Sorry for any pronunciation errors, I try my best. I listen to pronunciations before speaking, but sometimes I slip up. As someone who scripts, films and edits alone things fall through the cracks. I have speech and reading problems and I refuse to let it discourage me from making videos. I'm just doing my best and I hope I continue to improve.

A24 is such a gem of a studio, giving opportunities to rookie directors who have real talent. They have a real great identity as a company and are just great for film.

It's one of the last studios that gives a chance to "artsy" films. Pretty soon the entire scene will be owned and operated by Disney and the era for unknown directors making their passion artsy pieces will be over. Disney even talked about opening up their own theater chain which would put smaller privately owned theaters who still play the smaller movies out of business. It's truly tragic, It's been a huge issue for a few years now.

@Ciguaphyria X plus A24 doesn't make most of their movies. They're primarily just the U.S. distributor. Most of the movies in their catalogue they had zero to do with the production (still love their catalogue tho).

I'm glad there are people who like A24. But for me, it's a big keep away sign. I'd rather watch artless trash like Maniac Cop than The Lighthouse. Keep horror trashy and low budget and hungry. A24 is like adding symphonic instrumentation and production value to raw black metal albums.

It Comes at Night is honestly my favorite horror film of all time. The amount of tension Shults manages to build throughout is outstanding. I also think it has one of the best / bleakest endings out of any horror film. He managed to create an ending that was both surprising and completely inevitable. I love that Shults refuses to reveal exactly what “It” is, instead implying that humans are the real monsters.

Most definitely! A24 has made a few bombs, but inversely, a few that are worth a re-watch over and over again! Obviously, "Hereditary", which definitely deserves be high up because it was REALLY successful on a budget of $10 million with returning just over 8× at $80.2 million and pretty much made Toni Collette a scream queen!

Totally agree. A24 supports so many creative minds and I’m here for it, we get to see some stories play out that we otherwise might not. Sometimes tho, it feels like in an attempt to find a story that’s “unique” and “different”, like most of their films, they find some people that cross the line into “wtf actually is this” territory.

BHENgames the intro with the parents and sister was so tragically horrifying that it actually scared me of how abrupt and expertly shot it was. However the rest of the movie after that felt like something completely different and I didn’t understand some of the intricacies of it, which distracted me from the style of horror. Certain things dragged on for too long with no purpose (I’m mostly pointing out that fucking sex ritual). But other than that it’s a beautiful piece of cinema and I would understand that the more you watch it, the more you appreciate it. I still need to watch a lot of A24 movies, but so far, The Lighthouse, Hereditary, and Uncut Gems are my favourites.

*spoilers* I think It Comes at Night is underrated. The advertising completely misled people, for sure, and that's unfortunate. But taken less as a direct horror film, and more as an exploration of what fear does to the mind in times of crisis, I think it's pretty great. You witness in real time the transformation of people as they start as rivals, become family, and then end up as enemies, all because of a virus, something that (like fear) can't be seen but has the power to destroy. I also appreciate that it asks a pretty simple though profound question. Is death the worst fate possible? Or is it worse to lose ones humanity and live with the consequences? I've always enjoyed the film. Though, granted, I may be seeing it in a different light at the moment due to what is happening in the world at large. Great list, well spoken. I definitely need to see High Life.

Of the 8 that I’ve seen, here is my ranking. 1. Hereditary- a family tragedy turned horror. Wow. Love this film. Has some genuinely terrifying scenes. 2. The Lighthouse- acting is wonderful, so metaphorical, a wonderful display of a descent into madness 3. The Witch- beautiful film, intense, creepy and very well made. 4. Tusk- funny, strange, disturbing, dumb, emotional, and disgusting makes this a fun watch 5. Green Room- very intense with some great performances, good gore as well 6. Midsommar- over the top weird at times, drawn out, but has some memorable scenes, incredible acting 7. The Killing of a sacred deer- acting felt off, simply wasn’t entertaining enough, but disturbing 8. The Hole in the Ground- first two thirds were great, last third was disappointing, good performances

