The last remnants of Zyuranger are wiped out, but three more seasons of direct continuity remain. A machine empire, a familiar face, a pre-pubescent ranger, cars, and SPAAAAACE confront our heroes... and then the producers decide to just drop them all completely! (UPDATE: Yes, I know about the recent David Yost interview on nopinkspandex explaining the controversy that caused him to leave the series. It was released just days after I posted this video, so, unfortunately, I didn't have the facts to go on at the time.)

Since the old annotations are gone, and you have to open the description all the way to see it otherwise, let me just pin this: Yes. I know what happened to David Yost. I have known for quite a long time. This video is ten years old, and the interview where he first talked about that came out several days after I released it.

Yeah. It's sad that it happened like that. He deserved much better treatment than that. Billy was my favorite character and I was sad to see him leave. But I fully understand why David Yost left. Nobody should be harrassed daily at work for their sexuality. This day and age that bullshit wouldn't fly.

I always loved how the three Mighty Morphin seasons, Zeo, Turbo and In Space all connected together to create a full, six-year, 293-episode sci-fi epic spanning a multitude of characters and storylines. It was my first exposure as a child to a series that had lasting consequences and overarching themes. Even now, I look at it as the epitome of live-action children's programming of the 1990s, because there was such a passion in the show to create something that was entertaining and awesome, and eventually something that would keep viewers coming back not only every week, but season after season. While Power Rangers still has a number of great seasons under its belt from afterwards (Lost Galaxy, Time Force, DinoThunder, SPD, RPM and currently Megaforce), I don't think that Saban or any other company that helms the show from here on in will ever be able to rekindle the amount of world-and-galaxy-spanning epicness that the first six seasons produced. It has its flaws, and I think it always will. But for something that began as a way to sell toys and make explosions, it became something that was more than the sum of its parts.

Though Dino Charge is being seen as an improvement than its predecessors, I have to say, due to Nickelodeon's 2 season split restrictions and now the fact Power Rangers has fallen behind adapting Super Sentai, I feel Nickelodeon has treated Power Rangers much worse than Disney could ever had

ShootStyleZombie Y'know what I wish we could do? Create a season of Power Rangers that could beat Japan to the punch. I mean, that's the kind of storyline in mind when I'm writing my fanfic. Problem is, that one's a crossover that would require Sega, Nintendo, Saban, Aniplex and Activision to all hold hands. And whoever owns certain other franchises.

Most of what I know beyond that is thanks to Linkara's HOPR series. This was really just my way of paying homage to/cracking the secrets of one of my beloved childhood pastimes. I had a ball making these, so I'm glad other people have enjoyed them too.

I found it surprising to learn about some of the show's bad production history. The actors and crew were made to work full time for low pay, they sometimes were put in physically dangerous situations, and one of those actors was regularly harassed for personal reasons. I assume that if a show's production today had that sort of behavior, the cast and crew could easily create a complaint on the internet, gain public support and pressure the producers into making a better working environment.

