To avoid confusion, it might help to point out that the stripes for firsties are basically the same as the "half stripe" for LTJG and LCDR. That's what makes a midshipman Ensign visually distinct from a fleet Ensign.

@@WarBondz : Why do many people, especially sailors, use the term "rate," instead of "rating"?

SV So rates are the paygrade of the sailor (PO3/E4 is a rate) and a rating is the occupation of the sailor (Boatswain’s mate is a rating). I would assume that when sailors are referring to rates, they are referring to their paygrade but it could be possible for many to just mix up the terminology due to how close they resemble each other.

@@WarBondz : First of all, I saw your other video, "Why Accuracy Matters." And to borrow one of your excerpts from that video, "misinformation spreads just as fast as factual information." Rating = Occupational Specialty Rate = Rating + Paygrade such as SOC, BM1, AM2, MM3 ect. Navy sailors & officers mixed it up all the times (I used to do the same myself), even though, they keep telling young sailors to "PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAIL." I still remember one particular question on a Navy exam that asked "What is the term for an "Occupational Specialty?" and I put down "RATE," which was wrong.

Not all officers wear a star above their stripes. Staff Corps officers wear the insignia of their Corps. For shame, midshipman.

The official USNA Site only listed officer ranks, along with some other PDFs. May be a large oversight on my part so I’ll try to look for some information on Petty Officer ranks and whip up a diagram to post in the comment section. Thanks for the comment!

Yo I saw second and first class midshipmen at the nex at tsc right across from rtc and I was lost man I thought these where some weird chiefs but now founding out there just rotc people

Real actual ranks on full uniforms would have been most helpful, and asking to refer back to previous screenshots is most unhelpful. All in all, I give this video a three out of five stars. I have to go look for a better video to get a better understanding.

In big Navy the Lieutenant Comander wear large bar and small bar make it simple by making 3 ranks equal one large bar like after ensign is 1 gold bar, lieutenant j g is silver bar then lieutenant is 2 gold bars that add to 3 rank then lieutenant comander is one large gold bar comamder is large gold bar and 1 small gold bar as I remembered then came the captain is an eagle or Navy Call eagel 1 on each radio check