Tusk is so underrated. It definitely has its flaws, but it's memorability and originality transcends even some of the most iconic horror films. It's fully committed to both horror and comedy, which is rare. I would have switched your number one and your number two, but I'm glad your number one is getting the praise it deserves. That film knew the risks it was taking and embraced them. Whether anyone fully figures it out or not, it will always be a powerful experience. So many of my favorite horror movies are A24 films! Climax, The lighthouse, The Witch, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, and the ever unpopular Tusk lol. But honestly some of the best recent horror movies IMO. Good video 💜

*_Finally,_* someone else who enjoyed _Tusk_ as much as i did. I guess a lot of people just sort of _"grew out"_ of Kevin Smith's sense of humor, & he's got such a _skewed_ (pun intended) perception of reality that it just feels right, & translates very well to horror, imo. Whenever i mention liking _Tusk,_ however, i almost *always* get a confused look from others, almost as if liking it automatically means there's something wrong w/me... They're mostly right in sensing that something's wrong w/me, but i don't think this film necessarily warrants that kind of reaction.

surprised by your number 1 pick! though I agree it is a wonderful film. here's what my list would be, ranked from worst to best, minus hole in the ground, in fabric, the monster and life after Beth bc I haven't seen those ones :< 12. Climax 11. Tusk 10. High Life 9. Hereditary (I rlly want to give it a second try though bc everyone seem to rlly love it but I didn't really on my first viewing!) 8. Under the Skin 7. It Comes at Night 6. The Blackcoat's Daughter (weirdly enough this is the scariest film for me out of this whole list lol. it's so goddamn creepy) 5. The Witch 4. The Killling of a Sacred Deer 3. The Lighthouse 2. Green Room (I'm not sure why but boy do I love this one) 1. Midsommar. It took me a while to actually watch it since I didn't like Hereditary but I was completely floored by this film. hands down one of the best horror of all time for me!!!

Ooh you definitely need to rewatch Hereditary. I really didn't get the hype on first watch, but then I rewatched it when my partner wanted to see it and it's now one of my favorites; I feel like I caught so many more details the second time around which made it much more enjoyable, since the first time I was busy just trying to keep the plot straight in my head.

My list (skipping the many I still haven't gotten around to. (How have I not seen Climax yet? argh)) is... 9. High Life (2018) 8. Midsommar (2019) 7. The Monster (2016) 6. The Witch (2015) 5. The Lighthouse (2019) 4. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) 3. It Comes at Night (2017) 2. Hereditary (2018) 1. Under the Skin (2013) The 5 that I ranked higher are all SO GOOD for me. When I was writing this down I couldn't believe The Lighthouse and The Killing Of A Sacred Deer wouldn't be in the top3, but 3. It Comes At Night is... everything... I find it one of the creepiest films with one of the best atmospheres ever. 2. [copy and paste all Emma said about Hereditary, I agree with everything.] 1. Under The Skin is one of the films I've watched in theaters the most in my life. I just can't get enough of it. I've recently started listening to the soundtrack too, and it's also so perfect. Everything about Under The Skin is perfect for me. So yes, here we are.

My least favourite is definitely Tusk🙈 BUT I do think it's because I really really don't like body horror. Its the one horror genre that gives me nightmares. Its why I avoid Hostel esk movies and human centipede etc. It just grosses me out and is too much to deal with mentally. I didn't like lighthouse as a film but can appreciate it as art. I haven't seen killing of a sacred dear. Midsommar is my number 1 A24. My husband and I just sat in the cinema for 10 minutes afterwards in awe of what we just watched. Incredible list I have some movies to watch as there was a few I hadn't heard of

