It's really interesting seeing you put my favorite game in the series (FE11) really low and having legitimately good criticisms for it. Personal tier lists of Fire Emblem games are always a joy to see because Fire Emblem is a rare series where every game is so drastically different at a fundamental level that any game can be at any spot of the tier list based on personal tastes. The fact that unironic Gaiden and/or Rev stans exist is a beautiful thing.

Love the video! I wrote an overlong comment on FE4! One particular point of interest for me is that you say about Thracia 776 that "unlike Genealogy, it is significantly more successful at telling its story through gameplay." While I agree that Thracia does a great job at that, I'm interested in what ways you think Genealogy is unsuccessful in telling its story through gameplay. Is it just that every map is a seize map? Because for me, the story-gameplay integration of Genealogy is a large part of why I enjoy that game as much as I do. Some examples: +Inheritance is an important theme in Genealogy. Seliph is not only carrying on Sigurd's legacy, but also inheriting the loyalty and feelings other people had towards his father. Even beyond that, as the rightful heir to the Grandbell Empire, he inherits the hopes of the general populace for liberation from the Loptyr Empire. Julius like-wise inherits the resentment the Lopt sect has harbored for centuries due to their persecution. Most major characters, friend and foe, (especially ones with holy blood) can be be said to be inheriting something. So it's really cool how inheritance is a major gameplay mechanic. The fact that every item is a unique, trackable item that you can go "this is the Silver Sword that Sigurd got from Arvis, who passed it down to Seliph" means that every item in the game becomes a symbol of the deeper things the characters have also inherited. It's not perfect -- the fact that the way you transfer items between characters is a pawn shop always felt dissonant to me -- a character giving an item to another character could also be said to be a form of inheritance, but selling it not so much. But overall, I think it works really well. +Related to the above, the way holy blood can be seen on the stat screen, the way it has actual impact, and the power of the holy weapons being in accordance with the story is neat. +Thracia has escape and defend maps that create situations that feel desperate for Leif and fit the narrative well, but I honestly think every chapter being seize fits well for the stories of Sigurd and Seliph. In Sigurd's case, the fact that Sigurd has never lost a battle and yet still ends the way he does adds to the tragedy. I'm not super familiar with classical tragedy, but to me Sigurd feels like a classic tragic hero -- near invincible, but with a critical weakness. Because for all his strength, Sigurd is still beholden to the country he is a lord of, and the conflict that sparks the events of gen 1 is rooted in deep political turmoil and centuries-old prejudices, which are far bigger than any one man. It's true that Sigurd's actions lead to his downfall, but I think criticizing Sigurd for that is missing the point a little bit. There are all sorts of things Sigurd could have done differently, but they all would have meant sacrificing something. Anyone in Sigurd's position was likely doomed in some way or another. In Seliph's case, he's kind of a destined liberator, so seize maps make sense. His story is all about the catharsis of fixing all the **** that went wrong at the end of Gen 1. Most of the drama that occurs in Seliph's story is less about Seliph himself encountering hardship, but in humanizing the people he's fighting against and fighting for, understanding what caused the conflict in the first place (where Sigurd was totally oblivious). +Enemies in the prologue are generally scattered, representing a relatively disorganized raiding party. In Chapter 1, they're a bit more organized, but not entirely so. These kinds of trends are continued throughout the game, with the positioning of the enemies telling you something about the armies you are fighting. I know a lot of people hate the "Kaga rectangles," (for some good reasons) but there is a certain amount of logic to them -- blobs of enemies are generally more difficult to fight than scattered enemies (especially if they are varied enemy types), and the game uses more organized formations for scarier, more competent foes. Also, as a side-note, I absolutely love how every enemy army has it's own musical theme to give it its own character. +I don't have time to go too in depth into specific chapter details, but I do want to call out Eldigan saving your home castle in Chapter 1 as being pretty brilliant, imo. It organically establishes so many different things. Eltshan is Sigurd's bro, and having him help out there makes him feel like the player's bro too. It also clearly establishes how much more powerful Eldigan's Cross Knights are compared to the armies of the other lords of Augustria, which is reflected in the gameplay later, as Eldigan is the last of the Augustrian lords you take on in chapters 2-3 and probably the most challenging one gameplay wise (especially if you don't talk to him with Lachesis). I also like how Eldigan mirrors Sigurd in that you never see him lose in an actual battle (unless the player actually kills him but that's really difficult to do), but is instead undone by the political corruption in his country and his own actions in response to that corruption. I guess while I'm defending Genealogy, I will also mention that doing an arena-less run is probably easier than you think. Losing the exp hurts, but the gold isn't nearly as much of an issue as you'd expect. Every character actually gets a few thousand gold after each chapter (I think it's 1000 per non-destroyed castle). Gold-wise, I actually think playing arena-less makes the game a lot better, because with the arena you get absolutely insane amounts of gold. It means using cheaper swords sometimes to save money can actually be worth it, and you have to put some more thought into whether you want to transfer items. I think a run where you are allowed to pick, say, 2 characters each chapter to arena with is a nice middle ground that probably provides the best experience for most players -- you get a little bit of nice gold and exp, without bogging yourself down forever with arena battles.