Here's an updated summary of each Neo-Saban season, and the production behind them, and how what happened behind the scenes led to most of the seasons in that era being mediocre at best, and unwatchable at worst. *Samurai:* The show went into production IMMEDIATELY after Saban bought back the franchise. Its Japanese Counterpart, Shinkenger, was heavily Japanese based, which was likely done due to PR's initial cancellation after RPM, because of how little Disney cared about the franchise. So fans were understandably shocked that they would adapt it. And what they got was just a badly translated version of the Sentai. Not many changes, except for ones that ruined the story, such as Antonio, the gold ranger. It did improve in the second half, known as "Super Samurai" because Nickelodeon has certain rules about shows that air on their channel. As it didn't pull any punches by the finale, actually showing a human character dying (Played by Rick Medina from Wild Force, who would later get arrested for murdering someone.), and had the rangers sacrificing their own Zords to defeat Master Xandred. But, it was still rushed, because of the timing, and Jonathan Tzachor's involvement. *Megaforce:* Saban had an opportunity to improve, now that they had time to do actual production work on the show, but it ended up being worse than Samurai, and some even debate whether it is worse than Operation Overdrive or not. A lot of this could be blamed on Tzachor, as he didn't have any idea what he was doing, and shot down actually decent advice, such as giving Troy a proper backstory, connecting in the Morphing Grid, and many other things. And the fact that they had to adapt two seasons (Goseiger and Gokaiger), with characters that were different from each other, leading to inconsitent characters, Jake and Noah being most affected. This begs the question, why didn't they switch the boys around? Why couldn't Troy become blue, Noah become green, and Orion be the new red ranger for Super Megaforce. And, come up with a good explanation for why Jake isn't there until he becomes the Silver Ranger. This show feels like a tragic tale of something that could've been good, but it ended up going wrong due to production troubles and studio interference. Thank god Tzachor was given the pink slip. *Dino Charge:* Because Tzachor screwed up twice in a row, he was replaced with Chip Lynn, who wrote Space, Lost Galaxy, Lightspeed, Time Force, and the second half of RPM. Seasons that were loved by fans. This show was a massive improvement on the acting front, and they used original villains for once, with Sledge leading them, who had nothing to do with Dinoc Charge's basis, Kyoryuger. All was good, until they ran out of ideas in the second half, and gave us the most confusing ending in Power Rangers history. I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it, but, it causes continuity problems in the PR universe, and, even if you take that out of account, it still doesn't work, because it screws with evolution as a whole. *Ninja Steel:* Because Saban wasn't okay with the show's abysmal ratings, due to Nickelodeon beign hyper focused on Spongebob and Loud House, he decided to step in, and make the show the way he wanted it to, or nothing at all. And he decided to take it in a more "light-hearted", and "comedic" direction. And what we got was a show that felt like a watered down, early MMPR inspired, and, even inspired by Breadwinners and Sanjay and Craig (Two shows meant to trigger mediocre clickbait animation reviewers with questionable politics.), kind of mess. Unlike Megaforce, which, had so many good ideas that weren't put to good use, this was a series of bad ideas, villains even kids couldn't take seriously, ninjas that didn't even act like ninjas, etc. This could be blamed by its Sentai Counterpart Ninninger having the same problems, but, as I said, Saban defintely contributed to a lot of things, including Victor and Monty, the worst attempts to bring back Bulk and Skull ever. The toys also were bad and sold awfully, which led to Saban Brands ending their contracting with Bandai, and giving the toy licence to Hasbro, who would proceed to buy the franchise from Saban, noticing how badly it was treated. Thus ending, the Neo-Saban Era. This era was Power Rangers acting like a whiny kid who refused to grow up, and would essentially become a manchild. Kind of like Chris-Chan, but, not as creepy. But, much like him, it would lead to the that manchild getting what he deserves, taken in where he won't cause any harm again, and given very drastic torture, like Alex from A Clockwork Orange, just to become a better and more mature person, and rehabilitated into society.

I believe that the show could have remained largely popular still throughout its second and third season if Saban had just agreed to make the show union and not had to fire Thuy, Walter and Austin. It would have kept that loyal fan base and their characters would have been in the first movie and probably would have done a little better in theaters.
@ドラゴンボール_おたく
@ドラゴンボール_おたく 10 жыл бұрын
I agree Saban is a cheapskate he fired three of the most popular characters in the show's history because he refused to pay them the money they deserved. their replacements Rocky and Aisha were the worst power rangers in Zordon's era. Adam was alright for Zeo and Turbo but during MMPR it took time to get used to him instead of Zack. But if the original cast stayed for all 3 seasons of MMPR do you think the remainder of Zordon's era would of had the same rangers?
@Seth_Hezekiah
@Seth_Hezekiah 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree. They have every right to negotiate their pay, and sometimes that means they don't agree on what that pay should be. It just means Saban didn't think they were worth what the actors thought they were worth, and that's how negotiation works.

I'm not fluent by any means. I took a semester in college, so I know the basics of speaking, reading, and writing. And I've been a huge fan of Dragon Ball for 14 years (and am working on a video review series of it right now), so learning a bit about the language has been a necessity. Last I checked, no official subtitles exist, and fansubs only got about halfway through the series. I had to watch the rest raw with episode summaries to help me through. Thankfully, it's not a very complex show.