I really like all these movies and they're super hard to rank, but of the ones I've seen, here's my ranking (The top 3 and bottom 2 were pretty easy but the middle four are super loose); 1. The Witch (2015) (9.5/10) 2. The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015) (9/10) 3. Hereditary (2018) (8.5/10) 4. It Comes at Night (2017) (8.5/10) 5. Under the Skin (2013) (8/10) 6. Midsommar (2019) (8/10) 7. I liked Tusk as well but I think the context I watched it in was one of the main reasons. I had never even heard of it or seen a trailer, but I saw it for free on Amazon prime one night so I decided to watch it. The description said something about an arrogant man becoming a walrus, and mentioned that it was directed by Kevin Smith. So I legit thought that it was going to be goofy Kevin Smith style comedy about a man who gets a walrus spell/curse put on him and has a wacky adventure trying to figure out how to become human again and has to learn not to be a jerk (e.g. The Emperor's New Groove). It was so extremely different than what I imagined it was going to be, and I loved it a lot for that reason alone.

Of what I've seen: 1. The Lighthouse. One of my favorite films of all time. 2. The Witch. Unbelievable period accuracy- love the language especially. 3.Hereditary. Far and away the most disturbing horror movie I've ever seen. I almost turned it off about halfway through just because of how unnerved I was. 4. Midsommar. Brilliant visual design and well-acted, just not particularly engaging/frightening. 5.Killing of a Savred Deer. Couldnt even finish it- characters were completely unlikable, attempt at causing dread didnt work for me, wanted to punch the antagonist any time he came on screen.

Totally respect your placement on It Comes At Night, and I understand where you’re coming from with the misleading trailer. I went in blind when I saw it and it ended up becoming one of my favorite psychological horrors ever made and it really parallels the global pandemic we all are experiencing, we all know about what’s going on but we don’t at the same time and that’s truly what makes it terrifying. Please give it a rewatch if you haven’t already

The Monster - I remember seeing this one and I totally agree that it feels like it would've been better as a short! High Life - I DNF'ed it. I don't remember how far into the movie I got but eventually I quit because I found it to be way too full of itself and not really having enough to say. It Comes At Night - so, with this one I actually went into it blind. The only thing I knew about it was that everybody hated it. I loved it so much. I don't know where to catagorize it and I can't really call it a movie that changed my life, but I really appreciated the experience and the final conclusion was really haunting and had been building the whole time and boy it was uncomfortable. Life After Beth - haven't watched it yet, but am considering it The Hole in the Ground - I watched it. I have no memory or anything that happens in this film other than that I was very bored and uninvested the whole time - and there were a few interesting and cool cinematography choices. The Black Coat's Daughter - I have been meaning to rewatch this one because the first time I saw it I recognized that this was a good quality film, but I just didn't connect with it at all. Wanna give it another chance someday. Green Room - LOVE IT! That hand behind the door scene was one of the most horrific things I've ever seen. Dear god. I loved how the main character's stupidity was very relatable and you were frustrated but you also could relate to that type of panicked idiotic problem solving. In Fabric - haven't seen this one! I'm intrigued! The Vvitch - feel about it in the same way I feel about The Black Coat's Daughter. I want to watch it again. The Lighthouse - it NUTS! Probably the best lovecraftian horror film since In The Mouth Of Madness! :D Under the Skin - was a hypnotic watch. Absolutely loved it. Tusk - haven't seen it, probably never will haha xD I love that you love it, though! Good for you, man! Climax - Made me an instant fan of Gaspar Noe. I have seen almost all his films after I saw this one. I love love loooove this one! Midsommar - Didn't really care for this one, I have to admit, but I will support Ari Aster everytime he releases a new movie. Hereditary - no words needed. One of the best horror movies ever made. Love it so so so much and I forgive the cult-aspect which in my opinion dragged it down a little bit. The Killing of a Sacred Deer - again, The Black Coat's Daughter and The Vvitch join the club with this one when it comes to movies I know are expertly crafted but were off putting and I probably need to watch them a few more times to be able to make up my mind about them. Great list, Emma! As always, your opinions are fun to listen to and lists are always fun! Go you! :D
