Ranking Every Chapter In Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door

One of if not my favorite chapter in the game is chapter 4. The main reason being the story especially in the second half. Doopliss is easily one of my favorite villains and while his bosses are easy the concept is perfect. Fighting your own partners is a brilliant idea of you ask me. Vivian is also a main reason. She is in my opinion the best partner and one of the best paper mario characters in general. I also dont mind the backtracking but i understand why many people dislike it

I love how every ranking has 2 things in common, Chapter 6 is either in the top 2 or bottom 2 placements. And chapter 3 is number 1

I love Chapter 6 for similar reasons to why I like Chapter 7 in PM64. Both have you helping a penguin man solve a wacky mystery.

Currently playing the remaster and chapter 3 is STILL my fav level ❤ I have so many good memories of giving all the characters their own unique voices together with my twin sister when we played this as kids😂 Im 32 now and read all of the dialog with the same voices in my head

Two things of note there is the warp pipe room which will make the general white quest so much faster if it unlocks at the start of the chapter. If it does not then it’s still way better because you will just have to backtrack to the pipe room and quickly go to all the areas before backtracking to chapter 7 again. I think the pipes do open up at the start of the chapter but unsure. Also a spring was added during the yoshi and invisible block section between flavio and bobbery so that will make it faster. Also there is apparently a new warp pipe in creepy steeple which could unlock a pipe to twilight town if that is true and it unlocks after the first trip then that pretty much removes the backtracking from chapter 4 and makes it go from worst 3 to top 2.

My ranking 1.chapter 4:this is the best chapter cause doopliss is my favorite boss and it's just full of mysteries and challenges as you have to conquer a ghost creature who takes your name and body and all your partners and your only left with Vivian and the fight is more fun when you beat every partner you had to teach them a lesson karma is a bitch to them 2.chapter 3:it's just fun to fight against all those enemies and it's the best way to get more exp and level up quickly and you get kid Yoshi my fav partner 3.chapter 2: I like the boss against the shadow sirens and I'll admit there is so annoying stuff in the tree but it gives you the adrenaline that you need to pass the game and for my first time I think this was the hardest chapter for me NGL 4.chapter 5:it's kind of cliched but the story is good but I'll admit the chapter now in days is my hardest chapter I always end up with like 2 health in the end after Cortez it's the hardest chapter ill say imo 5.chapter 1: I mean honestly it's no different then the OG paper Mario chapter one but I liked it better then the other ones ranked below 6.chapter 6:I mean it's so weird I hated that chapter and my screen would change color and I thought I broke the game and that what's supposed to happen anyways the story and gameplay was boring and confusing 7.chapter 8:the challenges are too hard I had to look up how to complete them I wish they were more clear and I had to buy like 5 life shrooms to stay alive 8.chapter 7:any og player of ttyd knows that this chapter takes forever to complete it took me 3 hours to complete that chapter I swear if I knew I had to backtrack to like ten different places I wouldn't have played further then that chapter but I did it anyways when I get the remake I hope it takes less time hopefully That's my ranking hope you like remember it's an opinion so no judging

You also can’t go leave Twilight Town in Chapter 4 until Mario gets his clothes back by defeating Doopliss. (You mentioned that Chapter 5 is the only chapter where you can’t leave the chapter.)

I always enjoyed General White personally I enjoy the grind that eventually works. Found it funny. I also enjoy the lab aesthetic. But I agree 7 being lower

My top 3 picks are exactly the same as yours! To me, those 3 were easy to place, but the other 5 chapters were all pretty interchangeable Chapter 3 Chapter 6 Chapter 5 Chapter 4 Chapter 1 Chapter 8 Chapter 7 Chapter 2 (basically I love the midgame lol)

From worst to best, imo: 6, 2, 7, 1, 4, 8, 3, 5. Even my least favorite chapter was still solid imo. Back tracking has no effect on my ranking. It actually didn’t bother me as much as it did for others.

I honestly like every chapter for one reason or another. It was hard to put any one of them as “worse.” On my first playthrough chapter 6 was a surprise, for the better, but on repeat playthroughs, it gets a little boring. It’s like filler you would see in anime. That’s how I see it. It has been years though. My opinion on any of these chapters might change for the remake. Can’t wait! Only a few more days!

As someone who played the remake. My ranking is the following: In last place Chapter 6: HUGE lack of fighting so the chapter was rather a slog... I didnt even enjoy the story much either. But the music from the Gc version is so damn good. Up next is Chapter 7: and yeah same issues as you mentioned. The backtracking was fixed thanks to a central warp pipe hub. But its not fun. The x naut base wasnt intresting enough either and the moon enemies suck Next is the prolouge (screw you im counting it): Nothing intresting. And WAYY to many tutorials. Next up Chapter 2 like you said is fun before the tree. After that its boring. 5th place goes to chapter 8: The ultimate test. And I dislike it. For the final place in the game it is such a slog to go through... BUT the spectacle added to the remake was really cool 4th place is chapter 5: This chapter is fun but Flavio kills it for me 3rd place is chapter 1: not much to say. But Koops' story and the Petal meadows (gc) track is great 2nd place is Chapter 3: Im a sucker for the combat so this is fun. And 1st place is Chapter 4: Backtracking IS a major issue but Vivian, the story, and the remakes music make up for it HEAVILY. It was the chapter i wanted to play the most.

Really excited for the remake. If I had to rank the chapters with 1 the best and 8 the worst, my order would be... 1. Chapter 4 I think I like this one the most simply because it's when Vivian joins. 2. Chapter 3 I just really like the fighting tournament. 3. Chapter 6 I'm a sucker for a mystery on a train. 4. Chapter 8 I don't hate this one but, I don't really love it either. 5. Chapter 1 I love the castle setting with a decent first boss. 6. Chapter 7 I love the moon setting but, the slowdown while walking is pretty bad. 7. Chapter 2 I love the look of the woods but, I find the story kind of dull here. 8. Chapter 6 I'm just not really into this chapter, I don't know why but, the only redeemer for me is Whacka. I don't really hate any of the chapters, so it was a little hard raking them.

Its only major problem is the repetitive twilight trail, it's blatant padding. If I were to change it, I would have added a warp pipe after the second time through.
