Not sure how the Ram Zebra didn't make it on the list at all... let alone not find its way to the iconic category. The Ram Zebra introduced the world to the face-balanced mallet putter. Raymond Floyd used it to win the 1976 Masters and Nick Price used it to win the 1994 British Open. Between those two periods, the Zebra was used to win countless numbers of collegiate, amateur, mini-tour, European tour, PGA tour and other world tour events. Simon needs to bow his head in shame for overlooking this revolutionary club. ;-D

Agreed on the original Anser. When I came back to golf after a 25 year break, I bought the PLD Anser II as well. It’s a beautiful putter. Unfortunately, my putting stroke wasn’t so good after 25 years away, and ended up getting a Phantom X12. Hopefully I’ll get that stroke under control someday because the Anser II is such an elegant putter.

I wouldn't argue with any of these choices. The Spider has taken over in my golf group. The Bullseye was dominant. The 8802 was very popular. The Anser took over from there. The Two-ball the Spider. I'm probably missing a few. Personally I picked up an 8802 for $2 at a Goodwill and am still bagging it. Great distance control and control in general with little help. Only for use if you're stroke is good. It's all up to whatever works for you and what you like. Thanks for this terrific segment.

I used a ping zing 2 until this season. When I was testing putters I couldn't believe how forgiving and soft all the new putters felt. I really found it hard to pick one. Ended up getting a Ping DS72. It's like in between an anser and a mallet in size, idk what they're called. Feels soft off the face, quite forgiving but gives solid feedback. The ping pistol grip is what really won me over in the end. Insanely comfortable in my opinion

Returning to the game after many years. In the early 1990's I bought my first putter by going to a used sporting equipment store and testing every single putter they had. Ended up with a Ray Cook M1-3X mallet putter because it performed the best for me at 8 - 10 feet in the store. I did not like how a mallet putter looked but this mallet putter was the best putter for me. Paid $34 USD and learned to use the Ray Cook for long and short putts, breaking left, breaking right. Now I am testing other used putters from eBay and find that I can make all of them work for me but some are easier than others. So far, none of them can beat my Ray Cook at the "8' to the interior door threshold, bouncing over it and continuing another 7' in a straight line" test.

Always thought the idea of the Ping adjustable length was genius not just for the golfer but for the retailers as it allowed them to carry fewer SKUs. And the golfer can experiment with whatever length works best. My local golf chain always seems to have far too many 35 inch putters left, which are probably appropriate for only a small percentage of players, on the rack because nobody needs that length. Having said that I use a TM Ardmore 2 which has greatly improved my lag putting compared to my old Daytona 1 blade. Just sorry I bought the red one as the paint started chipping off right away. But I'm sticking with it.

So...that YES putter. I have an Abbie - which is a forged, milled, carbon steel version of an Anser design. It's lovely - I'd put it up against any Scotty, Odyssey ProType, Piretti, Bettinardi - the usual forged, milled, carbon steel putters. But most YES putters are inexpensive cast versions of these much better ones - the Abbie cost £250 back in 2007 - the later YES putters were selling for £35 -45 and nothing like the originals. I kind of did what Simon does - during lockdown I suddenly bought 4 £50 putters off eBay to try alongside my Bettinardi Matt Kutcher standard shaft putter. A Method, YES Abbie, TM Ardmore 1, and a Ping Zing2 was then being tried out on the carpet and on grass when we were allowed back. The YES was the one for me - so the rest, including the Betti, went to eBay again. Interesting that a £50 putter beat the £350 putter isn't it? But it has that basic high end spec no matter how old it is - Carbon Steel, Forged then Milled - a lot of pros used these putters back in the day. Now there's a thought Simon - putter metals vs how they are made. That embraces milling a putter from a carbon steel billet (solid lump), or milling from a forged lump (rough shape by forging then mill to a finish), then ditto, but this time using Stainless Steel. And where have all the BeCu, Brass, Aluminium putters gone?

Also the paint details around the face started to chip off after just 2 weeks. I don't think it's a well made putter. I have a zinger for you. My putter of choice right now is the Costco Kirkland.
