As a Tolkien fan I'm happy that, in this very personal list of yours, you've still managed to fit the Professor's work in the top tier; I think that one of the main qualities of his is his skill in writing timeless, universal tomes, although for me he's my personal favourite undisputedly. Anyway, S-tier tier list: at once personal and academic.

I really like your perspective on DNF! I try to finish every book I read just in case the story picks up later on but truthfully, most books that I don't enjoy in the beginning just end up being a drag regardless 😅 It's cool that you don't put pressure on yourself for those kind of things, maybe it's something I can practice in the new year as well!

I was so sad to see you put Bear and the Nightingale in the three star category! The entire series quickly became one of my absolute favorite series of all time after my sister gave the first book to me on my birthday. Russian folklore has been very meaningful to me since I was a child. Curious to see if you'll plan on reading the other two in the series, as the story really begins to take off on her journey. For me, they continue to get better and better with each one. I thought that the character development and world building were great. ❤️

Hi, would you consider reading "Ascendance of a Bookworm"? They're very short, but there's already 16 of them translated (with 17 about to be released). I'll try a short sell here: As the title implies, the main character is a bookworm which allows her to ascend relatively quickly in society. This is one of those dreaded Isekai (in another world) japanese light novels. That is, in the first chapter she dies and is reincarnated into another world only to find that due to her new social status there are no books available which brings her to the brink of despair so she vows to rectify that situation by using her old world knowledge to go about and making books on her own. What particularly strikes me as great about the series is the world building and the complete otherness of their political system and interactions between the common people and the nobility.

Hey Christy! I was curious to see if you have any tips on how to read so much while also being productive at your job and finding the time to have other hobbies as well (i.e., you mention videogames and watching series). I managed to read 27 books this year, but only because I had so much free time for the first half of 2021...I'd love to keep it up and even increase that number :) Also, have you read the Amber in the Ashes series? I just finished it and I thought it was incredible, you might like it!

I use Goodreads to track my reading. Whenever I click finished it asks for a rating, and most of the time I click 'no rating' because I'm still processing, and I could probably talk about my thoughts about the book, but not a rating per se. I think most of the books I rate end up being 5 stars because I'm very certain it's 5-stars as soon as I finish it. However, I definitely look at the ratings (more so, the comments) on books before I read them! I do enjoy these tier-rank videos.

I think one of the things that made it so suspenseful for me was that I KNEW what would happen to Achilles. So I can understand that a little more if you aren't familiar with the myth--but there were other things I didn't remember, and that's what made it so devastating 😭💛

I DNF'd Sapiens because he weirdly straw manned "greenies" halfway through the book and it annoyed me. Commenting on the migration of humans to Australia/NZ and the wiping out of mega fauna he said "don't believe greenies when they say we used to be in harmony with animals." No one has ever said that, are you a tabloid rag or are you an academic analysis, pick a lane.

@genghisgalahad84652 жыл бұрын
Should you even rank a DNF? I get stating reasons for not finishing it, but wouldn’t it unfair though to rank it if it wasn’t finished being read. (Passive voice, I know) it should merit a DQ to the reviewer, kinda like a social contract that if a reading has been terminated, it can’t be reviewed much less listed? DNF’s aren’t usually a thing to check off a list and accumulate, are they? To me, even if you read all of it except the final chapter of main story, not epilogue, then I’m of a mind to say you didn’t give the book a fair shot and the book doesn’t need to be on your list of having read some of it. Maybe a separate list of tried to read, but could not finish? Limbo list. Did t realize there was actually a thing of listing DNF’s. I think it’s more fair to the author to not be listed or enumerated as DNF ALONG with those books that were read. It’s like say an actor reading 20 scripts before deciding and choosing which say 2-3 projects to work on and be credited for performing in is my best analogy half baked hot take from the hip. And it lessens the burden of the reader of having to deal with after the fact. Readers shouldn’t be obligated to explain at length or formally why they didn’t finish a book. Minimum is eh. and that leaves both parties, especially the author, none the wiser. If it was read entirely, mentions and maybe even rants/negative reviews are more valid? No points, no credit, I don’t think, should be given for incomplete/unfinished reads.
@christy-anne-jones2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's fair to give a book I didn't finish a definitive rating. But that's why there's a DNF category of its own 😊

I've read quite a few books on that list. Saga Land is one of the books I'm currently reading. After already mentioning a contest where the loser was to hurl themselves off a cliff, it started talking about chess, and got to this bit: “Directly to the north of Iceland is a dot of an island called Grimsey, the northernmost part of Icelandic territory. With a tiny population of eighty-six, the island is sustained almost entirely by fishing, tourism and its centuries-old obsession with chess. In the Middle Ages it was said the people of Grimsey took their chess so seriously that losers were sometimes required to hurl themselves off a cliff.” I thought, no wonder their population was so small lol (I found it hilarious). I told a friend about it and said, let's promise to never take our backgammon that seriously (we play backgammon most times we hang out).