Obviously can’t respond to the whole comment (I really need to replay FE4 while deep diving the story, it’s been a couple years), I do want to say that I agree with the comments about Sigurd as a character. Sometimes, people will mix up a character making mistakes with a character being bad (I think it’s the same wrong critique of Celica and Eirika: i.e: “I wouldn’t have made that decision, so it ruins the character”). Sigurd definitely fits the mold of a tragic character. In classical tragedy, there are three features 1.) Hero of nobility, royalty, or high military rank 2.) Hamartia: A tragic flaw that leads to the downfall 3.) Catharsis: the moment that the emotions are released, the death of the tragic hero. The difference between Greek and Shakespearean tragedy is that Greek tragedy is preordained or chosen by the gods while Shakespearean tragedies have characters that cause their own downfall through their actions. Sigurd lies in the latter camp, and I think that makes him one of the most interesting lords in the series to play. A failing campaign is really fascinating since there’s no way out. A game over and beating part 1 are both Sigurd losing, often through his own decisions. Very cool character who gets too much hate

On the topic of Birthright's story I will never get over the fact that it's painted as the moral high ground of the Fates routes but it is the one where Corrin kills the absolute most people with the least regret. It also does its absolute best to paint the people of Nohr as pure evil which funnily enough Conquest doesn't do to the Hoshidans

Conquest objectives- fight, no need to kill everyone Birthright objectives- rout the enemy [kill every last one of them!] What would've made Fates more interesting is if Corrin had the opposite feelings in each, OR, and this is a bold ask of an Rpg, make the feelings a player choice. Invading countries is kind of only bad, but feeling regret would enhance Birthright. And in Conquest, just let Corrin be corrupted. Make a statement about good intentions having bad outcomes. Or have real choices...

So, my thing with Birthright is I really like the aesthetic above all else. It was the first (and really only) game to break out of the medieval European setting, and the game changes around that. Some aspects remain similar like certain Classes: Samurai being Myrmidons, Ninja being Thief/Assassin, and I think those are welcome to make the game feel familiar in a different setting. However, the game changes other aspects to fit the theme. Scrolls are fundamentally different from traditional spells, naginatas lack the 1-2 range that Javelins have, the introduction of debuffing through shuriken weapons, etc. Of course, being Japan, they were able to reference their history and make some thoughtful designs for characters, their classes, and the overall general feel of Hoshido. Sure, the game's easy, but so are Sacred Stones and Path of Radiance, and people tend to overlook those flaws (not saying I dislike either of those titles). When a game tends to be easier, I feel like there's more freedom for the player to do what they want, without having to feel this dread of playing sub-optimally or the game feeling artificially difficult.

Can we just go back to a time when units were one class? Maps feel like they have a much deeper connection to your units when your units are limited to a certain spread of each class. Like cool, you got a flier, but the map both punishes and insensitives you to use that flier
@emils1615
@emils1615 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, for the developers is very difficult to create a good map when you can have basically any combination of class. that's also the reason why I think that early game maps are more fun because the developers new exactly what units you have and what they can do and they can build a map around those things. In three houses and other similar game maps count nothing, the difficult is just based on enemy stats

I agree with how much Sacred Stones' story elevates the game, even if it's not the most complex story on the face of it, but once you get into the smaller details of how the cast relates to each other it gets a surprising amount of depth. You touched on the relationship between Eirika and Lyon, but I actually think Lyon's relationship with Ephraim in his route to be more interesting, because Eirika!Lyon can at least hide behind the Demon King being the one really in control, the twins in Ephraim's route have to deal with the fact that, no, their good friend really made all these awful choices (mostly) of his own volition, each making sense of a sort at the time but adding up to create something horrific. Of all particular scenes in all these games I think the battle dialogue between Lyon and Ephraim has stuck with me more than anything else. Lyon (with an assist from the DK, of course) has fooled himself into thinking he's only done what he could, but Ephraim sees right through it and says that this was never what he was meant to do. Lyon was so enamored with a specific vision of leadership that he never realized his own qualities were just as valuable, causing him to lose sight of everything. I really love that arc.

