I 100% agree with your feelings about BOTW and TOTK. In many respects, I don't consider them to be actual Zelda games at all. If the series is going to continue down this path, I'm afraid that I won't be playing any more of these games.

yeah i only kept playing TOTK to get all the hearts bc i just feel the need to in every zelda game 😂 but as an overall game and zelda especially, i was completely over it after 4 hrs of playing

It amazes me how many youtubers I've seen whose favorite Zelda is Majora's Mask. It's impressive given that game's somewhat rocky development that it ended up being the one that stuck with a lot of people the most. And I can see why. I still miss the transformation masks to this day.

I actually loved this too, the thing is, in my eyes, they’re both great games… but they’re horrible Zelda games. They’re the “least Zelda” Zelda games, if that makes sense.

@@Blurelia For me BotW was a great game but a horrible Zelda game. TotK however I hated as a game as well. Everything was completely rehashed from BotW and I felt like if you're not interesting in screwing around with building stuff then there is not much to enjoy.

Something I always enjoyed about Wind Waker is that the character of Link is the only one not a true hero of legend. You know, the whole Links are born into the world due to the curse of the repeating cycle of the three being reincarnated. OoT Link fucks with everything by taking himself out of the timeline. Wind Waker Link is just some 16 year old who took action when his sister got kidnapped. Continuing to fight when the world depended on it. Hell, ancient hylian characters constantly doubt if you can even do it with them saying stuff like "where is the hero of time?" or "we need the hero of time" etc. etc. The king of red lions basically going "this aint him, but it the best we got" but even he didn't believe we were a hero of legend. It isn't until the end that the Gods have to be like "nah, this kid is a hero. It doesn't matter if he was born into it, he proved he is one" so he is granted the ability to wield the triforce of courage that all the other links had to right to have out the gate. While he kind of becomes just a shell for the goddesses at the very end to defeat ganondorf (the wish on the triforce basically making it so the Goddesses ensured his and Zelda's victory), he still proves himself as a true hero with all his feats before and after his encounter in Ganon's Tower. Leaving behind a legacy and helping found a new hyrule shining with light and industrial creativity.

Regarding Sheik's identity as Zelda, I like how if you get the warp songs in the order they're displayed in the menu (Prelude of Light notwithstanding for obvious reasons), the last scene you get with Sheik before the reveal can be seen almost like the mask starting to slip in the moments before she's ready to actually reveal herself because of how obviously and personally worried she is for Impa when asking Link to go back her up.

@@GamewithAndy Just to be clear, when I say she's 'obviously and personally worried', I'm referring to the fact that unlike the other scenes where she teaches you a warp song where she seems to be deliberately vague, during the scene where she teaches you the Nocturne of Shadow she not only comes right out and tells you that Impa's a sage, but also makes what is likely a desperate plea of you given the context to 'destroy the evil shadow spirit and save Impa'.

Have you not played Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks yet? I suggest you do, and then make a video on your opinion about them, I played them throughout my childhood but never finished them, although I got to the fourth dungeon in spirit tracks, but I guess I won't finish them now that my ds's mic is broken. Sad times. Anyway, I'm glad to see that someone else also shares my opinion about Botw and Totk, and I'm also happy to see how the honey moon period on Totk didn't last anywhere close to as long as Botw did.

I think BotW and TotK are both great games, but they do discard the elements I enjoy Zelda for No classic hero's journey, puzzle become surmountable obstacles, dungeons are reductive and uninspired, items have no value and don't add to progression... it's a very different genre of Zelda These 2 games are definitely at the bottom of the list for me, despite how impressive they are at times

This is a nice change of pace, a lot of rankings I’ve seen have been similar. I don’t think I’ve ever seen SS so high. Feel the same about BOTW and TOTK only I enjoyed BOTW. The part I struggle with is “I appreciate BOTW for trying something different and breaking away from the Zelda formula that dominated the last 2 decades”. Those were my thoughts upon release and then I realized that they swapped it out for the open world sandbox formula that have been dominating for the last 2 decades. I remember getting half way through BOTW and thinking this is Skyrim with a Zelda sticker. Once I got to TOTK, it was RDR2 and Minecraft with a Zelda sticker. I’m hoping that they will meld the Zelda formulas for the next entry.

