On other videos one often sees comments like "After I couldn't buy a Rolex at retail I was welcomed with open arms by my (insert almost any other brand) AD who was happy to sell me a (insert any other watch model)". This video shows why. Great info. Buy Rolex at retail if you can. With everything else buy with a solid discount from the AD, grey market discount, or lightly used discount.

This. Not to forget that every other watch brand would do the same, if they would be in the same luxurious position regarding supply and demand as Rolex.

The challenge with these analyses is that it assumes people are paying full retail nor do they pay full market price which is usually asking price. While likely for Rolex, AP, etc. they are definitely paying MSRP, it is unlikely people are getting full asking on the market price. For many of the other brands, the discount at retail could easily be larger than the negotiated amount off asking, meaning these spreads are probably more narrow than this would indicate, even if directionally accurate. While more difficult to compare apples to apples, I would like to see how well they hold value from current like new version market price to a market price after 5 years. In other words, for each model, how smarter is it to be buying current version used, vs. waiting for further depreciation and buying older models.
@pjchling8088 Жыл бұрын
Watchcharts utilises data on actual sold prices in their market valuation. What is not known is the data on discounts at AD. You just have anecdotal information in forums from buyers. 10% max for stronger brands like omega, tudor(none if they sell Rolex).

Didn't JLC increase their retail prices lately? Some are crazy high increases, idk what they're doing

They did. 40% increase for the Reverso, and similar for the Polaris. Madness.

One comment on the Black Bay 58 Blue - I see those being routinely listed for $2,650 or so on the gray market, lightly used.
@WatchCharts Жыл бұрын
That would be within the market price range we currently publish for that watch.

Great info, the retail price shown does not include sales tax so is that lost money when compared to market price? for example in florida sales tax is 7% which for a submariner means about a$700 loss. how does it work?
@WatchCharts Жыл бұрын
Sales tax in the US varies by state, so we use the manufacturer's suggested retail price as a consistent reference point for our analysis.

Regarding your interesting observation surrounding the value retention versus the initial outlay for a watch... Is it not possible to introduce some sort of coefficient that can be used to compare the percentage value retention figure against how much a watch costs to buy? Clearly to spend $6000 to achieve a 33% loss is not the same as to spend $1200 and may be of interest to prospective purchasers, all other things remaining equal.
@extremejoy Жыл бұрын
Let’s not kid ourselves; all of these watches value retention is strictly on “hype”. If people stop talking about AP, Patek & Rolex; it will go down, period! So if you don’t buy it because that you like the watch but to flip; then make sure you buy whatever watches that stays as topic of discussion with the masses…

Pretty good review! Thanks for sharing! You should do one outlining the difference between the prices of the same watches from their peak, to now. It would be interesting to see the percentages and compare.

@@WatchCharts LOL! I tried to use WatchCharts but it seems that any history past 6 months is set behind a pay wall. So I've resourcefully found the information needed using other sources. The Rolex 126610LV at the top of the market, last year, was $26,432. If someone had purchased that watch at that time, they would have experienced a negative 61% value retention. Whereas if the same buyer bought the BlancPain 5000-1110-b52a at discount or on the secondary market, BNIB, they would have not experienced a significant loss in value retention as the value overall has not changed. Watch Charts trying to pump Rolex? Try harder! My watches are losing value too quickly!

I bought my Superocean 42 from my AD at 25% discount in Jan 2023 I made 1% according to your data 😂? I am surprise the superocean is perfoming better than seamaster in value retention 🤔

When new , true you lose money in by far most cases , as it should be imho . Now , take watches of 10 or 20 y old , and check the value , since that would be the real test . I know my 15y old watch (i wont say which ) would be now at least 50% extra over to what i payed (according to the least price on chrono24 + some extra haggling , so at least 50% is a real value) . But you didn't count inflation ,true , maybe holding a stock is better . Anyway , i do not wear stocks on my wrist and neither do i feel good wearing it .

I own a few of these. Here are the values (compared to retail price) as of 07/02/2023 according to Chrono24: Rolex Sub Date 126610LN +58% Breitling Superocean heritage II AB2010121B1A1 -26% Seiko Prospex SPB097j1 -44% Don't believe I would ever buy a PROSPEX again. 💩💩

That Bathyscaphe is the most popular Fifty Fathoms reference on the secondary market, but you can look up the most popular "OG" Fifty Fathoms reference here (warning: the value retention number is not pretty): watchcharts.com/watch_model/7614-blancpain-fifty-fathoms-automatique-5015-1130-52a/overview
