melons in general can be very flavorful but many examples in supermarkets have almost no flave. the ideal commercial fruit can be picked under ripe is hard so it wont get damaged and can be stored over a year w/o consumers balking. apples are ideal where many fruits like sapotes jaboticaba cherimoyas are rarely seen for sale. brix meter can help you find the good stuff available to you. it is sad what we get to eat from stores and what is actually possible for many of these fruits. the internet in some cases can save the day and link the farmer right to the consumer through direct delivery or tasting tours. PS. right along with the flavors are the nutritional values things like vitaman c in an orange were established many years ago from ave fruits in the 50s or 60s. the ave brix for an orange is 10 the ones we buy now in the stores are 3-6 extremely good orange could be 15-20+ brix difference between 10 mg low ave 80 and high 400. its up to us to make sure we are eating food that is full of nutrition and not calories. empty food leaves you feeling hungry no matter how much you eat!