I'm not just saying this because I'm a Gaiden fanboy (well maybe I am), but I honestly believe that it would only take a couple tweaks to make people enjoy it a lot more. If people really like Echoes that much (and don't get me wrong, so do I), they have to realize that they should like the original for a number of the same reasons. I think if animations were sped up, or if they could be skipped, and if you could show ally and enemy ranges, basically if it was a SNES game instead of a NES game, people would be totally on board, and it would be much higher on the ranking. It's really fascinating to me how large the gap is between the two on this list and on the fan ranking, and I don't think it would really take much to close the gap.

I would say that what Birthright allows is more of a functional sandbox in comparison to revelations. All the characters are usable as well as having most of the crew join you very early, so you dont get characters like revelations Effie , Nyx, Odin and Azama, that are completely useless. The game does have a pretty nasty difficulty spike, hovewer you do get a lot of heavy hiters, while also allowing to make some weird builds that are not worth it in Rev. This is coming from someone whose first game was Birthright, so there is certainly bias here, but I would still argue that just because Its fairly easy, it doesnt mean that Its all bad. One of my arguments would be comparing rev characters to how they appear in BR and CQ. A lot of them are balanced terribly so you wont get the same sandbox expierience as in 3H, Awakening (normal and hard), Birthright, Conquest and even Sacred stones and villigers in Echoes. I understand your criticisim, but I would still recommend to try and give it a second chance.

I’d honestly say DS Shadow Dragon is far better than it’s sometimes given credit for. Even on Hard 5 difficulty, warping is broken but far from a necessity as I’ve managed to beat nearly the entire game without ever using Warp(asides from Chapter 10). Ironically I just ended up playing somewhat similarly to the first 3 chapters and actually got rewarded for just grinding alot, which led to some fun results like Palla ending up with 25 Def and just essentially tanking even forged brave enemies during Endgame (insane foreshadowing for FE12 btw). I’ve also heard H5 Shadow Dragon being notoriously difficult, but I feel like it’s one of if not the most overrated difficulties. The game actually allows for a ton of freedom, with Excelblem even doing very degenerate strats and getting rewarded for killing off units. That’s what makes Shadow Dragon so unique as it can be challenging yet flexible in terms of strategy. I also don’t think Shadow Dragon should be looked down at for its simplicity imo because it’s a perfect example of “less is more”, and I would argue this game’s flaws aren’t so significant and can very much be seen as assets instead. Even visually, the game still has that archaic appeal I can appreciate with the way the character sprites and animations are designed.

I can think of more than a couple maps with some sense of urgency to them: Battle Before Dawn as Bopper noted Dragon's Gate to recruit Legault and get the Member Card Victory or Death has villages and Renault Imprisoner of Magic on Hector Mode to stop Kishuna from leaving early False Friends to stop Erk from killing himself and getting Priscilla's village Whereabouts Unknown to stop Raven and the green units from killing themselves Kinship's Bond, as a Defend Map, has incentives (chests, recruiting Heath and Rath) to discourage players from hunkering down and Ending Turn the whole time I get that not every map in the game is a super well-designed, fun as hell, strategic challenge, but I don't think it's fair to refer to them as poor map design. Maybe others have different ideas on what consists of good map design?

In my own experience, Binding Blade punished me VERY hard for going slow. I'd say its one of the more strict FE games when it comes to side-objectives and promotion items, and turtling is a great way to miss out on those things. The enemy stats also keep up with the player much better than FE7 or 8, so allowing multiple enemies to target a single one of your units is usually a bad idea unless its one of the few truly exceptional units like Miledy or Percival. Its MUCH more player-phase focused than the other gba titles. I wouldn't be the FE player I am today without the lessons FE6 beat into me after years of FE7 as a kid. Def can't disagree on Roy and Merlinus being boring, or support grinding being a pain though.

