I've been saying this for years. It's got some weird drawbacks, but it introduced gliding and underwater which are 2 HUGE parts of Mario Kart. It has easily the most underrated track roster, original and retro. People shit on it day and night but I will defend it till the day I day. And I grew up on DS and eventually Wii so I don't have nostalgia bias either. In fact, I completely forgot some of these tracks were in the game I haven't played it in so long

To be fair, most mario karts tend to make the mushroom cup finale a highlight track anyway(mario circuit 2, toad's factory, shy guy bazaar, thwomp ruins, probably also a ds track, I haven't played nor watched much of any ds so I can't really judge) so I'd consider that a common exception.

I think if Koopa Cape is to come into the Mario Kart 8 DLC, here’s how I think it should be. The half pipes of course should come back, and the general track should be the same. But then for the tunnel, I think for the first two laps it should be like the Wii where the tunnel isn’t flooded and keeps the electric buzzers and water stream. The final lap then should have the tunnel open up and it becomes flooded like in 7, and the fish come in to block you, and the sides of the opened tunnel become half pipes. I think this gives us the best of both worlds and keeps the track fresh and dynamic. What do you think?

The music for Rosalina's Ice world is at least an A for me. I love that low piano and the main melody and its one of the best ice theme songs. I also would put Maka Wuhu in A or S. Besides that, I agree with everything else especially the music for rock rock mountain which is an underrated banger.

I always like Wario's Shipyard/Galleon cuz its like the only Wario track so far that actually is like based on Wario Land. The track's music isn't the only reference to it. The overall ship yard gives it a pirate theme which Wario Land 1 had a pirate theme with the main enemies being a gang of pirates and one world is actually a pirate ship. The sign of Wario above the tunnel before the glider ramp he's actually wearing a Viking helmet which is an actual power up from the game.

If there's ome thing MK7 got right, it's the track themes. These are so unique and I wish they did this with DS. I think there was potential with the Desert Hills track in DS. Trying to go for a Mario 3 desert theme with the pink pipes and the sun. I think they should have had a section where the pink pipes were a part where you could drive on. Maybe adding some of those walking blocks as a hazard

I don't get people complaining about the underwater stuff in MK7 & 8 saying it "doesn't add much" when it's mainly just meant to be thematic thing, having tracks partially or fully set in the water when in previous games most water is purely a hazard, it allows for more theming even if it doesn't change the gameplay much

In regards to the N64 Koopa Beach shortcut, they actually nerfed it quite a bit in this version. In the original version of the course, the shortcut goes through much more of the mountain and bypasses a lot more of the track. Comparatively 7's much less impactful, but it's also easier to pull off. Jumping into the cave on N64 tended to be much trickier so it gave more of an advantage if you did pull it off. Similarly, the train in Kalimari Desert was made a bit less of a hassle. The number of coaches was cut down from 5 to 3, and the timing of the two trains was altered. Originally, the course and the trains were laid out in such a way that if you caught the train at the first crossing, you were basically guaranteed to catch it at the second too. Meaning, if you didn't beat the train either time, but other racers did, they would get massively ahead. In 7, the distance between each train was tweaked, so this doesn't happen. It's also more likely that if someone beat the first train and got ahead, they'd still be slowed with the second, resulting in not as much distance being gained. I agree about your point with the item system though, I think MK64's system was a bit more forgiving in that you could still get something useful in 2nd if that scenario would happen.

1:08:13 in the original n64 version of the track the train really isnt an issue lol, it goes too quick for you to stop in your tracks and let the people ahead of you get far it mostly acts as a huge green shell if you dont slow down in time and end up ramming into it, even then is barely shows up while your racing tbh. In my eyes Kalimari Desert is mostly just a chill end track for the mushroom cup

One thing that the Tour version of Koopa Cape does better with the underwater segment that 7 is that they added a half-pipe so you jump out of the water for a speed boost. And since Maple Treeway and Merry Mountain brought back the half-pipes and this track is 100% returning for 8 Deluxe, they're defiantly including the underwater half-pipe.

