I started listening to leprous about 5 years ago and let me tell you this band is something else. I always find myself truly loving and craving their songs like no other's. I would like to encourage you to give Aphelion another listen to, their songs in that album take a bit of time to dissect than the others in their album's. When i first listened to it I only liked about 1 or 2 songs from it but after listening to it a couple of more times (about 3) and not forcing myself to try and like them i truly saw that this album (to me) is their best at crafting songs that you don't necessarily like at first but once you give it a chance it makes you want to go back to them over and over. An example of this to me would be On Hold, when i first listened to it i was very ingnorant and was always waiting for that punch line, that agrresive moment, that melodic part, but the song takes it's time and actually gives all of that but to it's pace. And once a i really understood the song and memorized it's pace it became one if not the most amazing song that i have listened from Leprous.

Yeah, Leprous is definitely one of those bands that really takes the time to craft their music. I agree that their albums need to be listened to repeated times to truly start to appreciate and hear all of the subtleties going on. I'll certainly be listening to Aphelion more, even though I did rank it lower I still love it! It's a super relaxing, dreamy album to listen to :)

Very insightful. I was introduced to this band with Coal which is still my favorite album of theirs to date. I'm attracted to the heavier, darker sound these guys do so well. From Malina on that's been dialed back more and more, which I think is a pity. Still, the class and quality of the music cannot be denied. The singer is especially amazing.

Yep, I agree completely. When they embrace their darker, heavier side I am in love with their sound! They lose me a bit when they go lighter and more melodic, although they still manage to make some very beautiful music. The vocalist is fantastic on every album though!

Great review! I just recently got Into this band and I'm glad that I did. The first song I ever heard from them was "Alleviate" and it really hit me in the feels. I've had some people close to me pass away and this song quickly became a go to song for healing and comfort. I'd say pitfalls is my favorite album so far, Im still going through thier discography. Anyway, thanks for the in depth review of all thier albums! Take care.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! There is definitely a lot of emotion to Leprous' music, I pick up on that too when I listen to them. Fantastic stuff for sure!

I can't listen to Coal without repeating Foe at least 10 times. It's such a great opener! Also really like how each of their releases have a distinct sound. Coal being my intro to them, I definitely prefer their heavier sound but I've grown to appreciate the softer stuff. I find it requires being in a certain mood to appreciate. It's a beautiful thing when it finally "clicks". Have had quite a few of those moments with Coal and Pitfalls.

I can totally relate for this ranking. The "B" classification is very difficult, cause Pitfalls is a very very great album (below, at the bottom, i lose hope, the sky is red, observe the train). Looking at this, i would say A :) And the last album, it is growing and still growing

For me, tall poppy syndrome is unbeatable. Definitely an A+ album for me. (Only weakness probably being the title track that gets a little too pretentious). Overall it’s a masterpiece in every way.

Great ranking, you were exactly like me the first time I heard leprous, didn't like too much the first two albums, but loved the next ones. Eventually hearing again their songs I discovered "we are not a metal band". They like things of metal, but they are not a metal band, it's weird; but it's cool when you understand that way of thinking. So, when I starded to understand that, suddenly I loved the first two albums, because, when you compare any song of the first to the last album, are just 2 different worlds, two tipes of music and 2 tipes of felling, heaviness and melancholical. And I loved them more when I tried to hear music similar to them and didn't find anything similar, with those synths, angelic and heavy instrumentations. I've heard a lot of bands and artist and Leprous haven't bored me yet. Even now two years since I heard them for the first time till today. Sometimes I hear things on their music like hidden instrumentations or details that are very on the background, bc let's be honest they sometimes put a lot of instruments, and chaotic parts that can't be heard and procces the first time you hear it (the instruments). I love that hearing their music is like a travel to the same place that I know, but suddenly I see and pay more attention to things that always been there but never saw (also happen to me with deftones, and the beatles) Well, sorry for the loooong text, and for my crappy English, isn't my first language :c. Anyway ty for sharing your thoughts, you brought me a lot of good memories :)

I love long comments, I enjoyed reading this! I completely agree, I definitely picked up on new stuff listening to their albums multiple times, and I'm already planning on going back and listening to them some more. I think any good musician or band does that, with repeated listens you start to appreciate the music on a whole other level and the nuances start to really make themselves apparent. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for recommending Leprous to me in an earlier comment :)

How they aren't the biggest band in the world by now is astonishing to me. I got into them with Malina and haven't looked back since. The Congregation is their best to me though 🤘

Agreed, and "Contaminate Me" is possibly, to me, the best way to end Coal. You should look "Insahn" which is the guy who sing the guturals in the final track, and is also the Leprous vocalist brother. It has a very epic/dark sound, pretty similar to the heavier side of Deafheaven (maybe try with Celestial Violence) Thanks for sharing about this band, I'm liking a lot your content.