V.R. Troopers is not a spin-off of Sentai, it is a seperate show that Saban created that used footage from another tokusatsu show made by Toei. The source material was from 3 different series of the now cancelled, Metal Heroes Series. The 3 series were more specifically "Superhuman Machine Metalder", "Dimensional Warrior Spielban" and "Space Sheriff Shaider". None of those series, or the rest of Metal Heroes for that matter, are Sentai. They are different shows and are more like distant cousins. Fun Fact #1: Even though Metal Heroes are not Sentai, they have been recently been appearing in Sentai episodes and crossover movies with them. Space Sherriff Gavan (from the first Metal Heroes series of the same name) starred in a crossover movie with 35th Sentai Gokaigers. The 3 new Space Sheriffs appeared in Super Hero Taisen Z which was crossover movie with Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, and Metal Heroes. In that same movie the Gokaigers transformed into multiple Metal Heroes from different series. And most recently "Metal Heroes" ninja, Jiraiya appeared in an episode of Ninninger. And the next Super Sentai series Kyuranger will be space themed and will most certainly have a Space Sheriff Gavan episode. Fun Fact #2: "Big Bad Beetleborgs" and it's sequel season "Beetleborgs Metallix" was another show that was produced by Saban and used Metal Heroes stock footage and costumes. The source material was from "Juukou B-Fighter" and it's sequel "B-Fighter Kabuto" for the 2 Bettleborg seasons respectively.

It depends. The Sentai do indeed team up, usually, if I recall correctly, in a one-off movie. The first Power Rangers team-up, Rangers of Two Worlds, with the Zeo Rangers and the Alien Rangers, was Sentai footage of the Ohrangers and Kakurangers, respectively. The yearly team-ups with the previous year's team is a Sentai tradition. Forever Red, Tommy fighting himself, etc., are Power Ranger exclusives and reflect that.

I loved this series of videos you made explaining the history of Power Rangers. I didn't know until a couple of years ago that Power Rangers actually came from Japan but I didn't know how much was changed.

Haha, no worries. It's just that I get that quite a bit. I actually address that in my commentary track for this video (although it's not nearly as often as I get the "David Yost quit because he was harassed for being gay," comment, despite the fact that that interview came out after I did these, and that I make note of it not only in a commentary track, and the video description, and annotations in the video itself... it never goes away! People never stop informing me of this! *sobs*)

@RedPolarBearRanger I know it wasn't the first Sentai team to do that, but Ohranger would have been the first Sentai series to go into production *after* the first season of MMPR and its runaway success, so that's why I postulated that MMPR might have been instrumental in bringing back the 2 female team at that particular time.

Actually, they weren't waiting at all. As I said, Ohranger was the very first series they could have possibly been able to take Power Rangers into account. And, yes, it did continue more frequently past Ohranger (not all the time, as Gingaman, for example, didn't).

@ForeverYellow1993 I never specifically said who owns what. But, yes, you're right. They did do Time Force. But, if Linkara's History of Power Rangers is to be believed, Disney took over during Wild Force, as evidenced by the difficulty in getting Forever Red off the ground.

I never said it was the first. Just said that it might have coerced Sentai to picking that back up on a more regular basis, in order for it to be more easily adapted.

@EHH246 The exact method seems to vary from season to season, but it's overall the same. Hell, season 1 of MMPR loosely used the original Zyuranger storyline as I showed in my second video in this series. However, the amount of stock footage used started greatly diminishing near the end of season 2. I believe I read an interview about Time Force where the producers said the Sentai footage amount had dropped from about 60% to about 10% by that point.

On a slightly unrelated note, the original Red Racer of Carranger (Turbo) is now the current voice of Ken Masters in Street Fighter, and Johnny Yong Bosch (Adam) is now the English voice of Yang in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition 2012

I'm afraid I don't know. The whole series has yet to be subtitled. Copyright has mostly banished it from KZbin. The series was released on DVD in Japan by Toei, but, obviously, you're not going to find any English subtitles on them.

It very well could be. I have no data to back up that opinion. But I say it could be because Ohranger was the first series to had the benefit of having been developed with the hindsight of Power Rangers's success. And realizing that it wasn't just a flash in the pan and that future Sentai series might be adapted that would want pink and yellow girls, I think it is possible. But then again, they were still holding onto Zyuranger costumes at the time, so maybe not. Who knows?

