To be fair, I've 100% it and while I did enjoy the experience, I don't think it deserved the best indie game award. The game is good but could be so much better, story was good, but sometimes it felt like the drama was too forced? The MC reasoning wasn't good and glimpses of the past made it so complicated. Then, the grinding system similar to Final Fantasy Tactics so you can learn skills, it felt so unnecessary. Overall, I gave it an 7.5, while Sea of Stars felt more solid, gave it an 8.5. Inside (yeah it was definitely the ending that makes people love this - Hyper Light Drifter would have been my pick from this year but I haven't played Stardew) 4.Animal Well (I think Balatro will win at the game awards, but Animal Well was my favorite) 3.Sea of Stars (This game is incredible and easily my top choice though all of the games this year were cool) 2. It was a popularity thing for sure, from sheer quality HK wins almost objectively, but Cuphead had the virality factor meaning that in the vote it was a landslide. Also Hollow Knight didn't really take off in popularity until around a year and a half after it's release, so the results honestly make sense no matter how much I disagree
@ineedabettername3190Ай бұрын
This is how I feel about Stray winning best indie game when it’s probably the worse game out of the nominees. Like it’s a 7/10 competing against strong 8’s to 9-10/10’s like Tunic, Sifu, and Neon White. I imagine it only won due to popularity similar to what you said about cuphead. However while I do prefer Hollow Knight over Cuphead, I still think it’s an amazing game along with some of the other nominees that year. So I can’t really be that mad about it. This also came later but the dlc is phenomenal as well. Also @diaryofarobot Celeste came out in early 2018 not 17. I’d have both Celeste and Hollow Knight as 10/10 and having to pick the better game is like having to pick a favorite kid. It’s hard to say…
@diaryofarobotАй бұрын
@@ineedabettername3190 I haven't played Tunic/Sifu/Neon White/Stray so I can't really comment on that, but I heard Neon White has a very corny style and Sifu seems to be only human enemies and bosses, I guess some people are fine by that but imo a game like that would get insanely repetitive insanely quickly Cuphead I actually haven't played all of it but I've watched many videos on the stuff I didn't do (namely DLC and island 3) so I'm very familiar with it but I'd say it's like a 9-9.5/10 game, whereas Hollow Knight is 10/10 one of my favorite games period Celeste I know it was released in 2018, but I wanted to include it in my initial "ranking". However, I know it's kind of a hot take but 10/10 for Celeste is imo a bit too much. Like as a platformer it's probably a 10/10 and tbh I don't really have anything to criticize really, but I still feel like I much preferred the others. Hell, I'd even say I prefer Rayman Legends over Celeste even if Celeste technically has better level design and stuff
@ineedabettername3190Ай бұрын
@ Neon White’s gameplay is phenomenal but the dialogue sucks ass. I mean I get that it’s intentionally cringy and is supposed to mimic early 2,000’s dubbed anime that you’d see on Toonmai. I mean the main character is voiced by the guy who played Spike in Cowboy Bebop dub (which is unironically really good). Additionally there’s an anime opening and the visual novel component is broken up in-between the game’s missions, so it’s kinda episodic. I think the creators are well aware of this though since they knew it wasn’t gonna attract the same mass appeal that Donut County did and there’s thankfully a skip button. I think it’s fine for a first play through if you wanna read something entertainly dumb and stupid but man, the dialogue gets a little much at times (eg. “you can never call yourself a true gamer if you only play on easy mode *insert sigma voice here🐺,” yes that’s a real quote 😭). I personally don’t think it subtracts from the game as I more view it as a bonus thing from the gameplay which is what you play the game for. On subsequent playthroughs I always skip it. When it comes to the style I think it does really work when it comes to the game’s visuals and music. They included a game with a Machine Girl double record 🤯. But seriously it’s a great dnb breakcore mix and it continues the sound of their great RePorpoised Phantasies. Visually it’s kinda like Mirrors Edge with its white architecture which is contrasted with vibrant objects and whatnot to lead you in the right direction. Gameplay is phenomenal though it embraces the art of speed running and makes you want to improve your time while performing insane acrobatic stuff like it’s nothing. I’d say overall the game is like a 9.5/10 just because the gameplay is THAT GOOD. If you’re on the fence about playing it because of the visual novel part don’t you’re doing yourself a disservice by missing out on this amazing game. Sifu I can understand the beat em up gameplay not really being for everyone although for what it is, it’s great. As for Celeste I think doing the b/c sides and farewell makes you appreciate more the tight controls, level design, and speed run tech. That being said post game gets a little extreme and definitely isn’t for everyone. Farewell takes people at least 10 hours to beat if not more which is longer than the main game. This is for one level.
@diaryofarobotАй бұрын
@@ineedabettername3190 The quote you mentioned sounds funny imo but ok Regarding Sifu, I like beat em ups the problem is the variety i.e since it isn't really that fictitious, there are only so many enemy types they can use, and the bossfights will feel too grounded and repetitive imo idk if it's the case Yeah I never did the B/C sides of Celeste and Farewell. I've seen a lot of videos though so I know the gist of it. But it's definitely way too hard (this comes from someone who did P5 in Hollow Knight, so while I can take difficult challenges, Celeste was way too much) plus I prefer the overall movement style/fluidity, unique worlds, bossfights and soundtrack in Rayman Legends

A lot of the early rooms were to simple to be fun but i would still take some damage because i wasn't fully locked in because of the boredom, so i eventually would die to a boss. And had to start over again. Was i missing something that makes the game so great? Or is it just a skill issue?

The game gets extremely good with time. I was in the same boat as you but give it time to unfold and it’s really good.

FUN! While not game of the year material, Bright Infinite Memory is interesting for what it is. Also shoutout to A Memoir Blue. Some of my favorite indies have been Hellblade, Ori and Cuphead.

By some reason I could never really get into Hades after playing dead cells. I get way more fun, addiction and enjoyment playing cells and idk why😅

Fun video! My list (ignoring 2024) would be: 1. Disco Elysium 2. Hades 3. Sea of Stars 4. Cuphead 5. Kena 6. Stray 7. Rocket League 8. Celeste Haven't played Inside or Shovel Knight Including nominees: 1. Inscryption 2. Disco Elysium 3. Hades 4. Transistor 5. Pyre 6. The Messenger 7. Sea of Stars 8. Axiom Verge 9. Cult of the Lamb 10. The Witness

Go play Outer Wilds, and stick with it. TRUST me. You won't regret it.
@camdewan6087Ай бұрын
@TrustedJustus played it to completion (just the base game, no dlc). I enjoyed it well enough, but not nearly to the level I enjoyed Disco Elysium.
@TrustedJustusАй бұрын
@@camdewan6087 Fair enough, but I strongly encourage you to give the DLC a go. It's just as good but in a different way. And why isn't Outer Wilds on your nominee's list? ::(
@camdewan6087Ай бұрын
@@TrustedJustus well I was still picking one game from every year, so Disco Elysium was the competition for that year haha. I think if I was just picking the top 10 of all the nominees, Outer Wilds would probably be around 8 or 9 for me.

The Witness is phenomenal and much better than Inside. I don't normally love puzzle games, but The Witness is top-notch.

19:40 Celeste is not that difficult at all. The C sides and Farewell is very hard, but the normal game levels are fairly easy. And SIGNIFICANTLY easier than Super Meat Boy.

Even though I love stardew valley remember this was the year it came out before alot of the major updates. From what I saw it still was a great game at base but keep in mind this was base stardew

Hades should’ve been GOTY in 2020 over TLOU 2 imo and I liked tlou but it’s like an 8/10 to me