What you said about Binding Blade is actually really really interesting. It IS the point in time where they talk about war between humans and dragons, and despite being super integral to the overall lore, Binding Blade is THE point where they could've talked about it and they actually do not do anything about it whatsoever. Like, I argue Idunn should've been a focus, it could be a focus of how dragons go wild after a wild or that she was being controlled. SOMETHING. That re-write idea would've really made it interesting to watch what was happening on screen. (But I mean............. Those Hit rates though.............. It's unsalvageable. Cuz even if you fix that, you have everything else on that game 🤣)

resisting the urge to post All My Thoughts, On All The Games placements i agree with most FE4: what you said about the maps being a missed opportunity, except i dislike chapter 7 (swap it with the beginning of chapter 3, which has enemies from multiple directions and actual castle defense. the castle defense portion being unexplored in this game beyond the occasional gotcha is a shame). also lowkey the story is kinda bad in FE4 but it doesn't get Plinketted like the modern games cuz it's less popular, and its epic scale and "serious tone" ('90s anime instead of modern anime) distract from its problems. agree with the D tier placement, but then you put it in C tier for symmetry's sake so you're wrong and bad now. Shadow Dragon: Link Did Nothing Wrong Radiant Dawn: easy A, although your part 4 is my part 2 Awakening: B+ for identical reasons. they really needed harsher exp cuts to keep your units more in check... among other things Echoes: my fav, even tho i'm not huge on story or presentation. i play this game for the gameplay and like all the maps lol. placements i differ from most Fe1&2: should be in a special Unplayable tier below F for Fan Ranking tier. like seeing an 1800s cup-and-ball in a museum and being like "damn... people thought this was a toy," these games don't register as games for me. FE5: there are moments when thracia is funny (the first time the map screen is completely thracia fog black besides the menu), but this game makes me roll my eyes more than anything. there goes kaga, being an ideas guy without famicom hardware limitations. for the purposes of a tier list like this, it matters that without improvements from patches (like moving units deployments past earlygame) i wouldn't even play it. Fates: i'd have them all higher. people like to say that FE games are strategy games all about short-term versus long-term considerations, but the long-term piece is basically never actually there in this series... beyond the bare minimum of feeding a kill to a weaker unit instead of ur strongest unit sometimes. am i arguing that waifus and reclassing make fates the best true strategy games in the series? i'm not NOT arguing that. at the very least, having actual long-term plans to work towards in these games makes the occasional lulls in chapters less dull than in other games. also the 3DS has superior consolefeel. man... that lunatic ironman with Speedy was really traumatic for you guys! FE8: this is a weird one for me. the entire earlygame is feeding kills to growth units (everyone who isn't Seth) without modern FE growths on maps with virtually no pressure. if one of those units gets blessed and starts going absolutely hog wild it's amusing, but the game takes too long to ramp up, and ends too soon. storywise i never vibed with lyon as a villain but orson's cool. nice to hear raw uncut unfiltered podcast bro booty bopper on occasion

The thing that always annoys me about fe3 is seeing random comments from people saying that nobody cares about fe3. I fully understand that people are a product of what communities they interact in, but fe3 is incredibly popular in japan and was the best selling FE game until awakening I think? There's also the assumption that it's not worth playing because it's the same as fe11-12, which I don't agree is even remotely true.

The thing I dislike about older Fire Emblem games the most - something a long-time fan might have a hard time seeing if they have played the games multiple times - is that a lot of the maps hide important information from the player that would affect how you make decisions. My biggest pet peeves are 1) Not knowing which unit to use to recruit a unit on the battlefield. This dramatically affects how you plan your turns if you don't know the answer here, and you could end up moving your character far away from the recruitable unit or waste a lot of turns talking with a bunch of characters until you find the one that works. 2) Ambush Spawns. These have to be the cheapest thing in Fire Emblem, and I pretty much avoid games or difficulties that force them into the game. If you actually wanted to play the game without a guide to tell you where the ambush spawns are, you are basically forced not to field low defense units ever. It's stupid. 3) Things that have a time limit but you don't know it - like new units appearing that come out of nowhere and give you 1 turn to save a unit or a village. Binding Blade has a lot of these. I even missed Cormag the first time because I beat the chapter too quickly, and I wasn't even trying to LTC it. That is annoying. 4) Hidden chapter requirements, like Gaiden Chapters. 5) Hidden treasure on the map where you need your laptop/phone in front of you to aid in finding the most important items. 6) I remember in FE4, villages had items you would want on certain characters. Knowing which characters would benefit from these items the most beforehand makes your life a lot easier because there is no convoy or trading - everything is done in between chapters using the stupid pawn shop that makes zero sense. I hate stuff like this. Sigurd gets the Pursuit Ring - gee, thanks game! What a waste of money. Basically, when I look at all of these things, the solution is to look at guides beforehand. I hate that. I don't want to have a laptop in front of me as I play the game to prevent ambush spawns or to find hidden treasure or to look up which character I need to use to recruit a unit. It just adds unnecessary weight to the game, and it forces playing the map multiple times to learn this meta information if you don't want to use a guide, which just wastes the player's time.

