When a team is added to a league, it's called an expansion team in its first season. Expansion teams are rarely good in their first few years, since they haven't had time to build a roster of good players yet, so they are held to lower standards than existing teams. The phrase "the expansion New York Mets" is a reminder to the reader that the Mets are an expansion team and they need to be judged accordingly.

There’s an interesting connection between this puzzle and another NY Times puzzle from today. Finding it, however, will be left as an exercise for the reader out of respect to the “no spoilers” rule. HINT: It involves the left half of the puzzle but not baseball or onesies.
