Finally someone who doesn’t default to sly 2 at the top of the list. In my opinion 3 is the clear climax of the series in terms of gameplay, story, sound design. I think it’s pretty much a perfect game.

Oh I absolutely agree. Yes I do agree that the story and writing is more lacking compared to the OG trilogy, but for a sequel released eight years after the third game, it could have turned out so much worse (like Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier)

In my opinions: As Storyline and Plots: Sly3>Sly2>Sly>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Sly4 As Gamplay and Missions: Sly2>Sly3>Sly4>Sly1. As Game Development: Sly2>Sly1>Sly4>Sly3. As Background maps design: Sly4>Sly2=Sly3>Sly1. As animation cutscenes: Sly1 Anime Version>Sly2=Sly3>Sly4>Sly Comic Version. So I guess: Sly2>Sly3>Sly4>Sly1. But I would said Sly1>Sly4 cause it is the reason that start the series and it realesed in 2002 and that time the game critics considered it is one of the best of 2002 and Sly4 have a great design maps but it made in 2013 which mean a better engine that was not included in 2002 and in the end Sly4 didn't give us Sly5 unlike Sly1 that gave us the trilogy.

"They will never be another Sly Cooper" but... we really need another Sly Cooper? The trilogy story is excellent, the fourth entry just sucked, the trilogy it's so well done that reminds me of Avatar TLA, it's the same debate with the three books, we really need a fourth book? No. no really. Same here with Sly imho. Great video you made me think and post a non-sarcastic comment well done.

Thieves in Time definitely has some bad writing and cutscenes but… man it really felt like a love letter to fans. Like we’re talking about a C-tier game development studio who went all-out trying to make a game as polished and content-rich as they could muster. For all of its faults, it’s got a ton of heart to it that a studio like High Impact Games wouldn’t have bothered with

The point of 3 is that letting the past consume you is a bad thing. Octavia wanting to return the old ways of opera by reporting to terrorism. Penelope refusing to move on from the Black Baron disguise because of her lies and wanting to remain a celebrity. Tsao wanting to keep his family line strong by resorting to kidnapping and literal black magic with the Panda King nearly letting his hatred of Sly and his past actions keep him from saving his only daughter. Blood Bath Bay as a whole I'd a place that refused to move on from piracy even when it is no longer truly profitable or noteworthy. And the culmination of it all:Dr. M whose desire for the Cooper Vault's gold and treasure led him to waste decades of his life trying to crack into it and trying to murder his comrades son.

Literally the only reason people shit so much on Sly 4 is because of its borderline 1$ fanfic-level writing and story, as well as the characters. Behind all that nightmarish, nauseating garbage lies a game that plays very well, has hours worth of collectibles, the best unlockables in my opinion, and overall a very fun game to play. The tanking framerates are a massive L though

I personally prefer Sly 2 over Sly 3, and it always comes back to the levels. Sly 2 has so many memorable hub levels to me, especially with how the story moments caused a shifts in the hubs. I played both games probably 4 years still some of the Sly 2 levels stick in my mind while I genuinely don’t remember any of the Sly 3 levels being exciting. Paris is admittedly the weakest level although it’s the first one and doesn’t have a second stage. Still it had some interesting missions where you scour the rooftops with Nala and sneak through the alleyways following Dimitri. Rajan’s palace continues the spy theme as you infiltrate Rajan’s party as well as being able to access the guest house while still dodging his goons in the streets. While I agree the vertical segments of the Spice temple is a curse upon humanity it’s a great shift in tone as you go from the lavish wealth Rajan showed on the surface to seeing his grimy crime syndicate behind the veil and obviously it has the great twist during the fight. I think the Contessa’s levels are easily the best in the series and most memorable. The bleak beginning where everyone is behind bars and Bentley has to try to rebuild his team piece by piece whilst dealing with the fucking minefield that is the Contessa’s concentration camp. Then once the gang is back together you mount the offensive on the Castle juxtaposed alongside the police launching their own offensive. I think the first Jean Bison level with the trains was a good idea, navigating the massive expanse whilst using the trains and dodging Carmelita who is now on the scene. The 2nd half in the lumber camp was a bit dull and was punctuated with too many mini-games for my taste. Sadly Arpeggio’s flying bullshit was a bit disappointing of an end but I did enjoy the twist ending with Nala. Compared to Sly 3 I felt the levels both in design and intrigue were every flat as they focused more on internal segments, which I don’t think are inherently bad I just feel like the hubs suffered a lot. Venice was just bland to look at even back then. The australia map felt so small and constricted, again with a lot more out of hub segments (as well as that Giant Carmelita segment which turned me into a man). The black baron level was my favourite although I think it was too big for its own good. Once you travel far into the map it becomes very bland, especially around the aircraft hangers. The china map had some of the best missions so I can’t fault it too much although the villain was not that good IMO. Bruh the entire pirate episode was forgettable. Cannot fault the overarching story of Sly 3 as well as the Cooper Cave levels and segments. They feel so bleak at the beginning when you seem like you’re fucked and then ascend into great set pieces and the platforming gold of the inner cave. Obviously Robo-Bentley is such an improvement from Sly 2 as well as Murray actually being useful, and the increased group is cool although a lot of characters fell to the wayside IMO. Great video as always keep it up hummie.

