it ends with Tommy filming a commercial

PS: Like the Power Rangers second season episode *Two for One* , they should have had an episode where Kim and Tommy was goes on a date. 1. They both get captured, 2. Then, the other rangers came to rescue them, 3. But Scorpina comes along and traps them in the cocoon. 4. They break out and Babe Ruthless is released and grows. 5. The rangers get the zords. 6. Goldar and Scorpina join the battle. 7. Tommy manages to escape, with Kim (but she ends up unconscious) 8. Morphines, get his zords and join the battle to form Dragonzord in Battle Mode. 9. They defeat the monster as Kim regain conscious. 10. Scorpina shrinks and release the Silkworm and made it grow as Kim morphines into action and gets her zord, to form the Megazord. 11. Bob your uncle.

Power Rangers could have had a Baseball episode, with Rita Repulsa making a love potion so any pitcher that throw the ball and if it strikes the Batter's body, the Batter would fall in love with the Pitcher. Or fall in love with whatever they see first, thus would have the scene of Zack the Black Ranger falling in love with his new Motor Bike he would have in this episode.

If Zyuranger was a later season that got adapted, PR would either skip those two episodes or adapt them each with original footage. I always liked in most power ranger series how new rangers were treated like they had been there from the start they rarely felt like they had to prove themselves or out of place and the rangers tend to be like hey your one of us a ranger why not join us we need all the help we can get and don't worry we will treat you like the rest.

You know I could've reworked, the scorpion episode: plot synapses: Tommy and Kimberly go out on a date, while the others are currently at the beach. (We can keep the amazing scene of bulk and skull) scorpion this shows up and the Rangers split up, they get trapped. And Scorpio reveals that she can now use anyone who is trapped in her cocoon as a disguise. Turning into each one of the actors, and trying to capture Tommy and Kimberly during their date. Interwoven the footage, and if you really are strapped for cash and you don't have access to the costume(which might be possible are not sure on how much of the costume that they have access to?) You can work around it by revealing your own version of the cocoon monster before giving large. As for the star is born with the Babe Ruth monster, baseball tryouts. Maybe tip off that one the monsters is in human form. Both episodes are saved, and you have extra episode! Again writers don't want to do research to save money? When you could be saving more money when you do research?

I found a common excuse for sidelining Tommy is that they often have him off by himself training, and often forgets his communicator. I actually got the impression from this that he was quite forgetful and a bit of a loner. Granted he wasn't nearly as of a loner as Burai, as he did still hang out with the others sometimes, but with how many times he went off on his own to train, it gave me the impression that he wasn't fully acclimating to his new group of friends in these early episodes.

How Power Rangers could have limited Tommy's Sentai appearances properly: Instead of whining about her defeat when Tommy joins the group, Rita reveals that if the Green Ranger ever turned on her, she had the green candle that could steal back the powers from the user, and the candle would activate whenever the Green Ranger was morphed. She could then up her monster attacks, reasoning that she needed to keep forcing the Rangers to call on Tommy and burn through his powers.

As difficult as it possibly would've been, I honestly think these should've been adapted into two completely separate "Power Rangers" episodes. Here's how I think it could've been done. 4:25 - "The Knuckleball of Infatuation", could be a joint Tommy/Kimberly focused episode entitled "Take Me Out to the Ball Game". Kimberly has two tickets to see an upcoming baseball game but is bummed about it instead of excited. Nobody knows why except Trini, so she urges Tommy to offer to take her. He does so, and Kimberly nervously excepts. We all at this stage, she has a thing of Tommy but they aren't officially a couple yet. Rita figuring out the fact that they have some awkward romantic tension between them uses this as inspiration for the "Babe Ruthless" monster. Considering the fact that you thought they could've easily gotten an American actor to dress up as the "King Sphinx" monster, I'm sure they could've easily done the same here. While at the game, Kimberly's starting to get back to her bubbly self and starts having a good time, and Tommy even manages to catch a fly ball for her. But when he hands it to her, she starts getting sad again. Tommy finally flat out asks her why she's been so bummed lately and she ultimately confides in him that when she was little her Dad used to take her to ball games all the time. But since her parents are now divorced, she doesn't see him nearly as often as she'd like to leading to Tommy to attempt to comfort her. As for how the kid "Babe Ruthless" enters the story, Angel Grove Stadium is holding a contest allowing a specially selected kid to throw the starting pitch off the mound. Since "Babe Ruthless" looks like a kid, this is where the insane love ball plot of the Zyuranger episode takes over. Since the "Power Rangers" don't have motorcycles, perhaps Zack could instead fall in love with his boombox or something. The FOX censors probably wouldn't be too thrilled about showing him being all creepy gooey-eyed around Angela. Then after everything is said and done, Kimberly gets a surprise when her father finally arrives in town. They may not be able to go to the ball game like they had planned, but they can still spend some father daughter time together providing a heartwarming ending. I don't know, I think it could've worked. What do you guys think?

@@bigred8432 The same thing happened to the original costumes used for the heroes of "VR Troopers", so Saban had to resort to making recreations of them. They clearly didn't exactly match the original versions (not nearly as well as the Power Rangers did) but they looked just similar enough that kids mostly still bought it. Heck, since they'd likely have to refilm the Babe Ruthless ground footage anyway, it likely wouldn't of made a difference since most kids genuinely didn't know "Power Rangers" came from a Japanese show at the time. It's like what MistareFusion said about the Green Ranger's crappy cloth gold shield during his recent look at the Green Ranger Saga. "Can't be disappointed by it if you haven't seen anything better!"

@@landonsantini365 The big issue with VR Troupers was that the Japanese show was from decades earlier, I think I'm right in saying they literally had nothing in storage to send to Saban. They could'nt re-film any ground footage without a costume for Babe Ruthless though and at that point Saban were not shelling out for american made monsters.