@@GamewithAndy oh I agreed with you there. I was feeling burned out on the series around TP so when they said they were going back to the series roots, I was definitely excited. I just didn’t realize we’d lose dungeons, story, and progressional items. Also good weapons. I know there’s a crowd who loves the degrading weapon system since it forces you try something new, but all I found was a pick up a weapon, it breaks, I pick up a new weapon. No weapon felt special. I have such fond memories of the master sword, big goron sword, the ball and chain, megaton hammer, hook shots, and fire rods. Nothing of the sort in the last two entries. Nintendo has made a lot of money off the last two entries so I won’t be surprised if they continue the trend. I just hope they’ll listen to some of the criticisms this time instead of KZbin shorts of people making bizarre inventions. I know they get a lot of views but I doubt a majority of players do that. Also maybe a little less freedom. No temple, beast, or shrine were difficult since they implemented so much freedom. I had to force myself not to use ascend or rewind time since they basically solved everything.

Putting BOTW and TOTK so low hurt me, but Majora's Mask being the top spot is perfect, and makes up for it. On a serious note, though, I am adoring this channel, and I only found it yesterday. Easily the best small channel I have ever found. Keep on rocking :D Link To Past is incredibly fun. Pity I stopped playing it when I moved - my TV doesn't work and I dislike handheld mode, especially with my bad screen. This makes me want to get playing more Zelda, though. I think the best element of Majora's Mask might be the implication of where that one weeping Deku scrub's kid is...

To be fair with twilight princess items; if you go for 100% or travel around the map and explore alot, youll get full use out of all of your items you find in the dungeons. Ball and Chain being a little bit of a stretch though (unless you like to use it to fight). But these items could have definitely been made for more use in general. also great video! Twilight Princess would be my #1 favorite, with MM and SS on 2nd and 3rd.

I would actually put TotK lower than BotW, the story was so inconsistent in regards to the previous game and most of the plot points where too repetitive. I'm not a big Zelda fan so I appreciate these two games as their own thing but I kinda get how disruptive must have felt for the hardcore fans. Nice work with your video!

100% agree re BotW’s lack of story. And all the dialogue feels so dry and dull to me in BotW and TotK. Maybe it’s the English localisation, but sometimes a character will laugh and I’m like 🤷‍♂️ where was the joke. Similar feelings about TotK

As disgusting as this may sound, I have never actually beaten an official Zelda game, aside from BOTW. I have played the original, the second, Ocarina of time, Majoras mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Link between worlds, BOTW and TOTK. I love the series and has been a pinnacle of my childhood. I just started playing Twilight Princess since I forgot the whole game, just want to say, the game is brilliant. Some my favorite dark story telling of any game, ever. Wish me luck on beating the game.

This is pretty much the exact same list I would make. I'd probably put Twilight Princess above OoT, but they're quite tied in my book, with OoT particularly elevated as it's kind of inseparable from Majora's Mask. The biggest difference is that I'd put Skyward Sword down at the bottom with Breath of the Wild. Both are games I actively hated while playing, though for very different reasons. I'd probably keep BotW at the bottom, because I actually do not want to even try TotK because of it, whereas I just think Skyward Sword had a very bad story that dragged on for what felt like the same length as BotW (not to let BotW off the hook either, it also dragged on until I was numb). Something worth mentioning about OoT -- which I don't see talked about anymore -- is it has one of the most tragic and shocking twists in gaming history, though that list has certainly grown since then. I wonder if it's because people have gotten used to much more direct, explicit story telling in games that it gets overlooked as people no longer seem to make the same connections with characters. Which is one of the pieces which sets the tone at the outset of Majora's mask, framing the entire story and its themes. I definitely put Majora's mask at the top of the list, though it didn't always sit there for me -- the game was a bit too difficult when I was a kid and scared me too much to fully commit to seeing it through. However, once I was a bit older I did see it through, it was clearly such a hidden and much maligned gem; it's good to see it getting recognition now (good video on it btw). I'm now a bit curious how you'd say the story in Metroid Prime holds up, another exploration based, 3D adventure game with an epistolary narrative. A big difference is there actually is a story (yes, I said it: BotW has no story), but you're still finding it in out of order fragments as you progress through the game. A big part of Metroid games is the immersion, and Metroid Prime's story is a part of that, where you see glimpses of what happened and have to piece it together with the world around you, which is itself a character of sorts. Anyway, Metroid: good exploration, Fire Emblem: good breaking weapons, BotW: not good.

