I got into Lines and ABT in the same year and decided to go to ABT. I totally wish I had chosen differently! ABT summer is overhyped, and while I did love the faculty, I feel like it’s run like a cash cow.

Michelle! I don't want to say my name here publicly on youtube but we met on the forums last year, our girls went to summer together but were in different cohorts! I hope you are well, I wasjust browsing this video because I'll call my daughter S for this convo, auditioned for RB this year, specifically trainee and got rejected this morning. It has been almost 4 weeks since she auditioned. She was told "based on the audition, we are concerned about your weight at this time. You have gained weight since last summer and it's our concern that if you continue in this manner you will not be able to perform with the company next season. It is our policy to not accept students that are underweight or overweight. Our current trainees are fit and healthy." Needless to say, we are in a bit of shock since she was asked to audition for this position. She is very upset at the moment as we decide her path. I hope you all are doing well and having better luck!!
@Michelle06702 жыл бұрын
@@JustMe-qr9jj OMG that’s terrible. I do remember you and our conversations. We had heard chatter last year during the summer intensive that they made comments to their trainees about their weight. My daughter will probably pass on the offer for trainee because she is worried about ED and this type of talk.

I really want to attend a summer intensive and Sacramento Ballet is pretty close to me but I started late a few years ago and I'm definitely not caught up to other dancers my age. It's a bit hard with age restrictions and audition requirements but I love the insight on this video :)

@nikkigrossman42443 жыл бұрын
100% agree that LINES is worth the hype!! I was an RA there in 2019 (I got paid to be there AND free class?!) and it was all around phenomenal for everyone involved. Positive atmosphere, INSPIRING teachers, great city, diversity in the students and company, TALL dancers (as a 6'1" female it was awesome to see so many tall students/company members!), and from what I could tell most all of the students actually ate a healthy amount and didn't judge others for their meal sizes. We got to take class from Alonzo and listen to him speak a lot of wisdom. I also loved that they valued the whole person, not just the dancer-- every student had to write an essay to be considered for the program, in addition to their audition. It was such a positive experience-- I'd do it again in a heartbeat!!

My daughter and I Love your videos recently subscribed! Here's sime input on my daughter's summer intensive. After getting into Abt, Boston, Ellison and Kaatsbaan (you forgot that one lol!) . She decided to go with SAB because they offered her a scholarship. Not for the big name but because she did the virtual summer last year and fell in love with the way they instruct and the teachers. Bolshoi and CPYB were on the list but audition didn't happen before having to commit to SAB. SAB will only have 12 kids in a class this year given covid restrictions. There is not a lot of hours of dancing like some intensives but they are intense classes and detailed and you must give 100% so they believe in recovery time. They truly respect the growing body of the young ones which I think is largely overlooked in some intensives where there are countless hours and folks think they are getting their money's worth but don't think about injury. At level 4 it's all pointe even at barre which steps it up. Thanks for all the input great to have a broader picture of what's out there for options next year!

i feel you so much. i however, am on the other side of the spectrum. i’m 14 yrs old, 5’2, and 125 pounds. I’m very heavy set. I started ballet when I was 11 and it was just recreational until now. In my home studio, I’m quite good but in the real ballet world, i feel like a waste of time. All i want in my heart is to be good enough for ballet. My best friend registered for some auditions and we promised when we were little to do it together. I want to, but she is very skinny, flexible and can turn like a top, while I kind of just trail behind her. I know for a fact she will get in, but I feel like if I were to audition, I would waste their time. It’s so heart-wrenching to know that something out of our control is what keeping us from this art.

I personally found college intensives to be nice in that they're smaller in size and the faculty usually is solid. However, if you're trying to go to these colleges later on, I would wait until you're closer to going to college. I went to one when I was 14 and 15 and by the time I auditioned at 18, every faculty member I'd worked with had moved on or retired. Just some food for thought!

@suzanwatson3005 Жыл бұрын
I live near Ballet Magnificat and have friends who go there and have gone there. It is a company that focuses more on contemporary dance and maybe not technique quite as much. They also have a professional company there that seems to take place over their school most of the time. I have heard good things and bad things about this program.
@elodieboerma Жыл бұрын
I haven't gone to the summer intensive, but Ballet Mag seems to have some pretty good dancers. However, they release most of their trainees after they complete the program because they take on far more dancers than they actually need. I know from a mentor who went there as a student that they have creative worship sessions after dinner (not sure how often).
