If you have a tin of shoe polish in your pocket, you can roll up the tp after giving it a good coating, stick it down into the polish and use it like a wick in a candle. After it burns out you can poke a hole in the lid of the tin and use it to make char cloth. Or simply use it as a container for your fishing kit, and other goodies.

I'm from an earlier time, and before the MRE we had C-Rats (Combat Rations, or if you were Air Force, MIFFs, or Meal In Flight Feeding). The food in these came in cardboard cans, and one would be the "baked nasty", a cinnamon roll type of "thing" that was so dry it literally turned to powder when you tried to get it out of the can. The trick to eating this was the saving grace of the fruit can containing fruit in heavy syrup. What you did was eat the fruit first (usually pears, mixed fruit, or peaches) then take the syrup and poor it into the can with the baked nasty, give it a good mix, and you ended up with a right flavorful cinnamon fruit pudding, of sorts.
