Brel's level is so HIGH, there's no BEST song in my opinion. So was Serge Gainsbourg speaking about the classics ! I'm French and not that much into French music but there are GEMS. OK Jacques is Belgian but don't report it ! ;) Kisses to all !

It's important to add that Jacques Brel was also a great actor and even film maker (later). He was "playing" his songs on stage like no one else, living the moment with total intensity. An extremely authentic character.

Jacques Brel is belgian and an abolute singing legend in France. Considered as the greatest among the great, in terms of story telling and emotions. This song Ne me quitte pas was elected the most beautiful song of the 20th century in France. The lyrics are pure poetry, I will post these in french and translated in english in another post. He is great inspiration for Lara (and of course many others) in terms of full commitment to the story. She does prefer however another of his song called Voir un ami pleurer, she said this is for her the most beautiful song in french language and she did a cover.

@@mikaelzajac6804 there were different polls, but Ne me quitte pas was always in the top 2, either #1 or #2. In another one, Avec le temps from Leo Ferré was ranked #1 just above Ne me quitte pas. As a side note, Lara also made a cover of Mistral Gagnant 😀

"Ne me quitte pas" is considered by some as "Brel's ultimate classic". It was written after Brel's mistress "Zizou" (Suzanne Gabriello) threw him out of her life.Zizou was pregnant with Brel's child, but Brel refused to acknowledge the child as his own. Zizou later had an abortion due to Brel's actions. . In a 1966 interview, Brel said that "Ne me quitte pas" was not a love song, but rather "a hymn to the cowardice of men", and the degree to which they were willing to humiliate themselves. He knew, he said, that it would give pleasure to women who assumed it was a love song, and he understood that.

Lyrics translated in english: Don’t leave me We must forget All can be forgotten That has already passed away Forget the time Of misunderstandings And the time lost Trying to know “how” Forget those hours That sometimes kill With slaps of “why” The heart of happiness Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me I will give to you Pearls made of rain From countries Where it never rains I will work the land All my life and beyond To cover your body With gold and with light I will make a land Where love will be king Where love will be law Where you will be queen Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me I will invent, for you Fanciful words That you’ll understand I will tell you About those lovers Who have twice seen Their hearts set ablaze I will tell you The story of the king Who died of not having Ever met you Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me We’ve often seen Fire flowing again From an ancient volcano Considered too old It’s said that there are Fire-scorched lands That yield more wheat Than the best April And when evening comes With a burning sky The red and the black- Are they not joined together? Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me I won’t cry anymore I won’t talk anymore I will hide over there To watch you Dance and smile And to hear you Sing and then laugh Let me become The shadow of your shadow The shadow of your hand The shadow of your dog Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me Don’t leave me

Hello Rollen, happy to see you again here. About this song, the great Édith Piaf said that a man shouldn't talk like that, should never stoop so low in front of a woman, lol. It was a time when it was considered that a man should be a man in all circumstances and should never show weakness. Other times, other mores as we say in France. Today, the view of human behavior, the man, the woman, and their respective roles have changed. We allow the man to be more sensitive, to be able to express his emotions. Yet some young people today tend to confuse sensitivity and sentimentality. However, it's not at all the same thing. Anyway, thank you for this reaction on our late Jacques, one of the greatest singers of all time. Try "Le port d'Amsterdam" and "Ces gens-là" (there's a version in a video on YT with English subtitles for each of these two songs of Brel) and you'll fall off your chair in front of what you'll see and listen to. Artists like Stromae or Lara Fabian come from what can be called "the school of the French song." This goes back a long way; Jacques Brel, Serge Reggiani, Yves Montand, Edith Piaf (their mother to everyone in the song. It was she who paved the way, showed how a song had to live, give it a breath of life, fleeting like the duration of a piece, but make it become a masterpiece), Charles Aznavour, Léo Ferré, Serge Lama (all French singers, except Brel who's Belgian. But he lived and spent his entire career in France) and so many others came from there. It's the school of street artists, where we sang without a microphone and often even without any instrument. To retain passers-by, it was then necessary to have a beautiful voice and know how to express feelings to perfection to attract the attention of the public who passed there. If we didn't know how to do that, people passed on, and we didn't earn our living. This way of singing has remained the hallmark of the French song. Take care of yourself and love each other, guys; peace!

