i feel like these were still offensive when they came out, the point of the joke is that it's a character saying a stupid thing, and we're laughing at the person who is being offensive. British humour typically has the protagonist as the butt of the joke, and the US has it the other way around.
@lenaoxton88275 ай бұрын
Literally this, it’s funny because as an audience we see how terrible it is. Everyone in the comments talking about black face on Peep Show, but the joke was how uncomfortable Jeremy was, and then Nancy acting like he was the racist one in that situation. That shits hilarious.

@@rico4.700 Black face is offensive because it is mocking black people. Black face in peep show was used to mock racists. We are not looking at Jeremy in black face and going “haha black people are so stupid haha” we’re going “holy shit I can’t believe Nancy thinks that’s ok??! And I can’t believe Jeremy is so desperate for sex that he actually agreed to it!” And then Nancy calls Jeremy racist for not feeling comfortable with it. That’s funny, it’s not offensive, black people are not being mocked, RACISTS are being mocked. I want to laugh at racists and that joke is a great way to mock them. At no point are black people the butt of that joke. We can use our brains beyond “black face=offensive” and see the context of this joke is to make fun of black face as a concept.
@lenaoxton88275 ай бұрын
@@rico4.700My comment disappeared but I’ll try again. Black face is offensive because it is mocking black people in the worst way possible. That is why it’s so terrible. In the scene in Peep Show, it is being used to mock racists. As an audience we aren’t going “haha Jeremy looks so funny” in a racist way. We are going “holy shit I can’t believe Nancy asked Jeremy to do that!! And I can’t believe Jeremy is so desperate that he actually agreed to it!!” And then Nancy calls Jeremy racist for feeling uncomfortable, and starts telling him she “understands” racism really really well. The scene is mocking racists. Personally I want to laugh at racists because fuck them, and that scene in Peep Show mocks them perfectly.

Saying that the office, Inbetweeners, Ali g have aged badly then showing clips of the main characters being very transparently awful and being portrayed as such in the context of the show is just nonsense. Ali G and The Office aren’t poorly aged. Just because they say bad words it doesn’t make them offensive, they’re satire. If you’re laughing WITH the person that says the offensive thing, then it’s bad, but we’re laughing AT them, it’s a huge difference. We’re laughing AT David Brent for being out of touch and saying stupid things. If you laugh at him just being racist then yes you’re being offensive, but that’s not the point of the character. If just saying bad words = offensive then comedy is dead. And I’m not white btw…

i don't really feel as though these jokes have aged badly. The whole point is that what the people are saying is wrong. Even back then, the writers knew that these characters were in the wrong. For me 'aged badly' is when a joke was written where the person saying the racist/ offensive thing was deemed as being in the right. Or when a show contains something that is now considered offensive, such as a white person playing a native american.