What really killed Sly 3 for me is the lack of bottles to collect, yeah this has been discussed before but the thing that makes it bad is because they insisted on keeping the open world aspect of the second game..minus any of the exploration. So you have an open world filled with large spaces of literally NOTHING.

I'm actually surprised you rated Sly 3 higher than 2. I've always felt the other way around. But honestly... You made me realize that even though I feel Clockwerk is the heart of what made the franchise's identity so iconic and interesting, Sly 3 definitely does a lot to make the game design better as well as make a more unique story. Granted I feel like 3 felt a bit more gimmicky and hollow without clue bottles to hunt down for secret moves or hoarding treasures, but it makes a better story experience. I still stand by Sly 2 being better in general but... You made me feel like I didn't give 3 enough credit. I appreciate that.

Here's my ranking: 4. Sly 1 - A great plaformer that lacks the stealth and free-roaming nature of it's sequels. Also feels kinda shallow and lacking in the story and character department. Its fine for what it is, it just doesn't have that same level of depth or character development that would be present in the games afterwards. It does lay a strong foundation of what was to come with how creative and innovative it was, and its consistently enjoyable throughout. 3. Sly 4 - Yes, I think 4 is a damn great game, including it's writing, don't @ me. Criminally overhated and deserves much more credit than it gets by at least some people. Hub worlds felt more alive and dense than ever. Overall gameplay was generally just as fun as the previous games, with costumes, Sly's ancestors, and some restructuring of level progression making for a fresh and unique experience. Bottles made a return and were actually tricky to find. Boss fights are definitely some of the best in the series (with exception of the final boss, of course). The graphics and overall style were beautiful and felt like a natural evolution of the old PS2 style (aside from a few awkward bits here and there like Carmelita's skirt and torso). Even the writing, while not perfect, was about what I would want and expect from a Sly game; that being, a fun adventure with legitimate personal and emotional stakes and character development, fun and lovable characters and interactions, and just an overall sense of wonder, epicness, and progression. 2. Sly 2 - A fan favourite, and reasonably so. The game completely restructured the levels and progression of the first game to resemble more that of a stealth and open world game, with missions and actual steath being incorporated into the levels and game design. The minigames were (with exception of that shitty tank mission) consistently fun and engaging throughout, boss fights were good (the Bison fight in particular being a standout due to it's creativity), additional playable characters like Bentley and Murray play a pivitol role in gameplay this time around, buying abilities throughout the course of the game, as well as majorly improving the story and characters from the previous game. The only things that hold it back are that you often have to grind like hell if you want to get a particular gadget or ability or all of them, making fighting enemies and breaking objects somewhat of a chore to get through. The game's length lasts a good bit too long for me, and level design, while still great overall, has some obnoxious verticality and ways of bypassing certain areas that seem so needlessly obtuse and convoluted. Also, what was Neyla's motivation for why she was doing what she was doing? I'm not even being rhetorical here, I genuinely want to know. Other than all that though, Sly 2 is an awesome game that overall deserves the praise it gets. Even if I think it's somewhat excessive in comparison to some of the other games in the series. 1. Sly 3 - For me, this is the coup de grâce. Sly 3 is just a fantastic game that excels in what it sets out to do. Every minigame and mission ranges from "pretty cool" to "this is why I love games as a form of entertainment more than any other". Nothing in this game ever feels like it gets in the way of your fun. The fact that you can now replay jobs from this game with certain conditions already makes this game more replayable and worth coming back to than Sly 2. The Cooper Vault level is a major standout in platforming and pacing, as the game presents and throws every challenge and obstacle it can at you through a long stretch of time, as you go through the vault seeing every Cooper ancestor and going through their history. The story and characters are, without a doubt, the best in the series in my mind. With the most personal and emotional stakes in the series, the most fun, interesting, and memorable character interactions, as well as some legitimately sweet and heartfelt moments here and there. Penelope espeically being my favourite character, not just of this game, but the entire series. Also, that argument between General Tsao and the Panda King's daughter while you enter that building as Bentley wearing a disguise is legitimately disturbing, and a part of me can't believe it actually made it into the game. Side note, you know all this shit going on with certain media involving "subverting expections"? (The Last Jedi, GoT S8, TLOU II) Well, Sly 3 already understood that better than those pieces of crap with Penelope, being kidnapped by Captain LeFwee, but by the end of the level, she is able to save herself after a good attempt by Bentley and his friends, with a swordfight where you take control and kick his ass. I was already partial to Penelope up to that point, but that moment cemented Penelope as my favourite character in the franchise. Now, THAT is how you subvert expectations. 😂 My only real issues with the game are that I think it's too short. The game was already pretty long as is, but it felt like it needed one more chapter to make it the perfect length. Also, Sly 3 sort of has the opposite problem where you have so many gadgets and abilities to buy at once, that you miss out on a significant portion of them before the game's over. Although, this does midigate tedious grinding, so that's a plus. Another thing is the fact that bottles are now gone in this game, which leaves me mixed. On one hand, it allows you to solely focus on the mission, without having to worry about missing that last couple that has your mind scratching on where they are and just ending up wasting your time, but on the other hand, it makes the levels less replayable in a way, not giving you much of an incentive in exploring them once you're done. Personally, I'm fine with it, but I could get why someone could be let down by that. Overall, these are just an incredible series of games that have earned the hearts and minds of the people who played them. They are some of the most nostalgically cherished and beloved gaming franchises of all-time, and for good reason. These games, and others like it, show what it means for a game to make the most out of this medium. They show that if given the right execution, you can have it all. That you *can* indeed have your cake, and eat it too. Games like this are much more interesting when they're not bound by whatever narrow-minded philosophy and mindset that is imposed by some pretentious, unimaginative hack critic or what have you getting in the way.