@KnightofDuroch Oh, I'm not saying that PR had the original idea, and I knew that previous Sentai team-ups had had them in the '80s. But if you consider the fact of how popular season 1 of MMPR was, and that Ohranger would have been the first Sentai series to start pre-production after that season finished, it seems possible to me that that inspired them to try that formula again for a little while.

i miss when it was on fox kids... when it went to abc family, jetix, disney, cbs, and nickelodeon it went downhill in show quality. i've still never watched really hardly any of rpm operation overdrive or jungle fury, i see them and they make me cringe and want to turn it off... i liked samurai... megaforce was good and could have been great with more time per episode and more storyline/plot dino charge was largely stupid and made no sense and jumped all over the place and felt like you got 3-5 minutes of show for a 30 minute time slot in terms of quality of the show and storyline and what was shown vs skipped over. dino charge having a purple ranger finally was amazing with kendall, but she never really had screen time so it didnt really matter karone should have been purple ranger during in space. in space was really the last season power rangers was great and popular.. ninja storm and dinothunder partly brought it back but then spd was only okay and then jungle fury and overdrive and rpm killed the series. as much as the usa has a love affair with cars... the campy car themed power rangers seasons do not do well.... turbo is widely denounced, lightspeed rescue was okay but not that popular or well liked, and rpm and overdrive should never have been made they were so bad. in general people liked bulk and skull but don't like the full on campy seasons, and don't like the super dark natured stuff either. and justin as power ranger was a bad idea, that character should have been left in the 1995 movie where he dreamed of being a ranger someday, he shouldnt have been brought into turbo 2 years later as an actual ranger. since rocky was hurt they should have bit the bullet and apologized for mistreating billy's actor and brought him back or brought back zack or jason or brought in someone new a little kid as a ranger just didnt work well or go over well with most of the audience.

"Ueda Yuuji Fan4 months ago At least Dino Charge and Super Dino Charge are better than Samurai and Megaforce." to me dino charge and super dino charge are both worse then samurai and megaforce by a really big amount. dino charge feels like its created by someone with add/adhd or something... there's no plot/story to it and each 30 minute show feels like it only has 2 minutes of substance/content/actual show in it with the rest commercials or filler. some people just like dinocharge better bc it has dinosaurs again like dino thunder and mmpr as far as i can tell. samurai tied back in to me with ninja storm and the older seasons and i really liked that season, and megaforce if they had done the story right reminded me of mmpr and seemed like they were re-telling the story for a new generation and the powers that season were amazing, especually the ultra mode, and i loved the angel theme.... the 2nd season of megaforce that had some stupid pirate theme sucked but i really liked the first season. the pirate themed 2nd season made the power rangers seem like villains from the older seasons all of a sudden and i didn't like it.

@@isabellaereshki Well look the Sentai Pirate Theme of Gokaiger was literally ignored by Power Rangers in General. It seemed lazy of Saban to literally do this, when he had put a lot of effort into previous seasons like Power Rangers in Space.

This entire documentary is brilliant. I watched the show from the age of 3, all the way up to time force at about 12/13 - you explain everything from both American and Japanese sides. It's also pretty funny too. In a way, it's sad to see childhood shows like this end, especially when Saban sold rights to Disney but suppose we all have to grow up at some time. Thanks ever so much, it's been brilliant to look at stuff like this again :)

Many fear that the recent tragedy in Japan may affect the current Super Sentai, Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, as what happened with the Sarin Gas Attacks and Ohranger. But aside from delaying the upcoming 199 Hero Gokaiger movie, it appears nothing will change because for starters, Gokaiger isn't dark to begin with.

EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT JOB!!! This should seriously be be made into a behind the scenes documentary on Power Rangers DVDs. As a kid I loved power rangers, but as an adult I feel a little cheated cause I've watched Dairanger and it's my favorite sentai. I understand for marketing reasons why Saban didn't use the Dairanger costumes, but it would've been great to see the suits used and it would've been a lot easier for the Saban editing team! I can only imagine the hours spent

A children's fad that died out. Just like Ninja Turtles before. Which is quite fitting since they're kind of similar. A group of teenagers who wear specific colors and fight evil with martial arts. Both concepts are completely outlandish and Ninja Turtles was being made into live-action films around the time that Power Rangers, another live-action production, was becoming popular. I love finding these similarities.