True facts My first Zelda game was Breath of the Wild and when I got to the first dungeon I was really underwhelmed The only Zelda like games I’ve played before were the Darksiders games and those games had more interesting layouts and gimmicks in their dungeons than Breath of the Wild

To me what makes a good Zelda has always been the story and progression loop. This is why botw/totk are so different. Their story’s are weak but also the progression feel almost completely on the player and not the game. I loved my first runs of each and discovering all these new things throughout the game, but once you’ve seen it and learned it then you can’t really do it again. They are more of an experience than a game I’d like to return to. This makes it very hard for me to rank them compared to the other games.

Well, for what it's worth, as a player of Zelda games from the first generation on NES, BotW is the only one I bought and actually started, but stopped playing after about 3 hours. Eventually, I donated it to a friend who wanted it a lot more. And I didn't bother with TotK at all. My favorites (the ones I am most likely to return to spontaneously) are: 1. Link's Awakening 2. Zelda 1 3. Oracle of Ages 4. Oracle of Seasons 5. Minish Cap 6. Ocarina of Time 7. A Link to the Past 8. Zelda 2 9. Phantom Hourglass I have A Link Between Worlds and Majora's Mask remake as well, but I have not tried them yet. One day, I will get to them...

Future Zelda needs certain traits from Old Zelda but maintains the open-air world of New Zelda. These are Fishing with fishing rod, underwater swimming, main story elements being linear, no korok poop collectables need to have more meaning, shrine/mini dungeons need a wider variety of themes, musical instrument and so forth. . How would I change Tears to be better? No korok seeds, instead have three different collectables instead when you are done with one collectable you be allowed to craft a permanent bow or melee weapon or shield. I will call the three different collectables 1, 2, and 3, 1 is for melee weapons, 2 for shields and 3 for bows. Getting the collectables allows you to upgrade storage then once all collectables collected you sent on a final quest to get a bunch of raw materials which you use to make your new permanent weapon. . One of the main dungeons should have unlocked underwater swimming which allows you to access one of the next main dungeons and some of the shrine/mini dungeons. I know some players hate underwater swimming, but it still adds variety to themes and gameplay. Another main dungeon should unlock beetle. One of the last main dungeons should unlock an upgrade to the wing suit to allow 3 minutes of actual flying from just wearing the suit. Yet another main dungeon link should get a musical instrument which will allow him to do the music side quests and open a certain door in the final dungeon. Another main dungeon Link should get a fishing rod which is not required for anything, but Link can now fish like he did in Ocarina, Majora and Twilight. Link should still get those same five companions. . The memories should be like Ys Viii Lacrimosa of Dana and Ys Memories of Celceta being short linear sections where you play as Zelda. The Ys games are a lot like linear 3d Zelda games except you play as a group and the story is much better. . Near the end of the game Ganondorf should have his full revival and you must defend a few cities being actively attacked, this in turn helps you recruit a force to attack Ganon's castle which allows you to face him. Before this point in the game, you can use any of your excess resources to help the city fortify and the regular monster attacks. . Shrines/mini-dungeons should have a variety of different appearances, in Tears they were all greenish-tech and Breath all were bluish-tech. If shrine/mini-dungeons return with a tech theme the least they can do is use the entire rainbow of colors so in one game we have blue-tech, green-tech, yellow-tech and so forth and maybe a few having vegetation infiltration and others with rock or sand infiltration, so the shrines are not always clean. . Also it needs optional motion control sword swinging, and more enemy variety darknuts, redeads, poes, iron knuckles, rats, armos, daira, bari, like like, anubis, Skullwalltula, tektite, wallmaster, skulltula, deku baba, infinite hand.

