I had an Asian water monitor growing up. He was a pretty chill dude. Also knew a guy who had one even bigger than mine that would come running like a huge dog when you called him.

Aw man, I had one, and he was an ass. Wild caught, so he was not used to people, and when he bit, he just wouldn't let go.

@@Victoriaghh Sorry to hear that. Mine would occasionally whip me with his tail like a green iguana if he thought I was getting uppity, but he'd sit on my shoulder or my lap for hours and chill while we watched TV. He never even tried to bite me. He was only about 5-6' tail and all. We went out of town one weekend, and all four of his heating lights blew while we were gone, so he got cold. He got an upper respiratory tract infection from that, and I got antibiotics from the vet. He didn't want to take them, and I scratched his gum/mouth with the syringe (no needle) trying to force them into him. He developed mouth rot from that scratch, and that ended him.

@@kizmo2317 That's so unfortunate... :( Some of my snakes got URIs and it's a lot easier to give them medication than a lizard I'd imagine!!

@@Victoriaghh Dude, when a 6 foot V. salvator don't wanna take meds, it's like WWIII. Even during all that though, he never once tried to bite me. We came home and I immediately saw all his lights were out, and he simultaneously blew a bubble of snot out of his nose to show me what a bad daddy I was. Never thought about snakes being a whole lot easier. Trying to get his mouth open was like trying to open a coconut with a pair of toothpicks.

Thats kinda just a metaphor. They usually let go within about 30-45 minutes in "bite and hold" situations and in more rare circumstances hold onto a person for up to 2 hours or more.

Based on Clients reptile room, i would move the Crocodile monitor to second place. The poison from the Gila monster may be lethat, but getting half a leg ripped to shreds would have me bleed out in a short time.
@ReptilesRule16
@ReptilesRule16 16 күн бұрын
I would put crocodile monitors much higher on the list because they have the largest teeth of any lizard - including the Komodo dragon - and one of the worst venoms of any monitor. I also researched a bit and found that a woman in Papua New Guinea was bitten by a crocodile monitor in 1983 and died of infection from the bacteria in the lizard's mouth. I would also put blue tree monitors somewhere on the list (maybe instead of beaded lizards) because even though they are smaller lizards, they have some of the most neurotoxic venom of the monitors people bitten by these monitors have seen symptoms such as immense pain, muscle spasms, nausea and much more. I don't believe their bites to be fatal but are one of the few lizards where you should definitely seek professional medical advice and attention if bitten. I'm pretty sure their venom need to be so toxic and fast acting to catch birds and other arboreal creatures - similar to sea snakes needing fast acting venom to catch fish.

I live in India and one time an asian water monitor had entered my grandmother's house and was basically climbing up the window. That's when i learnt a myth about monitor lizards basically "a monitor lizard has poison tipped tail and if one whips you with it's tail your skin will rot away". I mean that is a pretty dumb thing to believe ngl.

The most notorious of the monitor bites and has the largest teeth, and it gets put on the bottom XD Id have put the puppy dog asian at the bottom rather than the croc but ok. I went to Indonesia this past august. We saw water monitor in Borneo and Komodo dragons in Komodo. The Komodo experience was so disapointing, we saw 2 little wild ones next to a beach and we were excited because next stop was the National Park. It was a total scam. They have the biggest dragons drugged under the shadow of trees so tourist can see them very close and take photos with them. I totally hated it. I would rather not see one single one than seeing them this way, was a very sad experience.

I've had an asian water monitor and a tegu, but I genuinely don't think monitors are suited to captivity whatsoever. Tegus can adjust, assuming you have an entire room for a grow tent to use as an enclosure. Also assuming you don't mind cutting up various organ meats for your tegu lol