He wrote the lyrics after his pregnant lover Zizou, kicked him to the curb. He refused to believe the baby was his, and she subsequently had an abortion, giving the attitude he held about her pregnancy. Sitting in the "Au Rêve" bar, on the northern slopes of Montmartre from which he could see Zizou's apartment across the square, he wrote this song. Interestingly, though it's passionate, he didn't think of it as a love song, but as an apology to women. He said, "this is not a love song, but a song about the cowardice of men." Edith Piaf didn't think that was manly, but her men always beat her and used her. A man can be strong and "manly" and still apologize while not being a jerk. On a side note, the tune was inspired by the second - slow - movement of Franz Liszt's Hungarian Dance #6

Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Je ne vais plus pleurer Je ne vais plus parler Je me cacherai là À te regarder Danser et sourire Et à t'écouter Chanter et puis rire Laisse-moi devenir L'ombre de ton ombre L'ombre de ta main L'ombre de ton chien Mais Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas

Thanks a million , your so touching reaction brought tears in my eyes. Huge, awesome and iconic song. Love your so pertinent analysis. About English covers, my fav by far are those done by three icons: Dusty Springfield (with a verse in French) and Scott Walker and Ray Charles. Nina Simone, as for her, sang it totally in French. A bunch of others artists covered it: Neil Diamond, Franck Sinatra, Cindy Lauper, Marianne Faithfull, Brenda Lee, and so many others .Brel was a huge songwriter and performer. Several of his songs were covered. For example: Amsterdam by David Bowie and Scott Walker ..., "Seasons in the sun" by Terry Jack, Marc Almond, Nirvana, Dionne Warwick, ..."The dove" by Joan Baez, "If we only have love" Olivia Newton John, Shirley Bassey, Johnny Mathis, You should react to another very sad song of 1977 with outstanding orchestration titled "Orly" where he sings "Life does not make gifts" ( = nothing in life is free).

Man, I am so glad you were touched by Brel, an infinite poet. As a belgian, 50 years old, I need to suggest Arno, another great belgian poet! He is also a monument. The music is different, the era is different but the passion is similar. If you're curious, I would suggest 'Quelqu'un a touché à ma femme' (someone has touched my woman), 'Dans les yeux de ma mère' (in the eyes of my mother) or for 'Oh la la la', one of his best hits (much more rocky though).

It is great that you didn't want the subtitles but now you can read them, and have a real idea what the song is about. Enjoy it, anyway

Ne me quitte pas Il faut oublier Tout peut s'oublier Qui s'enfuit déjà Oublier le temps Des malentendus Et le temps perdu À savoir comment Oublier ces heures Qui tuaient parfois À coups de pourquoi Le cœur du bonheur Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Moi je t'offrirai Des perles de pluie Venues de pays Où il ne pleut pas Je creuserai la terre Jusqu'après ma mort Pour couvrir ton corps D'or et de lumière Je ferai un domaine Où l'amour sera roi Où l'amour sera loi Où tu seras reine Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Je t'inventerai Des mots insensés Que tu comprendras Je te parlerai De ces amants là Qui ont vu deux fois Leurs cœurs s'embraser Je te raconterai L'histoire de ce roi Mort de n'avoir pas Pu te rencontrer Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas On a vu souvent Rejaillir le feu De l'ancien volcan Qu'on croyait trop vieux Il est paraît-il Des terres brûlées Donnant plus de blé Qu'un meilleur avril Et quand vient le soir Pour qu'un ciel flamboie Le rouge et le noir Ne s'épousent-ils pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Je ne vais plus pleurer Je ne vais plus parler Je me cacherai là À te regarder Danser et sourire et À t'écouter Chanter et puis rire Laisse-moi devenir L'ombre de ton ombre L'ombre de ta main L'ombre de ton chien Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas Ne me quitte pas

too bad you don't know french Brel's mother language was dutch and he put words together the way french would not do and the poetry in French was wonderful, He wrote music and wLyrics. He didn't sing he lived tthe song . he was not handsome but when he sung he radiated beauty I made a poor translation it is amzing in french Don't leave me You have to forget Everything can be forgotten Who is already running away, To forget time Of misunderstandings And the time wasted Figuring out how To forget those hours That sometimes killed With the "why" The heart of happiness Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me I'll give you Pearls of rain From a land Where it doesn't rain I'll dig the earth til after my death To cover your body With gold and light I'll make an estate Where love will be king Where love will be law Where you will be queen Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me I will invent for you some Crazy words That you will understand I'll tell you About those lovers Who twice saw Their hearts set on fire I'll tell you The story of this king Who died because he couldn't meet you Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me We've often seen the fire come again of the old volcano we thought to be too old It is said there are scorched earth Giving more wheat Than a better April, And when evening comes For a sky to blaze Red and black Don't they marry Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me I won't cry anymore I won't talk anymore I'll hide here Watching you Dancing and smiling And listening to you Singing and laughing Let me become The shadow of your shadow The shadow of your hand The shadow of your dog but, Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me Don't leave me

Too bad, you forgot to put the subtitles :) So I understand the song because it's the only language I speak lol, but not what you say. It's a magnificent song by the greatest Belgian singer, whom we all know in France. It's a beautiful heartbreaking love song. When I see what state you were in, luckily Angie wasn't there, it would have taken a box of Kleneex :))) It's been a long time since I listened to it, thank you for this choice. This is the first time I've watched a reaction that isn't on Dimash. But when I saw it was Jacques Brel, I came running. If you want to listen to another of his magnificent songs, I recommend "sur le port d'Amsterdam" . It's a song about the life of people around a port, superb.
