For me it's: 1_ Super turbo; 2_ shodown 2; kof 98 um; shodown 5 special; 6_ kof 2002 um; 7_ fatal fury special. I missed 3rd strike alpha2 and Garou but judging by yt evo tourney videos 3rd strike would be on my list had I played it. Is it Garou worth picking up? Do people still play it using fightcade or something on those lines?

Hi there Nabil. You been doing an awesome work on spreading some NeoGeo love and history, especialy Samurai Shodown, my favourite SNK series. My favourite 3 in order are: 1- Samurai Shodown 1, my first Samsho game on Sega Mega drive/Genesis and it was love at first sight. The characters, the style, the atmosphere, the soundtrack and the awesome gameplay just blew my mind whn I was younger. It was so ahead of it´s time. Of course, being a samurai and ninja fan really helped; 2- Samurai Shodown 2, got it on pc and played even more than the first one. The better graphics, the new characters(Earthquake was not on the Mega drive/Genesis version so it was new to me) and new movesets; 3- Samurai Shodown V Special, he game that made me rage quit more times than I can remenber, but also made me fall in love with the series again after the travesty that was Samsho Sen. Still waiting on the PC version of the 2019 release. Maybe it will become my number one. Keep up the good work Nabil, you deserve more subs! Cheers everyone and happy gaming to us all.

Basara is such a cool character its inspired me to dig more into this game and its history. Admittedly I had never heard of it before the new reboot, and it's fantastic. The characters are all super unique. SNK deserves more love

Funny, it was exactly the same for me, I found Basara to be a really interesting character and it was only because of him that I started to love the series. The Neo Geo version on Steam back then... That's still worth an answer to me 5 years later ^^

I'd say Samurai Shodown 2 is still the best in the series, although personally I still kind of like the original Samurai Shodown a little better (maybe just nostalgia, because it was the one of the earlier games on got on my Neo Geo home system). I do agree that the Samurai Shodown title on the Neo Geo Pocket was awesome. So glad to hear they'll be releasing it for the Switch, and I only hope they offer it as a standalone title as I don't want to buy the whole Samurai Shodown 2019 game (already have it for the PS4) to get the Pocket port.

After playing the saga a lot, the 5 Special is still the best for me in terms of combat mechanics, it has the best gameplay in my opinion. The only thing in which it falls short is in the scenarios, since it has few compared to 2 that came out many years before. Very good video.

I've been playing the series since the beginning, back in 93. Your ranking is fine, but I would put 3 much closer to the top. It's a great game and I like it way more than 4, 5 and even 1. 3, 5sp and the new one are my favorites.

Great list! Depending on your preference, I feel like you could juggle the order of the top three entries quite easily without much controversy. Also, in my opinion, samsho 3 and 4 were the games with the overall best music and graphical presentation, despite issues with gameplay.

Samsho II is my favorite, it was ahead of its time is so many ways, haven't played the new one though. Regarding the rest, just switch Samsho V Sp with Samsho IV and we have pretty much the same list 😎👍

SS64 and SS64 2 is very underrated. I have played most of all fightin games and my opinion is these two games for hyper neo geo 64 are masterpiece. The gameplay is unique and very deep, the atmosphere and sounds are amazing, the best character Asura is in SS 64 2. Unfortunately these two games аre not popular because they are not ported for console.