@@keithcastillo5434 Agreed! I actually don’t disagree with anything you said really it’s just that some of the stuff isn’t as important to me. Swimming would be cool but if the game didn’t have it it’s fine with me. I’m more focused on the story and dungeons. I’d love a more linear story that takes place in the present and that Link actively contributes to. For the dungeons, I need unique theming. This is for the dungeon’s design and their bosses. I also would love if mini bosses made a return 😭 Other than that I would love for there to be clear dungeon progression. In order to move forward you need to solve this puzzle to open this door… More of a traditional style dungeon. I hope this gives a bit more insight into what I value for a Zelda game! Everything else I pretty much agree with especially the need for more enemy diversity!

I've played almost every Zelda game and enjoied them all in each perspective, nevertheless 3D games are a bit better... I still haven't completed Majora's Mask (the 3 days time bombing it's kind of unconfortable) nor even Breath of the Wild (which I think misses a good dungeon experience like previous games)... i still haven't played Tears of the Kingdom.... for the remaining of the ranking I strongly agree (giving the fact that these are the Zelda games you have played)... I'd recomend you to also try A Link to the Past (a real revolution for the Saga by its time) and Four Swords Adventures (a very enjoyable game in 2D that you can get into if you have an old gamecube or backard compatible wii... if you also have an old gamboy advance and at leat a friend with anothe gameboy advance, you could try the also enjoyable battle mode and the co-op campain)...

I actually somewhat agree with your ranking. Breath of the Wild feels like an ankle deep ocean if that makes any sense. Majora's Mask I fully agree with you is the best game in the series, though for me Skyward Sword is hard to enjoy due to those god awful controls. 10. Phantom Hourglass - Temple of the Ocean Pain 9. Spirit Tracks - the train is nice, but the dungeons are not good 8. Breath of the Wild - nice open world, but very little of substance 7. Skyrward Sword - As much as I want to like this game for it's story and characters, the awful controls make it difficult for me to enjoy this game 6. Link Between Worlds - I do not really get this game, tried it mutliple times but I don't really connect to it. 5. Tears of the Kingdom - a big upgrade over Breath of the Wild, but PLEASE no more flashback storytelling 4. Wind Waker - game is good, but some of the temples and the constant sailing are not....great 3. Ocarina of Time - It's old enough to drink at this point, but still holds up in almost every departement. Could use a full redesign to modern day though. 2. Twilight Princess - best dungeons and companion, only wish it was a bit harder 1. Majora's Mask - best game overall with the most emotional depth out of all the games

I didnt like tp. It feels really unfocused like they didn't know what they wanted to do so they just tried doing so many things at once, trying to appeal to everyone. It has one of the most boring, slow openings in a Zelda game. A modded version of the game that just starts you at the first dungeon would make tp more tolerable.The evil bug hunting stuff felt like boring filler to. The tears of light stuff could have been a lot more interesting and had you hunting and fighting enemies that were more interesting.

Wow. Someone who actually ranks BOTW as their least favourite on a public channel. I've actually had people insult me for saying i got bored of it after a couple of hours. You'd swear i just insulted their entire bloodline the way they reacted to me saying i got bored of it quickly. 😂😂😂 I wouldn't mind but i never even said the game was bad i even made a point of saying i get why most people like it, all i said was for me personally it was boring, and lacked what i played Zelda games for. Basically the same thing you said, it lacked the story. It felt like the epilogue to a story i never got to experience. I was given no reason to be invested or care about this version of Hyrule and the memories just weren't enough to make me care. I'm told i have to care but given no real reason to actually care, if that makes sense. Like people get so mad if you say you don't care for this game. Even if you're perfectly reasonable about how you word it.

