@@joyfulserendipity4650 i dont think so. Usually imperial wives are chosen because of their family/clan and what they can contribute to the court. Sometimes in the Qing Dynasty, the Emperor, Grand Empress Dowager, and Mother Empress Dowager would hold a feast or party and invite all the noble families and their daughters in hopes of a noble lady catching the emperor’s attention. The Empress is invincible, she can punish or even execute other concubines if they commit major crimes in the harem ( even if they are as noble as an imperial honorable consort ). The empress has a lot of privileges that other concubines never have, the empress cannot be easily removed and even the emperor respect her face and part. So no one dared to confront the empress, no one dared offend her, her words were like the emperor‘s command, sometime the emperor does not dare to punish the empress. That's why concubines only dare to fight with each other but dare not fight the empress and the fact that the concubines toppled the empress to take the throne is considered the most absurd thing in Chinese harem films.

In a linguistic context, the term ‘Chinese’ is more often associated with the country ‘China’. To be precise, the Qing Dynasty was Manchu, but not Han Chinese.
@hadiyahalkauthar4 жыл бұрын
@@gp2779This may be true today, but it certainly was not back then. The Manchus were called foreign invaders by the majority ethnic Han Chinese during the Qing Dynasty. Please take a look at your history books. All male Han Chinese were even forced to adopt the Manchu Queue hairstyle (shaved at the front and long at the back), on pain of execution, by their foreign Qing rulers. This generated great resentment among the ethnic Han Chinese since their Confucian tradition forbade both men and women from cutting their hair. You can say so...the Empress is the main wife and the others are concubines
@keizelharf53934 жыл бұрын
Yes. All of them were Emperor's wives. Empress was his main wife and concubine was secondary wife. All of them were legally wives and their children were legitimate child.
@ktgirl-oh9px3 жыл бұрын
Empress was the primary wife. Concubines were just that concubine. So the children born from the empress, regardless of age or anything else, had higher social status and the sons more likely to be heirs.
@msmagnolia16273 жыл бұрын
So, if the empress cannot bear any children, is the children from the concubines can be the next emperor? Or do they have hierachy status among the concubines?
@ktgirl-oh9px3 жыл бұрын
@@msmagnolia1627 Well of course there's hierarchy amongst the concubines as well. The ones with powerful families as their backing will also provide their sons with better backing in the imperial court. But yes the sons of the concubines could inherit the throne and they did inherit the throne in history. Emperor Yongzheng was not the son of the official wife. Emperor Jiaqing was the son of Imperial Noble Consort Ling (Yanxi Palace and Ruyi's Royal Love). But in these cases if the official wife survives her husband then she becomes the Empress Dowager even if the sitting emperor is not her son. The emperor also has to show filial piety to her and call her mother. And then the empress could adopt a son of a concubine and his name would be recorded under her name in the Imperial records. Anyway, as the primary wife of the emperor she wielded quite an influence in inner court as long as she doesn't get deposed.

No wonder the Emperor need so many woman, in term to find one with better look. Or... it because the effect of "the ugly among the worst would become the prettiest after several month". Even all the eunuch's face so broken to add more effect. That's why those Imperial Noble Consort looks so old, coz in Emperor eyes they're the best! (Beside killing all the the women who looks better than them, or maybe the same would die too).

There were different beauty standards for each dynasty back then. In the Qing Dynasty, having an extremely beautiful consort or empress would be a curse because they were thought to be vixens who were sent to destroy the kingdom.

Why Manchurian empire becomes Chinese dynasty??? Manchus are not Chinese. Culturally, ethnically they are not Chinese. The Manchurian empire which you call the qing dynasty must belong to Manchus.
@gp27794 жыл бұрын
In a linguistic context, the term ‘Chinese’ is more often associated with the country ‘China’. Thus, the Qing Dynasty and the Manchurian people are very much Chinese, along with the Uyghurs, Tibetans and tribal people of Miao in Yunan. To be precise, the Qing Dynasty was Manchu, but not Han Chinese.

It is worth noticing that very few Mandchus still knew how to speak mandchurian at the end of Qing dynasty except the imperial family. The emperors noticed and complained that even mandchurian officials were unable to understand basic mandchurian; they've been quite sinicised throughout the time
@christinem42663 жыл бұрын
They conquered China land and resources, got themselves sinicized with Chinese culture, many assimilated into the Chinese. Qing dynasty never fully belongs to Manchus. But Manchu will no longer be Chinese if they can get independence in the future.