I do like Fire Emblem: 3 Houses, and I'm content with what is presented. However, I think I would enjoy it more if it had certain features. First, I wished that post-time skip, it felt like the player was actually controlling then army. I would've had it where the player has to recruit, train, and feed genetic recruits in the army. Something where you assign certain characters to the job (if the player gets too many units killed, they get genetic units). In addition, I think it would be neat if the player can assign units to help rebuild the monastery and unlock new features as a result. When it comes to the end of the month battles, the player could assign a unit + a number of genetic units to move toward a certain portion of the world map. This would have the affect that it would weaken the number of troops the player needs to face themselves in the upcoming battle. The unit the player assigns to the missions would get experience like authority and other stats, including a level increase. This would prevent them from falling behind, and give the player a use for them. That's just my thoughts on the matter, and I can understand people not liking it.

You’re probably the only person in the fandom who thinks the original Shadow Dragon is better than the remake. Honestly, I was shocked that Revelation was at the bottom of the fan-voted list (Below the spinoffs, the original three games and Birthright? Really?) Revelation is actually one of my favorite Fire Emblem games. I agree with you that Birthright is a far worse game than Revelation in every way, though it’s still not my least favorite game. I enjoyed most of the maps in Revelation, but the ice ship one you mentioned is one of the few I didn’t like. At 5:45 you sum up a huge part of Revelation’s appeal. There’s an incredible amount of potential for character building and you have all of the games’ items and weapons at your disposal. It also helps that I love the Fates cast (not so much the Hoshidans, but a lot of the Nohrian and neutral characters.) I just wish that there were more supports between the Nohrian and Hoshidan characters, since most of them were quite good and it would have helped develop the Fates’ games world and conflict more.

I think Birthright is better than rev. The early game of rev is so miserable, and the late game is tedium that is only circumvented by how kooky your builds are. At least Birthright is a more overall balanced experience even if it’s so easy it’s boring by the mid game. At the end of the day, the only reason one would replay either is to have fun with the character customization in Fates engine.

I'm a huge FE4 fan. It's my top 3. I used to be an ardent defender of it but years of criticism has shown me that it does indeed have some major issue. I personally chalk up most of these issues being caused by people not being familiar with the game. This would be a big problem but the thing is that you can beat the game without being familiar with the game and its intricacies of the game are only there for people to use meme units. But I digress. My point is that even though i love the game, I've let me people talk me down from seeing it as objectively as a top 3 game in the series. I'm really disappointed that you didn't do the reverse. You pointed out a lot of good criticism of the game and you even gave the game a little credit but you put it in D tier. I get why someone would do this as a knee-jerk reaction but you know how many people in the community love this game with a passion. I would have thought that would have softened your opinion to put the game at least in B but you didn't and that really taints the whole list imo which sucks because I think everything else is in a reasonable place.

What is your personal issue with the ballista in thracia? This is one of the most constant criticism I see of this game, but even after playing it I don't think they're that bad. They don't do enough damage on their own to really mess you up because it's thracia and nothing does. they're not that tanky so you can take them out pretty easily as long as you check where their range overlaps with other enemies. And tankier units can take them just fine.

@@-anomaly186-3 Ballistas have 10 ammo instead of 5 so its not practical to stall them out with a tanky unit. @@breadbaskets2772 From my experience Hit and Run with Finn Brave Lance or the other Cavaliers (An if you need one a healer on standby) usually get rid of the overlapping range issue. You also can use Dagdar, Who has high HP and Accost to wastes extra uses. the unit you gave the HP ring to, Dalsin, and trained fast or high HP units (especially Asvel) on forest tiles can usually ignore them. Also remember their not effective against Karin when dismounted. I don't think it's Super obtuse. There are multiple ways to deal with it, and if you have a lot of dead Units and you have reached the first ballista map your lief is most likely strong enough due to being over leveled that they can take a hit or two and dodge reliably enough in forest and forts. But it's definitely a weirdly harsh introduction to that games ballista and they should have tuned it down. Also it would be better if your units could use them like in the Gba games.