Update: SNK released a video called “Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection”. This collection includes all Samurai Shodown games that appeared in Neo Geo: Samurai Shodown I, II, III, IV, V, and V Special. However, there’s one more Samurai Shodown game that never appeared in Neo Geo. For the first time, after 16 years, this game, which was location tested but never released. The updated version of Samurai Shodown V Special, Samurai Shodown V Perfect (also known as Samurai Shodown V Special Final Edition). This unreleased version have new story elements and endings. As an owner of a consolized HNG64, I must say Samurai Shodown 64: Warrior's Rage be so low in the ranking just proves the game is trully underrated. Not the best SamSho game, but deserving better recognition... At least, the game could be above the original SamSho64 in the list, once the 1st release was criticized of how the 3D movement breaks the pace. Turning the sequel in a 2D line, with the 3D aspect turned into an axis changer like Star Gladiator and Wild Ambition was just the right choice. For those who don't know because of the limited access of the game, the Slash/Burst system really kicks in this game because the characters really feels different between their versions, changing even normals (and not being the same character changing only one special move, like SamSho 3 and 4). Even some characters are tottaly different entities between the versions, like Asura, Shiki (these two being Yuga's puppets) and Hanma (this one being a robot version of Hanma created by himself to protect his princess), or an "evil" or "mind-controled" version of that char, like Haohmaru (controlled by Yuga), Kazuki and Sougetsu (controlled by Enja and Suija, respectivelly).

Nice to see SSII on the NGPC on there, it was a great game (as was the B+W version). These lists will always have a certain amount of personal opinion to them - personally, my list would go (from best to worst) SSIV>SSVP> SSII>SSIII>SS -- I don't really count the 2019 SS as comparable; more as an interesting offshoot. It doesn't help that I really don't find the 3D style appealing. I put IV above V Special/Perfect because it's more of a trad. SS game in its simpler core mechanics. Special/Perfect is an incredibly technical game with far more complexity. III wasn't actually a poor game; and II is great (and better than I, which even though it's at the bottom of the pile, is still a really good game). It would be lovely to see a GGX style SS (high-res sprites with lots of fluid 2D animation) made - but I think the decision to go with 3D is largely a lazy one related to cost. Good 2D animation is just way harder to do for the same money (not lazy rotoscoped 3D). Last Blade 1 & 2 remain the spiritual successor to the series IMHO.

1st: SS2 (comes closest to perfecting the "normal move"-centric engine) 2nd: SS3 (best graphics + mood, some short but juicy combos)3rd: SS1 (nostalgia reasons) 4th: NGPC SS 64:2 (a lot of charm, and ironically better looking than the NG64 version!) 5th: SS 2019 (mostly for being available on current gen hardware)Every other (fighting) SS title is IMO either a straight-up failure (the 3D games) or just a worse version of the top two (SS IV-VI).

I played SS3, SS4 and SS5 for more than 10 years, but I still preferred SS6 because of the solid engine. All of the previous games have really annoying glitches, specially when zooming in or out too fast, moves that won't come out on the edges of the screen and incredibly laggy inputs. Though I agree SS6 doesn't have the same awesome sinister tone, the game is faster, more responsive and really solid. If the console version was released on steam with good netcode, I would instabuy.

Even in 2022, i buy de SamSho Collection just To remember. SamSho 1 i think: “Damn the game is good, but is TOO HEAVY, lack of movments, but is OK. A few hours later i Play SamSho 2, and think: “Daaamn every aspects that i see a problem in first game they correct, without lost the “essence” and “Core Mecanic” (A Fighting Game focused on Counter and Whiffs) With splendid atmosphere. I believe that if SNK released a patched version of Samurai Shodown Warriors Rage (PSone) correcting input delay lag (by far this was one of the worst thing from this game, fr, there's a point you just give up on using special moves on the story mode and choose to relie only on normal light and heavy atacks), making more fluid gameplay, adding classic characters, revamping the ost, then *maybe* it would be a decent game. However that would never happen 'cause it's seems SNK likes to pretend this game don't exist (nice choice for them btw)