One thing that I think is important to mention about the stories of 2 and 3, is that all the levels of 2 were in someway related to each other. The klaww gang really feels like a cohesive unit, they even interact with each other. While the levels of 3 are completely unrelated to each other and the villains don't even know about each other

I was just about to get back into these games and couldn't remember if my nostalgia was getting the best of me or not. Every review I saw online before this one had 3 as the lowest or 2nd lowest of the 4 main entries, and I was appalled! Now that you've jogged my memory, I'm even more sure that 3 improved on 2 in pretty much every way, 2 is still amazing, 1 was innovative for its time, and I actually never played 4 (or knew it existed) but I might soon. I used to have the Sky 2 demo disc that my Mom surprised me with when I was a kid. I’d play the Dimitri level over and over (it was the only level) because it was so fun and the music was a banger 🔥 duh duh dada duh duhh duhnuhhnuh lmao. We didn’t have a lot of money and I never got around to buying the full game... so I just recently downloaded the first in the franchise on my PS Vita and have been playing it and loving every minute of it. I miss games like this. Wish they had these kind of games these days. If kids played this stuff, they would honestly have better critical thinking skills and improved hand-eye coordination. It’s extremely fun, yet every mission/world feels very much so a challenge - and they remain extremely rewarding to complete. The story is excellent as well... With all of the fun I got out of that demo disc I felt that it warranted me to finally give it the respect it deserves and play the whole franchise. I plan on going through each game in order... currently on the voodoo crocodile lady level on the first game. 🙏🏼😊

Im so happy to see other people enjoy the game that introduced me to gaming A story real quick...i played sly 1 on my cousin's ps2 because i didnt have any console, i saved money to buy sly 1 but without the ps2 lol i thought i could play it on a DVD 🤣 so back to saving money again i got a horrible ps2 but i loved every moment of that game. i got so excited when i found out there were 2 sequels... I can say i ought a big part of my life as an adult to sly cooper

I wholeheartedly agree with Sly 3 over Sly 2, especially replayability-wise. Sly 2 levels are bit too long, and Sly 3 platforming and story is refined!

If sly cooper would have ended better then ending up with sly in Egypt then thieves in time would have been a better game, I still enjoyed playing it a lot

I would’ve liked Sly 3 just as much as 2 if they didn’t get rid of the green bottles…thats legit the only thing they did wrong.