I love Sacred Stones , my first FE game but for me it has these small things : - Game is probably too short for my taste - No gaiden chapters (Due to having tower of valni and Lagdou ruins) - Two paths but its only from Chapter 9-16. Chapter 17 and beyond both paths are the same - The Creature Campaign is good to make units into monsters for the Arena. And unlock some characters to use. But other than that there is no more - Map and level designs are okay, but it has questionable levels like Ghost Ship , Revolt at Carsino , the ghost mansion and Scorched Sands (All FE games have bad maps haha) - Probably also a me thing , lack of characters to use on the main story , probably due to the story been short. I like to have many options while playing a FE game - Bosses for the most part were okay , but would love to have more like a Wyvern Lord , Druid , Summoner , Valkyrie , etc. - Lastly , I do feel the game should let you recruit some of the Grado generals if some things are accomplished, like have only Epharim defeat Selina , or have Eirika clear a chapter in time record to recruit Glen.

It gets a lot of valid criticism, I think, but part of me feels like the aspects of it people really do enjoy get lost in the weeds, so to speak. We have a really flaw-centered way of talking about video games, especially recent entries in long standing series. I sometimes wish it could be different, hope video essays/other content that's carefully praising something can get as much attention in the future as carefully criticizing it. Hated? I actually think it has a bad case of replay ability mindset. It is flawed only for multiple playthroughs. It also promotes multiple playthroughs. Understandable. However on everyone's first playthrough it was 10/10 and everyone loves it. The hate is specifically from people having to play it 4 times. Play any game 4 times in a row and it gets iffy. I think B is a decent rating for it. Gains a lot of points for everything, but those few flaws bring it down.

FE6 is probably the worst paced story in the series with Jahn’s exposition dump with Roy in chapter 24 being the best illustration of Binding Blade’s narrative problems (hero that is, at best, tangentially related to the plot; a main villain that just gets dropped; a threat that no one in the cast but Fae has a dramatic relationship with)

It seems like everyone is kinda unfair with how they treat birthright. They play it in the "worst" and most boring way possible while playing other games, game I find much easier and more braindead if you choose to be even when played in more normal or intended ways, in more flexible or fun ways. I think of it similarly to fe7. Fe7 is mostly just juggernauting with a few challenging situations to work around, and then back to juggernauting. Story is fine if you don't think about it too hard and they're both aesthetically pleasing.