You hit the nail on the head with your DK Jungle explanation. In a game with a graveyard of ships, a bright bazaar against a night sky, and a maze of pipes, rushing water, and piranha plants, DK Jungle really stands out as uninspired, especially considering it's in the Special Cup. A factor that I always think about when looking at retro tracks is the game physics comparison. Take Dino Dino World. Overall, the track is mostly the same and I don't think the touches really do much to change the track. But the DD physics push the boundaries of the track way further than the 3DS one can. (Hense why people don't remember this MK much because its physics engine is so bland). On the other hand, Airship Fortress is already great on its own on the DS but I think the 3DS addition of coins makes this track more interesting. Plus the type of items in the 3ds work better for this track. I feel this factor wasn't accounted for within the DS ranking. Sure the retro tracks are a bit bland but mechanically, they fit the DS so well since the game focusses a lot on snaking and pushing players to master it. So they picked tracks that were more time trial like to make up for it. It's why Figure 8 is kind of boring, they want you to think of how to get through the track faster and make use of the best option available, mini boosts

i think the problem with the train in kalimari desert that you were trying to get at is that it's an obstacle that's not the fault of the player if it negatively affects them, like in coconut mall you can go around the cars and if you hit one that's your fault, but in kalimari if the train happens to be there when you're there now you just lost 5 seconds and without a mushroom there's nothing you could've done about it

I would say that Kalamari desert really hit it's prime thanks to Tour/8. The track becomes more interesting (this comes from a desert track enjoyer) thanks to the changes in 8 and the music is just spectacular with the trumpets making it WAAAAY more western than just the flute

Maple Treeway without the rope bridge feels wrong. For one thing, theming. The whole track is themed around exploring a treehouse, so a rope bridge makes perfect sense as a way for people to get up there. How do they get up there in the newer versions if they're not a car that can drive through the cannon? Besides, the precarious ropes swinging in the wind actually made it feel high up when driving back down. The glider section doesn't have the same effect, since there's no sense you might fall when you can fly. Secondly, it's a nice hazard that doubles as a reward for skillful driving. If you're not careful, then repeatedly being bounced up into the air can cause you to lose control and fall off. On the other hand, with good timing you can get several trick boosts from it. It's like the music notes in Music Park, or the thwomps in the SNES Rainbow Road. It just isn't the same without it, and it's absence is purely for the sake of inserting the obligatory glider section into a MK7 track.

When you were rating DK Jungle, it was as if you weren't judging its quality based on what was there, but instead judging it on what wasn't there. Yes, a track based on one of the other areas of DKC Returns, like the factory, mines or cliffs, would be pretty cool. But "DK Jungle" shouldn't be marked down just because it's not "DK Factory" or "DK Mines". Additionally, you mentioned how it felt redundant due to there already being a lot of DK nature tracks, which is fair, but may I remind you that every single Mario Kart added at least two new circuit or circuit-like tracks (one of which always being a Mario Circuit), a Bowser Castle and a Rainbow Road. Yet those tracks weren't getting marked down for being redundant. Idk, it just felt like you were overly harsh on the mere concept of the track, despite the same criticisms you mentioned being absent when judging other jungle tracks or tracks with overdone themes.

i dont necessarily dislike reused themes and dont tend to judge too harshly on that alone. In the case of DK Jungle tho, they got the devs of DKCR to help with the track. If you were gonna go through the bother of getting the devs and making the track specifically themed after DKCR, they had much better, more original options. I put the other tracks that are clear inspirations to a game (Hyrule Circuit, Excitebike Arena) at the same level of scrutiny and they nail the homage to their home game/series while DK Jungle does not imo

I remember playing mk ds on my sister's ds when i was a kid and everytime i played Waluigi Pinball i really got excited like, wow, im in a pinball, look, at the right hand from the line there is like the spring that launches the balls,WOW.