While I have not played Nakoruru ADV, I think the reasons why you put it so low on the top seemed a bit unfair, just because it was not a sequel or the same genre of SamSho RPG, but you never commented on whether the story of that Visual novel was good or bad. For others, the rest of the things I don't agree with are more personal tastes. I know that half the world is going to lynch me for saying this, but I have never been a fan of SamSho V Special because I thought it was quite Edgy, although obviously there has to be blood and death because we are talking about sword duels I never liked that the franchise introduced the concept of fatalitys, for me a death in a samurai duel has to show the impact in a minimalist way, something that from the first game they did well, although they were introduced in SamSho IV they did not seem to me as over the top as they were in V Special In case this game has things that I love but also things that I hate, it has very good mechanics and balance but I don't like fatalitys, I love completely new characters (with the exception of Sankuro and Kusaregedo who are the ones I hate the most) but no I like the ones based on the Bust mode of previous games (with the exception of Rera who is my favorite character of all SamSho), and finally although I had a very good amount of fanservice for having all the bosses of the previous games, I did not like that the story of V vanila will be removed and that they simplified the scenarios of that game. Possibly my favorite SamSho is 2, because personally I am more a fan of the time when SamSho had more vivid colors instead of the dark tones introduced in 3, I would say that the VI should not be so low since I like that it has colors alive, but you're right that it felt weird for a Samsho. Finally, I have to say that, although the SamSho in 3D were not very good mechanically, I would like to see several characters from such games as DLC in SamSho 2019 since I like several designs and stories of them, and although it is something Extremely unlikely, I would also like you to introduce characters from the other 2 games that are not fighting games to the main line.

Sam Sho 2 came out on the PS1 in Japan, along with the first game on the same disc. The disc is the Samurai Spirits Fencing Pack. Took me a good while to get a copy from a US seller on Ebay for a decent price, but don't expect to spend under $50 for it, and you'll have to live with plenty of load times on both games. Hwoever, if you can get past the load times, both games on the pack are quite solid.

Beautiful art direction for SS2019? Characters are fat, stocky (no abdomen) and have giant hands and feet, looking like dwarves or gnomes. They don't even move like they do in the best 2D games (try to make a side by side comparison of stance, running and attack animations from SS3, SS4, SS5 and SS6).

Sumurai showdown 1/2/5 (special) has the same problem when it comes to Vs mode ..grabs grabs grabs players spam grab in these parts .Samurai 4 gives you the idea that your landing a series of combos however these are set patterns that the game makers did to try and mimic mortal 3.Samurai 3 is the fastest pace with the best balance of characters and while most people have a problem with the infinite glitch for me this is what really makes the game interesting.As for the other parts I have never really played on a high competitive level so I can't comment .So for me 2,3 and part 1 are the best .

Good list but I hate to be the person that uses the term overrated for a game but samurai showdown V special is overrated. A lot of the criticism you had for 6 I also think should be said for 5 special as it's more of a combo based game than a true samurai showdown game. Plus I hate that they made the super move very easy to do and the same button combination for every character. I would rank the main series only: 8. Samurai Shodown 5 7. Samurai Shodown 6 6. Your review seems to me quite competent. I have avoided so far the newest Samurai Shodown reboot game, because to me Samurai Shodown is a 2D game. I did not like what was done for KoF or, especially, for SF4&5 when they moved to 3D graphics. After this review though, I decided I should at least give it a try.

I agree. The hand drawn art of the older fighting games has a charm that I sorely miss. I hope some company takes on the likes of capcom and snk to make pure 2d fighters with high quality animation similar to street fighter 3 and Garou Mark of the Wolves. At least give us 3D made to look hand drawn like what ArcSys Works has done with Dragon Ball Fighter Z and the new Guilty Gear games. I hope capcom does that cel shaded flat look for Street Fighter 6. I'm sick of the plastic "toyetic" look of these 3D models.

It was not just the looks to be more beautiful but the gameplay itself has been massively affected by switching to 3D graphics. I did not like the general feel of SF4 and SF5. Garou first and Guilty Gear X afterwards have shown what you can do with high definition 2D graphics.

Samurai Shodown is absolutely better in 2d but I would still give 2019 a shot. It looks great, has good music and the gameplay took mechanics from 2,4 and 5 special with rage explosion returning, dodge rolls and fatalities. As a PC player, my Top 5 1 Samurai Shodown V Special (madness on Fightcade, and my favourite roster) 2 Samurai Shodown 2 (the game which made me discover the serie. Nostalgia factor...) 3 Samurai Shodown IV (gorgeous graphics and animations, perfect atmosphere) 4 Samurai Shodown 5 Samurai Shodown 2019 (should be number one, but because of the absence of crossplay between PC and PS4, the absence of crossplay between Steam and EGS, the fact that you have to use Discord to find players, makes the game less interesting. Very disappointing the fact that SNK continues to ignore PC gamers, and to use some old characters as DLCs instead of regular fighters. Should be number one because honestly I think it has the best combat system of the serie and has the most balanced roster...maybe in 5 years when the game will use all the right features for a modern fighting game...)