Revelations 6. Birthright 7. Awakening 3H was my first FE game, and Azure Moon is literally one of my most favorite stories in gaming like ever. Dimitri is great. I played 3H 5 times back to back within a span of 7 months and never got bored. Characters are all amazing, story is great, I could go on. Silver Snow’s final map is probably my favorite one in the series so far idc. Genealogy’s story is amazing, I love all the characters, and Ch. 5 is one of the best FE chapters ever. That chapter is literal perfection. The Holy weapons are bonkers, and I liked the maps lol. I had a blast playing it. Echoes is great, music is the best in the series, Celica is awesome (Alm is cool too, but I like Celica more). Her party was my fave. Atlas was my MVP lol. Loved the final map too. Second fave final map for me. Just a good game all around. Conquest is fun. Pair up worked well in Fates, and I love the Nohrian Royal family. Leo is brilliant. I don’t like all the characters in Fates, but I like a good chunk of them. Great maps too. Awakening is the only game I’ve played in my adulthood that I dislike. I played it on Lunatic thinking I’d be able to handle it, and while I was able to for a while, I caved and bought the Exp dlc to finish it. It’s horrible. I don’t like the characters aside from a handful. The story isn’t good enough to make up for how bad my Lunatic experience was, and in comparison to Fates, pair up is dogshit here. Also, Robin is probably my least favorite Avatar. Yes, I genuinely like Corrin and Byleth more. I really just don’t like the game. I wouldn’t go back and play it again even if someone paid me to. If I want to use a single foot swordie to cut through everything in my path, I'd just use Fe6 Rutger. If I want a varied army with different traits and use cases closer in-line with each other I'd play Fe4 part 1. The units in part 1 are just so extreme. Most Fire Emblem games characters are mostly in-line with each other, but there are definitely duds and gods among them. However, the extremes between Radiant Dawn units are ridiculous. Sure, everyone CAN be used endgame with enough exp and levels given to them, but that doesn't mean they're all equally good, useful, or even comparable to be in the same game. In fe4 Sigurd is far and away the best character, but there are enough resources for you to use everybody and play how you want; you can get everybody in gen 1 & 2 promoted, or you can just solo with Sigurd. Hell, it's not even particularly optimal to solo Fe4 unless you have a promoted Forseti user who is nigh untouchable. All the GBA games have units that shine; Pent, Milady, Seth, but your roster is still likely formed by lesser characters and even bad characters you just like using. Radiant Dawn is just so limiting on who you CAN use and who you SHOULD use. Tellius games are infamous for dense amounts of enemies. However, Radiant Dawn also makes a lot of them pack stats comparable or above your average character. This combined with the enemy phase focus of Tellius makes you want to use statistical monsters. Why bother using Edward and Aran to take down someone on player phase when you can just have Jill kill EVERYTHING at once on enemy phase? Even if you wanted to vary the characters you use, guess what? Radiant Dawn stops that too. While it has one of the biggest rosters of any Fire Emblem game, it severely limits when and where you can use them. Part 1 chapter 8, a bunch of targets in the swamp you gotta protect. You can race to kill enemies or use Rafael to dance for Jill so she can rescue the villagers and- oh wait, you can't use Jill here. Gotta use Vika who can't rescue them and has to transform. She's not even that bad, it's just the fact I have to use HER and not anybody else. This goes on and on, with the game limiting when you can use characters you would normally want to use. Part 1 feels like a slog to get through, with disappointment from your characters and the levels. Just when you get used to how to use the Dawn Brigade, your enemies get promoted to surpass them again. This doesn't make it difficult, it just makes me wanna bring less units. I'd bench Micaiah if I could. Sothe is well designed, especially around forging ranged knives and how he interacts with kill setups, no crits from bronze dagger, and stealing to give you economic advantages, but one unit an army does not make. Even then, when you get to use him again in part 3, the levels aren't designed for a thief and his stats are irrelevant. You said in another series he was a well balanced Jagen, but idk man. Most players will use Seth and Titania the whole game, which is not the best balance, but if EVERY player is practically told by the game through gameplay to drop them at the same time it doesn't feel like the player has much liberty or satisfaction. They even force his promotion on him; he's a Jagen so he hardly has time to get ANY levels and when he comes back he's irrelevant, so his triumphant moment just looks like a stat bandaid for a unit who died 5 chapters ago. If Part 1 is a slog, part 2 is a chore. I actually like Elincia's Gambit (cuz I get to use Haar and Nephenee; she's awesome with transfers), but it's 4 chapters that feel like a demo for their own game. I need to go through the same set pieces EVERY time, and most of these levels are either super boring because Haar can just wipe the board, tedious because you face 20 units with only 3, especially painful if you don't transfer a Nephenee so she can't even double, a fog of war map, or the mess known as Geoffrey's charge. If you don't care about Bexp, Geoffrey's charge is just hitting pitiful units over and over until you get to the challenging part at the end; horribly designed. Might as well just cut the first 2/3rds of the level off. If you DO care about Bexp, you gotta leave units alive. This involves managing to move them out of your way and baiting them. If I am given 6 units and a wall of allies to charge into another army and the game incentivizes me to unequip 2 and leave them in a bush (Danved, Makalov), leave one at the start of the map (Astrid) and just boss rush with the other 3 (unless you want good loot, in which case you gotta randomly step on the same tiles over and over) I say that isn't good or fun design either. Random tiles on the map for loot suck. Sure, thieves get it every time (unless they don't, thanks Biorhythm), but there are plenty of levels where you get these tiles and trying to get a thief to that spot is either impractical or, because of deployment limitations, impossible. Greil Mercenaries maps are the only ones that feel good, and that's because all your characters are usable and have different tasks relative to each other. Even then, you can solo them with Haar or get in annoying situations (ledges are cool, but designing maps so you CAN'T use cavalry after a certain point is actually stupid. Make me WANT to not use cavalry if you think they're too good, don't FORCE me to stop using them. Limit movement on mounted units indoors? ok, noted and strategized around. Stopping certain units from playing the game when they aren't even that good in the game? tragic). That being said, just because you CAN solo something with a character doesn't mean you should judge it like everyone is doing that. If Radiant Dawn was just Greil Mercenaries missions over and over I'd say it was damn great. Unfortunately the game takes that away too. Radiant Dawn has a lot of cool ideas, but it falls just so flat. We have this amazing world with animal people nations, but we don't see their nations or lifestyles in a meaningful sense ever. Instead you get to revisit that damned bridge from Path of Radiance. Interesting level setup? Too bad there's a literal avalanche of enemies and only 1-2 units per army can handle them. Authority stars back? No control over them; they're either map wide and on your lord or nonexistent depending on the army. It's so damn ironic to me that the FE game with a cast as big as Radiant Dawn's, they ended up making some of the most homogenous, uninspired gameplay in the series. Maybe it's because this game is very enemy phase focused unlike games like fe4 and fe3h, but all these things combined with that feel like a drag to play.

