@ROBERT MONTGOMERY You know, I never thought about it, but yeah, DR2 did have the worst gameplay of the 3 mainline games. It's most people's favourite game in the franchise because of the story, yeah, but it does have the worst trial minigames.

I am a big fan of Danganronpa but a lot of the fans do admit they never played the game, but instead saw their favorite LPer play the game. I know a lot of people who only play DR in V3. I love the minigames in DR2 but I do agree it is the worst in the series with how they tried to make them complex and different, that some aren't that great. My issue is how he sees the characters since their FTEs show them off the best. Like if you didn't do Mishima's confidants in Royal, you think he is some weird kid.

The gameplay is the worst though imo, which brings it down quite a bit, but I don't know if you should be playing a visual novel if you're interested in the gameplay. The gameplay does bring it down but I still prefer it over the first game.

@ROBERT MONTGOMERY gameplay isnt the selling point of danganronpa though, its the tense set piece and watching the mystery unfold that makes it so compelling. p5 has really fun mechanics, but i often feel that its core gameplay loop is less interesting compared to the danganronpa games (since each investigation is completely different)

I can understand your opinion of Paper Mario The Origami King. For me, it was one of my absolute favourites this year. I'm such a big puzzle fan, so I really didn't mind doing the regular battles every now and then, especially since they give you coins which, you run out of pretty dang quickly near the third chapter. I also believe that there's more to the game's general gameplay than just regular battles. I think the boss battles are absolutely amazing, the paper macho enemies are a brilliant way to bring overworld battles into the mix and there are just so many minigames scattered around to keep things fresh and new. The story was also more than enough to keep me engaged, with each new area introducing new and whacky characters, and completely different yet interesting settings.

I personally really enjoyed Origami King, but I feel like The main thing that determines how much people enjoy it is usually how much they enjoyed the battle system. I personally enjoyed the battle system, and would frequently seek out battles in late-game areas to test my skills, but I’ve heard many people didn’t enjoy the battles nearly as much. I feel that the battle system truly shines in the boss fights, who all have unique gimmicks that change how you fight them, such as the invulnerable shell of the Earth Vellumental forcing you to aim for certain spaces, or the targeted missiles from Jean-Pierre Colored Pencils the 3rd making you try to avoid certain spaces.

I always really like lists like these! There's a lot to love about it and even in what few words are said, you get a really nice view of the thoughts of the person behind them and what they appreciate. Your emphasis on Yakuza's fun and story instead of its wealth of side content tells me we value totally different things in that game, and that's really neat. The fact that you feel the pain that is Danganronpa's "but this ONE THING and ONE CHARACTER though" is a catharsis I didn't know I wanted today. Thanks for that. I feel awkward now. But I dunno man. Hades is either the best or second best game released last year, but Donkey Kong Jungle Beat has a level named Monkey Fest, I think you made the right call.

TOK has good characters and story though. The main thing that holds it back is the gameplay, which isn't even that much of a hold back for people that enjoy puzzle games. Most people I've talked to really like this game.

@@staticchimera44 I'm talking mostly about designs. Every friendly NPC is a generic toad or a generic Mario enemy. Every enemy is an origami version of a generic Mario enemy. Every boss is giant sentient office supplies, because paper1!!1!!1! I know some of that is apparently outside of the devs' control, but whether it is or not, it makes this game feel very lackluster and unoriginal compared to the first three entries

@@skirdus367 I don't really think the lack of designs on NPCs is much of a negative. I think of it more like, it's something that's nice to have, but it's not necessary. Something like that can't really hold a game back. Also, when it comes to important plot characters, the development team is allowed to create entirely new characters, just like how they made Olivia and Olly. They just aren't allowed to modify already existing Mario characters outside of clothes. Having the boss battles be giant sentient office supplies is an intentionally design choice, not because they were restricted. And playing through the game, it makes absolute sense why the LoS are giant office supplies. Many people I've talked to, including myself, have found one of their favourite parts of the game to be in the LoS.

