Great test as usual. I like mallets and think the 5 foot mark is the most important for strokes gained, since the bogey golfers out there will two putt from 10 and 20 feet about 80-85% of the time, while making 50% of their 5 footers.
@mh_golfer2 жыл бұрын
Same that is why I switched to a mallet putter, I was missing way too many short putts. It was also causing me to leave a lot of my longer putts a bit short because my only goal was not to leave a 4 to 6 foot putt that I was struggling with.

I just had a putter fitting today. Always thought I was going to be using a mallet putter. Then went through the testing and since I’m right eye dominate, I ended up being a perfect fit for a blade. The testing blew my mind. Ended with the Odyssey Tri Hot and sunk 12 straight with the most consistent put path.

Great video!! At last count, I have over 30 putters in my garage, not counting the ones already sold this year. Interesting how we (I) always blame the putter for putting woes and thus are constantly searching for the “right one.” Best comment ever made by my wife: “If that putter isn’t working for you, what makes you think another one will? Why don’t you change the golfer instead of the putter?!” BOOM!! Got fitted and now am rocking my putter - no one/thing to blame but the “indian” shooting the arrow now!

Tried a few putters as a kid. In my early teens I came across a heel shafted, blade putter that just fit me perfectly. It was a straight shaft too, not one of those with a weird kink where it meets the clubhead. I used it successfully for the next 20 years or so, got down to single figures handicap, played for my County, won a few comps etc etc, until I got bored/dissatisfied with the sport and stopped playing.

In between I did try the Pyramid, a Blade, but hated it and just recently donated it to my baby Brother. If I remember, I purchased a Mallet based on a MyGolfSpy article; I like it and probably would not change it no time soon although I wouldn't mind a fitting just for adjustment purposes. I went to one with a friend earlier this year in AZ; they only made a few adjustments but it definitely helped his putting this season...drats!

Love the video and the honesty with how mygolfspy does business. I have landed in the opinion that toe hang, loft and lie angle overmatch mallet vs blade. I think it’s more about neck style as opposed to head shape. My testing doesn’t involve 23k putts but I do see the same specs (toe hang, loft, offset and lie) regardless of head shape influence start line and speed more than the style of putter. I miss slant necks and heel shafted putters to the right and I miss plumbers necks to the left in both mallets and blades.

I've just purchased a squareback 2 this week. Set out to get the Tri hot double wide but I couldn't get used to how soft its insert felt on testing. I didn't even know there was a squareback with a plumbers neck until I saw it in the shop during that visit. Played one round and love it so far. It came with a golf pride snsr grip which was way too spongy so I replaced it with a pro only grip today. Hopefully this will be staying in my bag for a long time!

I think the putter I use is best described as a D-back blade, it's a Lynx Predator P-04. There were a few different models to choose from when I bought my club set and I tested them on the small indoor area the shop had and noticed I tended to roll the face open on back swing and closed on forward swing with mallets but with blades the swing was straight and true every single time.

I make a whole lot of 5 footers with it. Had it bent to as flat as I could get it before the hosel world break. Love it, feels good and have had good success with it, but technology has passed it by. What’s not taught is with a toe hang putter you need to rotate toe slightly inward with your wrists at impact especially on short putts, or you’ll miss all day long on the right side. On long putts i prefer to slightly cut the ball , I feel I can get thru it better without stubbing the putter into the ground.

Ideally the “face balance” of the putter keeps the face of the club square to the putting stroke. If one uses a straight putting stroke a mallet that balances on a finger with face level (i.e., horizontal with equal mass in toe and heel) is the best choice. If one uses a curved inside-to-square putting stroke then an Anser style putter which will hang at 40-45° is a better match to the putting stroke. What happens if putter balance does not match stroke? The heel-toe balance will try to twist the putter in the hands when swinging back and forth, potentially opening and closing face adding a variable during the stroke. Regarding inserts on the faces? Premium balls like ProV1 have a very hard layer of plastic under a very thin cover which doesn’t yield much when struck will low energy levels and will have a softer feel and different skid/roll characteristics off the face of a putter with a polymer insert. A related variable is ball balance. The balance of a ball can be tested and marked by floating it in salt water (e.g. Epsom Salts). An unbalanced ball can deviate several inched in a ten foot putt. So if testing putters one should use balls which have been tested and proven to be in balance to eliminate that variable.

I switched from the Armlock blade (the Cobra highlighted in this video, in fact) to a traditional mallet. I brought my putting stick to the corral and spent about 90 minutes putting different putters through a test suite, starting with the stick to make sure I kept it in line, then various distances, including a 25+ foot lag putt. I found that a mallet with some moderate toe hang suited me best. At a round the next day, I gained 6.8 strokes compared to my old putter. For puts 25 feet and longer, I was actually gaining strokes compared to a scratch golfer... and I'm no where near a scratch golfer.

Learned on a blade, currently using a mallet, and thinking i need something in between. Considering an extra wide blade putter. I find mallets too unweildy. I've made some gorgeous putts with my mallet putter but it feels like I'm fighting against its weight. I'm running 90+% accuracy at the 5 foot and under. My 20+ are pretty solid, mostly near misses. My biggest range of frustration is 8-12. This range usually costs me 3-4 strokes a round. My approaches and drives often leave me in that range and my mallet just doesn't work as consistently there as I'd like.

I have been going through the motions trying to find my long term putter. I have tried a whole lot. Odyssey stroke lab seven, 2 ball ten, taylormade hydroblast spider X, scotty cameron phantom x7, Scotty cameron phantom x5.5, Toulon le mans, Pxg bat attack, and to what is now in the bag Evnroll ER2B. so far I have figured out... I really love a black putter because glare on a putter distracts me like crazy. The evnroll just feels CRAZY consistent to me. I have only played a few rounds with it yet I feel pretty deadly. It just goes the distance I try to putt it. Some rounds they are dropping some they are not. I think I am confident that the ER2B is a great happy place for me to be. I liked the PXG bat attack a lot but I feel like on short strokes I had a awful tendency to get stabby and push the ball off to the right (I am a lefty) I think the toe hang on the ER2B helps me a lot in regards to that. It's super tough as a lefty trying different putters as options are scarce so when I see something I really want to try and it's in stock... I almost have to buy it. Wish me luck.