Power Rangers could have had an All Girl episode, where Kimberley and Trini would be out shopping one day while the Boys Jason, Tommy, Zack and Billy were having a Day Trip to the City to watch a NFL Football Match. During the Girl's shopping trip, Kimberly and Trini find that Scorpina has been sent by Rita to capture Humans inside cocoons using her Caterpillar Monster. Trini and Kimberly fight against the Caterpillar Monster only to be caught in a cocoon that the monster spins around them. Both girls find a way to break out of it, ask Zordon for help to get the Zords to come together and they end up defeating Scorpina's Monster Caterpillar and saving the day while the boys are at the NFL Football match. Also the MMPR team have a Asian Actress to do their own Scorpina's Footage and therefore make their own fight footage using the Yellow and Pink Rangers fight the Monster Caterpillar.

Here's how I think it could've been done. 11:24 - "Princess Mei's Seven Metamorphoses!!!" could also be another Kimberly focused episode. I'd still call it "A Star is Born" and would occur directly after the "Babe Ruthless" episode. The Tommy Karate Audition C-Plot and the Rangers Day at the Beach B-Plot would remain the same, with the exception of Kimberly also being at the beach. The rest of the air time would be fulfilled by Kimberly's A-Plot. Her spending the weekend with her father eventually leading to them talking about how hard her folks divorce can be sometimes for the both of them. Their scenes could likely be filmed in an actual mall or something like that. I'm sure they have plenty of those in Hollywood. Since they can't use Scorpina as she's a Japanese-faced character, obviously they'd have to send Goldar in the equivalent reshot footage. Basically, while Tommy's busy with the commercial, and the other four rangers are trapped in the cocoon, Goldar and an army of putties try to take over the mall with the random costume-changes of the "Zyuranger" episode being replaced by silly cartoon gags about putties going through the mall's various stores. The primary conflict here would be Kimberly struggling between her conflicted duties of protecting both her father and the mall's patrons and ultimately having to morph to end this invasion but being hesitant to do so as there's no way she can realistically do it without revealing her identity to her father. I admit, I'm a bit stuck on how to end this one after the Zord battle. How do you guys think the story should end?

Wait until you see a turtle with a traffic light up its ass who uses it to either make people freeze in place, make them go in slow motion, or make them go so fast they can't stop. And also he uses a baseball bat to fight his enemies. This is very ridiculous for both the Sentai and Power Rangers versions.

Oh, I forgot to say! If you're worried about future seasons having plots that are so far apart from each other you can't really compare them, you could try checking out the very interesting process they used while adapting Denji Sentai Megaranger into Power Rangers In Space. The overarching plots and setups couldn't be more different, but individual episode plots are in a lot of cases translated almost one-for-one, quite an interesting effect with the different contexts--and they take care to make slight alterations to fit the different characters. (For instance, there's an episode where the team mistakenly thinks the silver ranger is severely ill, maybe even dying, and act over-the-top nice to him and try and stop him fighting. In Megaranger, he's a nice goofball so the conceit is he doesn't know until the end and the reveal embarrasses everyone, but in Power Rangers their silver is an arrogant jerk, so they change it so that he does know and is deliberately playing them, eventually getting his comeuppance when they find out)

Fusion, I have to ask: What exactly are your thoughts on the whole "Tommy has to be written out every episode" formula as a whole? Obviously, the excuses can sometimes get contrived, but do you believe that Power Rangers was genuinely doing the best they could under the circumstances? Or do you believe they should have rightfully just written Tommy to be trapped in a pocket dimension like Burai? I mean, you tend to criticize Power Rangers for not following Zyuranger more closely in most other areas.

It looks decent to me, but maybe I'm just used to it. The PR footage in general is just a badly-interlaced videotape transfer to begin with. It could be a result of the de-interlacing I'm doing on it combined with the fact that my video is set to the Zyuranger frame rate instead of the MMPR one. Since the PR stuff is going to look pretty bleh no matter what, I decided to prioritize the Zyuranger footage. That said, if you have any recommendations for how to better present it, I'm happy to hear it.

I really like your humour, but I don't like that you insinuate that every story needs conflict. What about slice of life series? I don't believe every story needs conflict, and I personally like it when their normal lives and their rangers duty don't have anything to do with each other, makes it more relatable to me, as my school life and my home life didn't have anything related either, the price of having no friends for seven of the eleven years of school. Anyway, I liked this episode of Power Rangers is what I'm trying to say. Having two unrelated monsters is cool and I wish later season still did that.

The thing is it’s hard to make a slice of life show with tokusatsu when every episode needs to have a villain plot and a ranger story that conflicts with villain plot. The issue with the episode isn’t that it’s just silly fun but rather that it’s nothing more than just silly fun. This is pretty much just a filler episode that you can easily just skip as it is just rangers go to the beach, Tommy goes to an audition, both interrupted by monster attacks. Goldar literally had no reason to send out 2 monsters and Scorpina other than he was bored and Rita was out at the moment. The Zyuranger episodes were filler but the villains had a plan when sending out the monster of the week. MMPR S1 was still the first so they get a pass as the writers are new to writing toku so them messing up episodes is alright at the time

I appreciate you sharing your perspective with me! However, I very much stand by the idea that all stories need conflict. Yes, even a so-called "slice-of-life" needs to have conflict. Even if the plot is "who wins the baseball game" or "I'm finally going to succeed in baking a souffle," those are both conflicts. Fiction is said to be real life with all the boring parts cut out. When you cut out the boring parts, you're left with conflict. Tommy auditioning for a commercial is great, but there desperately needed to be some obstacle for him, ANY kind of obstacle.