Thankyou. Everyone dropping their knees to feverishly suck RD off gets incredibly aggravating. It's a soul-sucking micro-management black hole of a game with no proper sense of progression due to the party changing musical chairs bullshit.

Some few notes here : 1) eh BR has the same number of maps as other fates games ?? It's not longer than CQ or Rev so i don't see how the story is more bloated/longer too ? That's literally your only point about why it has the worst plot of the 3, other than corrin somehow being worse without explaining much ?? 2) there's literally nothing different when playing indoors and outdoors maps of FE3 except that your mounted units can only use swords and levin swords are buyable anyway, you mentioned that in other FE games you bring up utility units and combat units but FE3 you bring different units based on maps which is.....not true ? There's nothing stopping you from bringing Minerva, Palla, Sirius, any staff user and Phina to any different maps because again only thing that massively change is no mount and only swords ( which is like, it's the only good weapon in the first trilogy ), and you never explained why you bring different units 3) FE2 enemies aren't bulky ?? Someone like Alm has 10 atk, doubles a lot at base and brigands barely has 3 def, monsters besides dragons are a joke too, only enemies who are bulky are armors and enemies with shields, if anything only FE games with bulky enemies are FE9/10 MM, FE13 L+, BR late game enemies and 3H maddening mode

1.) that wasn’t what I said about BR. Iy wasn’t about the length, but about the tedium. It’s by far the most tedious, although all three are equally bloated. 2.) Yes, you can deploy everyone, but the Book 1 maps were designed with Paladin and cav movement in mind, and to have characters like Jagen and Hardin take stat and movement penalties means that they’re the same maps, with the same characters, just slower. Mechanically, it’s not as developed as FE5 because it uses weapon level instead of weapon rank, but I like that it at least causes roster churn, at least at the lower end of your deployment (the mediocre mounted units and foot units) 3.) Some of the early game enemies in Gaiden have 26+ HP, which is very high when most characters are weak and inaccurate. Alm, the strongest early character 4 shots many early enemies which is very, very bulky by Fire Emblem standards. It cascades when you consider how bad accuracy can get for physical attacks, and the amount of attacks needed to kill enemies balloons. Avoid can, and often is, a part of enemy bulk. Again, this is primarily a problem early game when your weapon selection is limited and your army hasn’t promoted

Yeah the Kaga games aren’t actually all that good by modern standards but they weren’t released in the west so people had like find them. So it’s got the elitist weeb and secret things going for them. Basically unless you were going to like the games then you likely never finished them enough to hate the games.

Putting 3Houses anywhere above C = your opinion is invalid.

It's a great lesson in why we need soft locked classes for characters, I don't mind having characters with secondary classes that they can switch too, but allowing any unit to be whatever forces a design philosophy change which isn't fun. Basically in that all the maps have to be based around a different level of challenge, mainly stat blocks. Look at conquest, the first couple of chapters are really tight because they know exactly what you got and it allows each unit to shine. In three houses my Felix could be a flier, my lindhart a swordmaster, it doesn't matter to me or the game

Hard disagree. For all it’s problems I never felt like I was having the MC dick sucked by the whole cast like fates, and it isn’t completely lifeless like shadow dragon. The monastery sections aren’t great your second and repeated playthrough I agree

I absolutely live for the fact that no matter where you put 3 Houses on a tier list, the FE fanbase seems to light itself on fire with rage. Put it in high tier? REEEEEEEEEE, BAD GAME, IT RUINED FIRE EMBLEM!!! Put it in low tier? REEEEEEEEEE, GOOD GAME, BEST GAME IN THE SERIES! And if you put it in mid tier you get yelled at by both sides at the same time!

I letterally cannot fathom sov in s. Like it's so far outside my experience with the game that outside of the presentation there's not a single thing about it that makes sense. The maps are awful, the gameplay is super shallow, the story sucks, its tedious as hell to play after part 2 and none of unique mechanics outside of white magic are even remotely more fun than how they are in the rest of series. Honestly the only game worse than it for me is the og gaiden.
