A ton of people did, I get maybe not wherever you are from. But i got my oled for just $140 after trading in my Switch on a special deal. Others just got it for the screen and the OLED actually is the reason I play it in handheld mode more now than docked

@@elwinroyale if you play primarily in docked, it's not worth it. I play mostly handheld, so I thought having the bigger screen, the better colors and everything kind of made up for me selling my old switch. Again, if you don't play in handheld, it's a waste. I use the kickstand a lot more than I thought I would and appreciate the bigger one on the oled. Also, there was a slight performance increase in-between the two (really, the three if you got your switch day one.) It has better battery life compared to the day one switch. It has slightly better thermals. It's all minute, but they are improvements. It also gets 64 gigs compared to the 32 on the day one and red box models. Besides the oled, the kickstand and the bigger screen, that's all you're really getting.

OLED screens are super expensive usually so it wasn't that bad to me when I factored in just how much the screen costs, also the improved battery life helped as well. Since my 2017 switch battery life was abysmal. Guess it depends on what makes it actually worth it for someone to upgrade. Selling the old console offsets the cost a lot

The switch lite is the best handheld ever made. It had a flip cover for a start that's cheap. It actually feels like a handheld unlike the nornal switch where the joycons just feel like they're gonna fall off. It's small so you don't have to take a big case and again it has a protective hori flip case

i use a GPD Win Max 2 as both a steamdeck and a computer because of how powerful it is. Its the first computer ive had no issue with and runs like a dream, its small form factor made it a perfect companion travelling to and from uni, and you dont have to buy a controller for games. I adore this little thing and will be crushed when it inevitably fails on me one day. It being my 21st birthday present dosnt help too but, its cute :)

There were tons of companies pumping out handhelds BEFORE the switch. Just most people were ignorant/didn't care. Also GPD is one of those companies that was doing things prior to everyone else and as a result if you like WINDOWS handhelds they make pretty much the best. Unfortunately being a Chinese company you have to deal with all of that for RMAs and stuff but also unlike most big companies they fully support you modifying/repairing your own product.

I carry the 35xx SP in my pocket probably about 5 or 6 days a week. It has replaced my Miyoo mini. I have a steam deck, but I have been using my G-cloud much more lately. It is lighter and has better battery life and I already have a great gaming PC so I can stream that to a handheld. My switch gathers dust. I probably SHOULD be playing some of the exclusives, but after Zelda and a little bit of F-zero 99 I kinda slowed down on the switch. So 35xxSp + G-Cloud + Gaming PC "I use them almost every day" Switch & Steam deck are "Great but I don't play them much" P.S. I have a high end Android phone and it lives in-between "I use it every day" and "Great but I don't play it much" because I DO use it every day, but I only game on it occasionally. That being said if I didn't have a steam deck and a G-cloud, I would be gaming on my phone probably every day. Android emulation is a GREAT place for those of us willing to configure our games. I find Android to be kinda like a windows handheld. You need to be willing to do the work.

As someone who has recently done this myself, I am enjoying playing the Pokemon games that Nintendo didn't give us as well as ROM hacks that are really cool. The RG35XX SP does look really fun for the same reasons though.

U can mod all switch models now, but u have to install a chip.🤷🏼‍♀️ plus once chipped it s way easier to use than a modded v1 , where u have to use ur rcm jig for every sd card changes. And i dont think it s very good for the device to do that often. With a chipped one u dont need the jig anymore.

It’s awesome to see wood talk about retro handhelds. I’ve been really getting into them over the last year and have used quite a few at this point and they are absolutely fantastic if you want to play old games at the PS2 and GameCube level and below. Very portable And generally great experiences overall. Definitely too many handhelds. You get to a point where you just decide that whatever that’s out currently is good enough for what you want and you accept that next week they’ll be something better and newer releasing

I wonder how well these handhelds will hold up over time. My original Switch that I bought in 2020 has started melting, literally. The plastic has become soft, especially on the joycons. Some parts even feel a bit sticky. And I use a grip and thumb caps. The joycon sticks without the thumb caps are just soft and mushy.

That's unusual and shouldn't be happening. You got something like isopropyl alcohol on it? Plastics don't just melt randomly and it's caused by a chemical reaction. My switch and older handhelds feel identical to how they felt when I first got them

Yeah, I love the Analogue Pocket. I was always watching for a re-release and when they did I quickly ordered the pink one, because I had a feeling it would be the last one people would choose. So I managed to get one! Finished Pokemon Yellow on it just a few days ago. Using it over the Switch as a handheld. The Switch is now always hooked up to the tv (it's the first model, so it doesn't last much on battery).

After playing with all Nintendo Switch models , nowadays I really play the switch lite the most. The smaller screen really make the games look a bit crisper. I really wish there would be a Gameboy micro sized analog pocket or third party emulation handheld, which could play anything including 6h generation games. Bought used ally z1 extreme, added full size m2 2tb ssd with adapter, it’s dead simple if you held a screwdriver in your hands at least once in your hands. When you optimize windows, you can get away with ridiculously low power consumption, add that to a power bank, that can output 65w of power, you’re looking at 5~6ish hours of gaming on the go while playing AAA games at 10-20w APU while getting solid 50-60 fps. Vrr screen does magic in this fps range. If you’re a pc gamer, rog ally is a solid choice with ridiculous performance. And as a bonus you can play all your pc games libraries locally on the device in offline modes. Because it’s literally a pc 😁this is coming from a person who used to own Nintendo switch, I loved the handheld format of it, but hated to pay for the same games twice on my pc and Nintendo store + AAA ports on the switch had dodgy performance and significant graphics downgrades.

I actually like it more than my regular Switch, I think the size is just perfect (regular Switch is too big and unwieldy) and I really really hope that the Switch 2 is around that size. You don't need that big of a screen when you can dock the thing into a huge tv, right? I'd rather be able to carry it comfortably when I'm using it as a portable.

Nice little recap. I love my Steam Deck and that's still my main handheld these days, but I keep my Switch around for Pokémon and anything that might have multiplayer (and stuff that I already own in my backlog). I still have an Anbernic rg351v that I bought back in 2020 that I love, it's perfect for any retro games PS1 and below (and Steam Deck for emulating anything above that). And a modded 3DS to round off my trio for exclusively DS/3DS stuff. So Deck/rg351v/3DS is the main trio I've been rocking and they compliment each other well and I'm more than happy with that for right now.

Yup, you nailed it with the Steam Deck and the Switch. Sure, the other pc handhelds may be true windows pcs and yaddi yaddi yadda. BUT, what makes the Steam Deck great and appealing to a lot more people is that - much like the Switch - it’s a simple boot up and play system. You don’t need to mess around with settings, UI isn’t clunky, you just boot the device up, select the game you want to play then it’s there, running smoothly. It very much understands the nature and mass appeal of game consoles like the Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation.
