As a tigers fan I’d like to think the front office signed Boyd and Lorenzen in hopes that the young rotation is back at full strength by June after all the injuries, then the veterans can go to the bullpen for long relief. If that pans out and Tork/Greene play to their potential with the AL central being bad the tigers might be able to win 70 games this season

May be biased here, but having the Blue Jays above the Mariners doesn't make sense. The M's took the Jays to the wood shed in the playoffs and the season series wasn't all that close either. Plus, they likely have a top 5 rotation in baseball. Same old song and dance with the Jays year in and year out lol
@ryangale3757
@ryangale3757 Жыл бұрын
The problem with the Blue Jays is that they are perennial underperformers; every year for the past 3 years, they on paper have seemed like major contenders, but they never end up living up to those expectations. They did play better after Schneider took over for Montoyo, but then they got their butts kicked in the playoffs again, so until I see them actually have a season up to their expectations, I can't expect too much out of them.

It's realistic. The Dodgers in a full 162 game season haven't done much in the playoffs, especially when you consider the fact they've been one of, if not the best, regular season teams every year for a while now. Sorry to say, but the Dodgers actually need to prove themselves as contenders. Just having a good roster and great regular seasons just to get spanked in the playoffs early doesn't make you an actual contender.
@matthewcollins8602

The Braves have a DH with alternate catching options. If Ozuna keeps hitting then he's a DH as well. At shortstop it's not really difficult to replace Dansby Swanson to be honest. I love Swansons defense but at the plate he still consistently swings at balls a foot off the plate for long periods of time and then gets on a hot streak before taking swings like a little league player again. Replacing Freeman was a big deal and the Braves did so and became better. Swanson isn't anywhere near the player of Freeman.

@Aaron Rogers exactly and the defense is one of the easiest things to replace in the game. With the defense of the Braves infield consisting of Austin Riley, Ozzie Albies, & Matt Olson it's an even easier replacement to make. The Braves have more flexibility than most when it comes to finding their idea of a perfect replacement for anyone they let go.

@Aaron Rogers physically he's replaced Freeman indeed though. I liked the move then and still do. Olson is just a better fit than Freeman because of age, grew up a Braves fan, & he's better in several areas than Freeman. Not a knock on Freeman but I prefer Olson's power and defense personally. The Braves front office made the right call.

Mariners regressing? Mitch Haniger was injured all season last year so Teoscar Hernandez is a huge upgrade at RF. We get a full season of Luis Castillo and a more experienced Gilbert/Kirby. Adam Frazier wasn’t very good for us last year either so getting Kolten Wong is a considerable upgrade. Also Julio is only going to get better. I believe a few Astros players also said that they were pretty confident that whoever won the series between the Mariners and the Astros was going to win the whole thing which is major props from a division rival.

Were the Mariners not contenders last year? Obviously their lineup wasn’t elite but it didn’t seem to matter in the the postseason. They absolutely stomped the Blue Jays, and (despite losing all 3 games) they were neck and neck with the Astros. I think they pretty clearly make it to the World Series if a few things go differently against the Astros, and to me that’s a contender. So why would a better version of that team not be a contender as well?

The Orioles certainly have had most everything go right with them this year, with just 25 games to go and being 35 games above 500, placing them as a bonfire pennant contender that can compete with the elite tier (Braves, Dodgers, Rays, Mariners IMO). The Bautista injury puts a big question mark on an October appearance. Boston is one of the few "Maybe?" teams that basically has lived up to their expectations, and they remain on the fringe of Wild Card contention. Miami is probably also in that same "Maybe?" tier, and it wouldn't shock me if they sneak in just like the NBA and NHL teams did last spring. I'd also place the D-Backs in that "Maybe?" tier as well. Sure, the Padres and Yankees have been big busts, but I'd place them in that same tier, which really should be full of teams around .500. The Padres are 5th in run differential in the NL, and the Yankees have big spoiler potential that just happens to play in a hot division that sadly was gagged with numerous injuries, with a season-ending concussion to Rizzo being the latest. They recently swept the Astros in Houston, so they definitely still can beat you on any given day.

Glad to see an honest Pads fan. Did the Dodgers get "worse" this off-season and the Pads better? Yes. But Marc is forgetting the Dodgers won 111 games and the division by 22 games last year. That gap doesn't magically dissappear because Trea Turner leaves. We replaced JT with JD, actually have a deeper and more reliable rotation this year, not relying on fragile guys like Heaney and company, Outman in all likelihood will get the bulk of CF starts and could very well be better than Bellinger for $18M less. Oh and our bullpen is still mostly intact. And we have insane depth through the 40 man roster and going into our Minor League system. He's right, on paper the Padres, at least their lineup, is still better. But they lack depth if one of their big names goes down or underperforms. Their rotation certainly isn't better IMO.
@TheLuiscelaya
@TheLuiscelaya Жыл бұрын
@@MrBlake14 That’s the big thing that the Dodgers have above almost any other team: depth. Especially in the minors, where they have a lot of guys who can come up and make an impact in the majors. I don’t think they’ll win 100 games but it’s gonna be dogfight till the end for the division
@MrBlake14
@MrBlake14 Жыл бұрын
@@TheLuiscelaya Oh it'll definitely be more competitive this year. I think both the Dodgers and Padres could/should win 95-100 games each. I just am somewhat bewildered at all these baseball talking heads thinking the Dodgers are 20+ losses worse for losing ONE player. Whenever people mention our off-season losses, its like...and? JD Martinez replaces JT at DH and likely hits much better. Outman, and whoever else fills in at CF, likely outperforms Belli. Syndegaard and May replace Heaney and Anderson. Pepiot has #3 upside, and is showing it this Spring. Our bullpen remained intact. Muncy looked like old Muncy in the second half after getting g healthy. And Vargas is a ROTY frontrunner going into this season. I just don't understand the weird hate. Like Marc saying May hasnt shown he can be dominant? Ummm....did we forget his pre TJS performance? He was ELECTRIC! He will be fully healthy this year and will probably slide into that #2 spot in the rotation. This team is still VERY GOOD.

As a Yankee fan, I got to say, Yankees are not S tier. It's the same lineup that didn't do a damn thing against the Astros in the ALCS plus (hopefully) Volpe. They need him to provide a spark with his power and with his speed. The lineup is too dependent on Aaron Judge. You can't revolve a major league lineup around 1 guy. There's no way you can guarantee he'll come up in a big spot. Stanton can be good but he goes into long cold spells where he loses it and he's almost guaranteed to spend at least some time on the IL. Aaron Hicks.....looks awful. Like, he can't even field routine fly balls. I don't know what to do with him. Josh Donaldson is hitting home runs right now in spring training--who cares? Let's see how he's hitting when the games count. 3/5s of their starting rotation is starting the season on the IL and they don't have the depth to cover it. They traded their starting pitching depth away to acquire Frankie Months who is about as useful as a Pancho in a desert. Surprisingly, the strength of this team could be the bullpen. Yes, Trivino and Kahnle are on the IL to start the season but Clay Holmes looks right as the closer, Jonny Lasagna has elite stuff and Michael King looks like an absolute stud. I just hope they don't get burnt out early on because I don't see German, Schmidt and whoever the 5th starter is going to be going deep into games. I put them down in Post Season Team. I could see them getting one of the wild card spots this season.