As a Zelda fan first time watching a video on this channel. I do have my gripes with some of the placings. Mainly about certain games. But for critique/compliments left out in this video. - Breath of the Wild: I think the overworld does deserve to score some points here. It feels like a first proper Hyrule that has its own mysteries, folkoric/natural corners and crannies to explore in a 3d environment. Not to mention the wildlife. This is probably what people would think of if they could get transported to a game like the Legend of Zelda in terms of landscape. That being said the sequel did it better. - TotK: Basically just a better version of Breath of the Wild. But because it combines it with such unique crafting elements and at least some theming in dungeons, it deserves some credit. Exploring sky, underground and land made the game extra dimensional and free in ways that are really commendable. And the twist surrounding the memories actually did feel like it gave Zelda some purpose. (But yeah, I really hope next installment will have a more progressive narrative) - Minish Cap: I enjoyed the Kinstones, because like the masks in MM they made the world feel lived in. Like sparks of luck things happened in the world. SS tried that but kind of made it feel forced with the grattitude stones. Which seemed more like convenient random events. Also the shrinking mechanic gave the environment so much charm. Even the dungeons had fun new ways of exploration and I loved the way bosses were often incorporated organically. Also Vaati might not have a lot of depth, but the dude has style. You can't deny that. Skyward Sword: I feel like when people are talking about the story of SS. They usually refer to the lively characters. It did have some events that felt worthwhile. But somewhere I didn't feel satisfied. Mainly because this is meant to be THE origin story of Zelda and its 25th collaboration. Only for it to have tedious sidequests gathering musical notes or robot crushes, reentering spaces in ways that felt forced, or refighting a boss 3 times, everyone also thought the Red Bird would have more significance. It's literally on the Hylian Shield. So I thought it would be an upgrade to the shield you'd make in a meaningful way. Maybe that's just my expectations playing tricks on me. But it felt dissapointing when it turned out it's just an extra you earn from a boss rush fight. And it kinda did the legendary sword dirty in making it the most annoying companion known to the series. Groose felt like a Grease type schoolbully and lots of other aspects just felt 'kiddie' to me. Like huggable bokoblins. Overall it kinda ruined my expectations of this grand origin story of Hyrule.

I definitely agree with some of the points you brought up for BOTW, TOTK, and SS. The overworld in BOTW is definitely good and allows for exploration. As for skyward sword yeah how repetitive it is has always been a pet peeve for me as well. Fighting the imprisoned three times is a bit much 😅 Thank you for your comment btw! Skyward Sword's story is incredible. You literally get to see the sacred realm turn golden like "the golden land" as spoken of in A Link to the past. You see the origin of the master sword, sheik's harp, the zora's ancient de evolved species and lets not forget, you actually claim the Triforce by becoming the personification of POWER, WISDOM and COURAGE.

I think that Twilight Princess has a great balance between story and gameplay and I’m glad that people find Skyward Sword appealing. I sincerely haven’t liked it since it’s release back in the Wii era because I prefer more action and exploration than story, and also hated the tedious repetition to progress the story. But that’s the beauty of having different tastes and perspectives.

@@GamewithAndy Yeah I get that. I have watched so many films that so many people loved but they were just nothing for me. Nosferatu, Metropolis, and Brazil, for example. Or Dune, to name a more recent example. All these films, while critically acclaimed, were never for me. After all, I think we should like what we like and not like everything that is critically acclaimed just because it's critically acclaimed. I have my own problems with Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, they are far from perfect, but I still love them.

Pretty much all the 3D zelda games hold as much value to me. if i had to rank them it'd be 1. BoTW/ToTK. 2. OoT/MM/Skyward/Twilight 3. Windwaker. Windwaker is the only one that i've felt actively annoyed playing at times, mainly due to the way map and sailing is designed.

My easy top Wind waker Twilight princess Oot Tears of the kingdom Breath of the the wild Skyward sword. None the games are bad to me. It’s really what elements I prefer. Skyward sword seems in my opinion lack luster on style and design on dungeons. Nothing sticks out to me. I prefer the darker setting like twilight princess or the more shell shaded look. I like breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom out of most open world games. It’s a fun quick puzzle game but I would prefer a mix of both dungeons like twilight princess or oot. But if I like the shrines because it’s not a huge time waster. So having both would be cool and a natural progression would be nice. Really they need to blend of old school and new. I would love for them to bring back hero of twilight again considering running around as a dog and human made it feel different.