I was about to give you credit but Sam Sho 2019 as number one? You either must be a millennial or a prisoner of the moment. It's a very good game but it's a game made on a shoestring budget and the dated subpar graphics show. This game could've come out as is for the PS2. The first 5 Sam Shows were works of hand drawn sprite art full of production value. Re-analyze your list

I guess Im glad I was introduced to the SS franchise with Warriors Rage (PS1) cause I seem to be the only one who enjoys the game 🤷😄 like I really do. I dont get why people dont like it. The characters are fine, some even actually more likable or cooler than some of the originals. So yeah. Ill enjoy it by myself 😋

Ss4 will always be my favourite (2019 one excluded). Never liked 5 for a few reasons 1.No real story, felt like a special addition 2.Weird clone evil characters 3.Luck luster final boss 4.Some new characters sprites design didnt fit the game imo like yunfei

I do have to say the new Samurai Showdown game gave me hope for the series. After the dreadful Samurai Showdown Sen, and the lack of SNK games for many years, I believed the franchise to be dead. The newest Samurai Showdown is a great revival and I still play it to this day, even though the game is 2 years old. Now, with King of Fighters XV just around the corner, I'm excited to see SNK is really back in its true glory.

Sen: Looks like a decent game by itself, bad only in context. Warrior's Rage (PS1): Only good thing about this game are the blocky and pastel-colored visuals that still hold up to this day. Looks so slow and sluggish. ADV: ... 64 Warrior's Rage: See, it looks worse than the PS1 game IMO. It plays much better tho. VI: Lovely visuals, probably my favorite. The criticism is fair tho, it's a solid game by itself but fails the spirit of the original. 64: Looks fine (not as good as PS1 one, again) but plays well. In retrospect, I think it did a solid job of bringing the series to 3D. III: Looks fine, I do prefer the visuals to I and II. V: OK, it's alright, but what makes VI better then? Just the gameplay being truer to the original, despite the balance? Either way, V and VI have an art style I prefer to the old games. RPG: Looks swell. I: Definitely respect the gameplay, art direction and details, but the art style and graphics are a bit too dated for me. IV: Seems like a good compromise for me personally, art style being superior to I, II and III while being truer to the OG gameplay and with better balance than V and VI. II (Pocket): The game looks as good as it can be, so respect. Personally, handheld games never interest me. V Special: Oh, so that explains things. II: Again, just like for 1, I have maximum respect for II. However, outside of retro reasons, I feel like based on what you said in this video there is no reason for a newcome/outsider like myself to play this over V Special. 2019: The game is apparently pretty damn great (except for no rollback), so respect. Personally I am more interested in the 2D ones. All in all, thanks for the video. I suppose I should try II and then IV, to see if it is a direct update. Then V Special. I guess if I don't like the core SamSho gameplay I can try VI instead, since it comes off as a SamSho game only in name but is pretty gud otherwise.

You can find it cheap, it's got tutorials to get the basics down, decent amount of characters, you can find a lot of info out there on it, and it's still a bit more active today (even in the upcoming EVO this year). Do be warned, when I first played it I wasn't used to this style of game and didnt really like it. Put some more time in, learn how it works, and you'll come to love it. Then you can go back and try the others, like I'm going to do 😂

You almost got it right. Samurai Shodown II is #1 in my book. I've never stopped admiring the perfect balance of graphics, gameplay, characters, pace, and not an overwhelming number of special moves. It's the purists #1. In a sense...it took 24 years for it to be replaced on your list. That speaks to the enduring quality and pioneering spirit of Samurai Shodown II.
