Ranking Every Mario Kart Item!

Today I’m ranking all 46 Items throughout the entire Mario Kart series! To do so, I ranked every item based on 3 factors: how fun it is, how powerful it is, and how happy I’d be to pull it from an item box. Hope you enjoy!

Boo is good at ballancing out bullet bills, keeping players from holding it for too long. Also, it defends against shells and lightning.

That almost never happens in practice though, the Boo only pulls items from racers ahead of them, and Bullet Bills are usually pulled in the bottom spots/far away from 1st, while Boos are usually pulled in the 2nd to mid spots. Most of the time when you lose a Bullet Bill it's because you were hit by Lightning, which leads to you losing all items. Boos are useful for dodging items like lightning, and trying to steal one of the frontrunners' items to leave them open.

Plus, it's often overlooked the the item you get from a boo is taken from another player. So those three mushrooms you got which rocketed you from 8th to 3rd would have rocketed someone else from 7th to 1st, leaving you in the dust. Couple this with a shock dodge, and you have a S tier item on your hands. This list definitely didn't give the boo enough credit!

A few comments: Boo and Mega Mushroom DESERVED to be higher, as both can do what a star does. If you were to focus primarily on 8 Deluxe, yeah, the Boo doesn't let you go off-road. However, in 64 and DS, the Boo is a star, but better. Plus, with the Boo, you have a chance of stealing a Star. I can understand the Fake Item Box being low, but it looks near identical to an item box in some games (64 and DS). Also, there is no feasible way a SINGLE MUSHROOM ranks higher than A BULLET BILL.

Not to mention that the Megabanana isn’t just your average amped up banana: it blocks small items, it clogs narrow roads, it inflicts a larger slip-up time. How is it lower than the Bowser shell? It was THE defensive item in Double Dash.

As a consistent Tour player, the Banana Barrels and Bubble are the worst items in that game by far and I avoid using racers that have them. The Banana Barrels only shoot Bananas in front of you, and what you said about throwing Bob-ombs in front of you applies like 20-fold here since you're littering the track with Bananas and can easily slip on any of them, all while the barrels keep shooting. Then the Bubble is just plain awful. You completely lose control of your kart, and you move so slow that you might as well just mash to break it and you'll be better off. And being able to do that even wasn't possible until the 3.0.0 update! Luckily only a handful of characters get these items, with (currently) only Diddy Kong and Funky Kong getting the Banana Barrels, and Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, Baby Rosalina, Lemmy, and the Cheep Cheep and Lemmy Mii Racing Suits having the Bubble

Blooper is very helpful in Mario Kart DS single player, since it slows down CPUs by making them Zig zag around, but that really doesn't make it good in general, especially in later games where that behaviour is removed

The coin is useful as a balancing item in 8DX, lowering the chance of 1st place from getting two defensive items with the double item slots. In the Wii You version it is pretty useless.

Nothing about the banana bunch from 64? It's 5 bananas in a trail behind you, meaning you have protection from 5 items in a row. It's REALLY good, and is one of the best defensive items in the franchise.

I’ll just say that he’s criminally underselling the Giant Banana. If you put it on narrow roads, it clogs up that thing to the point no one without a star goes through without slipping hard and it also serves to fend off most of the grounded items. Also Thundercloud deserves last place.

Thundercloud is so fun to get, going off road and rushing people in order to give them the cloud right before it expires… Sure you might be shrunk if you wait too long but realistically you’d have to be pretty bad to not hit anyone and get shrunk because of the pretty generous timer that this thing gives you.

Boo should be higher, you make yourself invincible against almost anything, including the blue shell and at the same time you can get an item and it can be a fun little gamble of what item you’re going to get. The boo has helped me dodge two blue shells in one race in some occasions.

Yes, in MK8 it does. I would argue in games without a bottom screen map it is a hindrance sometimes if you can't see the items on the road or trailed by opponents, and then crash into them

The Lightning’s gotta be my most despised item in the entire series. Unless everyone else is crammed closely together, then it’s borderline worthless and it’s the definition of anti-fun when you’re on the receiving end; driving at a snail’s pace for what feels like 30 seconds instantly kills the momentum of a race. If it was down to me, I’d just replace with a modified POW Block that instantly drops everyone’s items to the ground, but all will drive on as usual.

The tannoki leaf is the most underrated item ever it protects you from bananas red shells and green shells plus it can help you stay in the air longer it’s not the best item in the game but it does what it’s job well people just compare it to op items and call it bad

It cause your not MLG enough to do it correctly. 2:44 If you throw the bomb backwards, 1 second before a red shell hits you, the shell won’t have enough time to redirect towards you and will give you enough time to move form the blast zone after the shell detonates the bomb. (Easier with a higher CC)
