Anybody can model. Are you going to walk for VS? Maybe not. But different companies look for different things. As long as you have the confidence, someone is probably going to be intrigued. It’s okay to be realistic, but don’t tear people down (especially when you have zero experience in the industry).

Anybody can model in the same sense that anybody can create a social media account. But in the classic sense of being booked for ad campaigns or catalog, no, not everyone can be that kind of model. Unless for shock value, it would be bad for a company’s bottomline to book a 5/10 when they can get a 7+/10 for the same price.

@@gabe-jerome yeah exactly. as someone who has modelled for 10 years (under multiple agencies in different countries- not just a self proclaimed "instagram model") i can say that sure anyone can "model"... but that doesn't mean you're going to make a lot of money or book a lot of work under big and well-loved brands. it's a rough industry, even if its "loosening up" in some areas it is still very strict and quite controlled as for what is most desirable which is tall, and skinny models- which is what modelling has primarily been centered around.

For all the people coming in with misconceptions. None of us are “self proclaimed models” we do work in the industry in all fronts. We book gigs and we get paid. Your misnomer of what it means to be a model is honestly interesting. You equate “beauty” with worth and that is a projection of your own insecurities. What is a model but a person. A person who is comfortable in front of a camera or in a room full of people. You can’t just be “conventionally attractive” and be a model. I have worked in front and behind the camera for shoots and “looks” only gets you so far. Plus the same people shaming us for being “not model quality” or the same people who shame other models for not being accurate representations of “themselves”. Regardless, your insecurities are your own and are valid, but that ain’t got nothing to do with me and my shine. I am a model. I’m showing that you don’t have to fit the “mold” to be a model and you deserve to love yourself to the point where you can be in spaces not traditionally made for you. I’m 5ft 9 1/2 and I’m large and in charge getting gigs and I just got signed. What are you doing?

Weight is also genetic and environmental, and science shows it's not mainly lifestyle. That said people's characters shouldn't be based on their look but when you're talking about modeling, you're selling an image of yourself and that can be judged. It just so happens that for the need of specific markets, height is still a big thing. They didn't comment on everyone's height, only on the ones that were targeting those markets.