Funny to see how different opinions on danganronpa v3's ending can be ^^ SPOILER ALERT I personnaly loved how it pushed far the theme of lies. Making it an ending where everyone can have his own hypothesis of what is the truth (Is Tsumugi brainwashed into thinking she is the mastermind ? Did the participants really wanted to participate in this killing game ? etc). The 4th wall break was great too. For some reasons there is people thinking the public showed at the end should be the real danganronpa community. But I never saw it like that. The people we saw is the public of the reality show, not the real fans of the game. And I really like the final twist for the first class trial, making the trap of Suishi and Kaede finally succeded.

I had so much fun with Bug Fables I sunk 120+ hours into it across 2.5 playthroughs. I definitely recommend picking it up again when you’re looking for something to do cause it is at least in my top 3 favorite games. Personal opinions aside, good video, I definitely enjoyed it.

5:57 Alax, you are just starting your FE3H journey. Take a break for recharging if you need to. In my experience, 100 hours is more or less what took me to finish my first playthrough plus the DLC campaign. I'm currently at more than 1100 hours of gameplay, having completed all routes on Normal, and then started doing them on Maddening again, but I'm STILL missing two of them. I am currently on a break from this game. Work got me much busier during the last months, and I've spent most of my free time with Fire Emblem Heroes since August. I hope to get some more time soon to both play the game more and to do some videos I intended to do several months ago.

@@shadestrider1033 I’m one of those 1 > 2 fans. I loved the first game because it was unnerving and the atmosphere being trapped inside Hopes Peak Academy was pretty amazing. Although I did like the second game, I kind of felt bored going through it despite loving the characters more in this game and this game expanding the lore substantially. Chapters 3-5 were a drag barring some stand-out phenomenal moments. Also, Nagito is probably the most, interesting character in the franchise, I’ll leave it at that.

Basically my tier list is (not in order): S: Persona 5, MINECRAFT AGAIN BABY A: Animal Crossing New Horizons, Last of Us Remastered, God of War, Dragon Quest 11 S, Uncharted 4, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm, The Wind Waker (GameCube version), Cuphead, Overwatch B: Ratchet and Clank, Super Mario 3D All Stars, Paper Mario: The Origami King, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, Fortnite C: Persona 5 Royal (I beat the true ending and hated it, I’m sorry) There’s probably more, I just forgot about them

Alax, I highly recommend playing Bug Fables all the way through. It's very good. I also recommend not looking up anything about it. Even if you play it sparingly, you can always use the journal to figure out where you are and what you're supposed to be doing, even if you play it after 6 months! Hopefully it won't come to that, though, as this game is amazing. I love the community and the game itself. If you like story, then this game should grow on you quickly after you get past the first chapter.

Props for including RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, great game I've enjoyed since childhood and still do today, especially with the OpenRCT2 mods which allow multiplayer. Just played the Ace Attorney trilogy recently and I'd highly recommend it. Great humor and very thrilling at times

Hades: Same. Would never have thought I'd have this much fun with a roguelike. The gameplay is repetitive, but fun and always a good challenge. The characters are wonderfully designed and a joy to listen to. I'm tackling the post-game. Bug Fables: Loved it. Great characters, intuitive battles, engaging story, and some pretty strong moments. I would call it the Paper Mario we deserve, but that doesn't give it enough credit. I've decided on calling the genre "Storybook RPG". Paper Mario has a whole different meaning these days. Speaking of which... Paper Mario, The Origami King: When buying this game, I told myself that I couldn't play the post-game of Bug Fables until finishing it. The idea was to give it a fair chance. I initially played until right before the water Vellumental temple before it finally got to me. I've picked it up again recently. To my surprise, there are things to like about this game. There are some rather well-designed areas and the dialogue is pretty good as well. Too bad the battle system drags all that through the mud in anything that isn't a boss battle. I've just got to find that last ribbon, take the fight to Olly, and finally free myself from this self-imposed Bug Fables prohibition. Those are the games on this list that I checked out last year. I also played Hollow Knight, but that was a bit further back. To be blunt, I'm a fan; it's awesome; its sequel brings me similar thoughts; I'm hyped.