@@mollyesanborn Just to clarify, Ihsahn is not Einars (the singer) brother, but brother-in-law. Another fact, before Leprous became famous with their first line-up they used to play as the band for Ihsahn when he played live (since Ihsahn is just a solo project).
@radicalstanza3614
@radicalstanza3614 2 жыл бұрын
Ihsahn and Einar aren't actually relatives. One of them is married to the other's sister. Ihsahn is one of the iconic figures of the Norwegian black metal scene with the band Emperor, and his solo career is a gradually more progressive version of that black metal approach.

I enjoyed your take on their albums. I discovered the band about a year ago. You should check out Diablo Swing Orchestra. They are a swing metal band with a soprano lead singer. There is also a Post Metal instrumental band called Russian Circles. Their music has a lot of power and complexity.

@@mollyesanborn +1 to the top comment, you really should try Diablo swing orchestra, Leprous innovate and mutate strongly their song in every album, but with DSO every song they make is like a new subgenre, one of the few experimental complex avant-garde bands that at the same time can sound catchy and incredibly accesible for anyone.

I agree whole HEARDETLY about Tall Poppy Syndromes "He Will Kill Again" same with "White". That song is fucking INSANE! Coals "Coal" and "Contaminate Me" and the bonus track "Bury" is INSANE. Bilateral's "Acquired Taste" and Forced Entry" IS SICK. All these tracks slap live, sadly never heard Tall Poppy Syndromes album songs live. The Congregation with "Rewind" and "Slave" is FANTASTIC! I love "Stuck" "Leashes" and "The Weight of Disaster" are Great. Pitfalls has "Foreigner" "The Sky Is Red" "Below" and "At The Bottom" hit hard. On Aphelion "Out of Here" "Nighttime Disguise" "Silhouette" and "Castaway Angles" is pretty good. I think Nighttime Disguise was my favorite on the track because I honestly love hearing Einars harsh vocals.

Bilateral is the only album that's never really clicked with me. I'd put it in C too. Tall Poppy Syndrome has some tracks that I absolutely love, but also a lot that I may never be able to remember. I'd place it in B. For the rest I pretty much agree. I'd maybe consider putting Aphelion in to A because it unexpectedly brought out so much emotion in me. I'm a 24 year old with a beard, long hair and no singing voice. Not once in my life before Aphelion have I wished I could sing like an Angel. Then they released Castaway Angels and it's my go-to shower song. I try my very best to hit those notes, and sometimes (at least in my own head) it sounds like I'm hitting the same notes as Einar.

I've always liked heavier stuff, even before I got into metal a few years ago. I came across Leprous when Pitfalls had just released and listened to that on a whim, and I liked it. It wasn't the hard sound I preferred but it was unique. I put off other albums for a while because I'm always nervous about whether I'll like them or not, and listened to more metal bands for a while before deciding to listen to The Congregation, and I ended up loving it too. Then I enjoyed Malina, and Coal, and Bilateral, and Aphelion. So I've just accepted that whatever they're going for, I'll probably enjoy it. I do kind of hope the next album is closer to metal, though. I feel like there's untapped potential still with this band, because they have such a unique sound.
@mollyesanborn
@mollyesanborn 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they've got tons of potential for sure! Their vocalist alone is an absolute beast, his voice is somehow so serene and melodic but strong and powerful too. I'm really excited to see what they're going to do next and how they'll continue to evolve as a band.

If you like Leprous, as well as Tool and Deftones, you would probably LOVE Karnivool. They've gone on record to say Tool and Deftones are huge influences on them. They don't have many albums despite being around for so long unfortunately, but they're all pretty much perfect. If you want to check out one song, I highly highly recommend New Day from the album Sound Awake (and that album I think is their best one) :)

Curious how you put Bilateral on C, probably 90% Leprous fans would put it on S++ (from a prog metal perspective this album is a huge milestone of the genre, mixing modern tones with vintage sounds, very few other progmetal albums from the 2010's can top its flawless quality, but for a Leprous viewpoint, yeah, it sounds like a different band before they found their signature sound from Coal onwards) But I 100% agree with Coal being their best work to date. Aphelion is more playful than Pitfalls, but this one is more emotionaly crushing, so I prefer it slightly over their new album, it lacked a little those dramatic moments I love from them. And have you listened their bonus tracks? (Pixel, Bury, Root, Golden prayers, A prophecy to trust) those songs are pure gold.
@mollyesanborn
@mollyesanborn 2 жыл бұрын
That's interesting! Yeah, I can totally see that from Coal onward all of their albums have this very cohesive sound, their signature sound if you want to call it that. I'm gonna have to go back and give Bilateral another listen now after reading your comment. No, I haven't heard the bonus tracks! I'll check those out.