@@Rediscool9 As I said, I still have to finish it. I can't really give an entirely conclusive opinion until I do. Although, based on what I've seen so far and my limited reviewing skills, I'd say about 6? Definitely no more than 7. Don't take that rating too seriously because I don't really know what to give it. My thoughts are kind of mixed for this one and I don't think finishing the game is going to change that. I decently enjoyed the dialogue and the theme of some areas, but the battle system is unforgivingly tedious, repetitive, and unenjoyable. I've never had fun with a regular enemy encounter. The only time it's actually interesting is during boss fights. The puzzle system is much less annoying there. Also, they at least try to mix things up.

I also played Super Metroid for the first time this year. It's crazy how that game makes you an instant Metroid fan. Since playing it, I've played 3 more Metroid games and dabbled in speedrunning Super. Totally recommend to anyone looking for something to play on Switch.

On your only played for 5 minutes list, I highly, highly recommend Bug Fables when you’re in the mood for a new RPG. It’s the first 2 paper Mario games together and 10x better combined. It was my game of the year 2020. You won’t be disappointed in Bug Fables.

Personal favorite I played 2020 would be Va-11 Hall-a. Didn't know what to think going in, then immediately loved it, realised it was exactly the kind of game I'd been looking for, and blazed through the story twice for all the endings. Even then I still have stuff to do. If you want a story and especially character driven game, I recommend this wholeheartedly, if you want gameplay, look elsewhere as this is mostly dialogue. Great dialogue, but still just dialogue.

People love to mention TTYD's backtracking, but I'll take that *any day* over whatever Origami King was trying to accomplish. The story, music, art style, it's all an A tier package, but the "meat" of it, the gameplay, just didn't need to try and scratch the puzzle genre itch. And I love my puzzle games. I guess what I'm trying to say is that at the end of the day, after trying it, Stuart Little 2 Remousetered had the better battle system. ...I was surprised too.

When you talked about Soup Or Meat Roid, I had flashbacks to when my friend sat me down and made me play it. I didnt know how much I would enjoy it. I was hooked. He hit me with Zero Mission which was great, and then i started branching out to other metroidvanias. If i wasnt so busy with college (hence why im watching this video now instead of in January), Id be doing nothing but play Holoknight.

Danganronpa 2's characters are ones you either love or hate, no inbetweens. Yes, the characters are based on tropes, but is that a bad thing? A well-executed trope is still well-executed. Also, the trope thing makes sense if you think about the fact they're supposed to be one trick ponies. Besides, Danagnronpa itself is such an outlandish concept, that it's only natural that it's characters should be as outlandish as the world itself. But that's just my opinion, and there is nothing wrong with having a different one.

What’s funny is, as a super fan of the first three paper mario games and having used to challenge run TTYD, I completely forgot that the origami king even existed... Probably a good summary of how the game was received imo

It actually WASN’T received that way. It’s got an 8 out of 10 on metacritic and is still fondly or not so fondly remembered by plenty of people. Just because YOU forgot it existed, doesn’t mean the majority of people do as well.

I swear, I see a bunch of modern games on here then it's like, Link to the Past, Super Mario Bros, Super Metroid. It's like someone wanted to be a gamer THIS YEAR and needed to play everything important immediately! I'm joking of course, this is a nice video. Also, you may like the Phoenix Wright even if you're sour on Danganronpa. Plenty of overlap between the fans, but there are also a lot of people that find the Danganronpa games too...I don't even know what word, overdone, overly-dramatic, over-clutteredwhatever while the Phoenix Wright games can feel more sincere or thoughtful and refined with their (usually) simpler or more cohesive mechanics, while still being very exaggerated and "anime". At least with the earlier stuff (like the Trilogy), and the Great Ace Attorney games.
