The fact that Kenny is crying because he never got to truly experience the luxury of having KFC because cartman ruined it by eating the skins is probably the biggest betrayals in south park, especially with the fact that kenny is so poor and cartman literally gets to eat that shit nearly 24/7 just makes it even worse and really justifies the boys ignoring eric

For the episode "free hat", the guy that people want free is totally fictional. He was arrested for murdering 23 infants, but the south park citizens think that the infants attacked him first (somehow) and he had to kill them in self defense.

I think Britney’s New Look is the exact opposite of mean spirited towards her. The entire episode is about how horribly she’s treated despite just being a woman who wants to live her life and be with her family. It’s a VERY sympathetic episode, even though it’s quite disturbing to watch.

im always dissatisfied with SP rankings because its such a multifacted show that one episode could be great or terrible based on what lenses youre looking at it through. many people ignore the historical social context of what happened around the time of these episodes and how they acted as the writers commentary on how the public or corporations were acting. And the Britney episodes was a warning, directly saying it was our fault and that when we normalize treating celebrities like /that/ it becomes a pattern to be self perpetuated over and over. which in its self, makes it a decently deep episode tackling a very normalized culture in hollywood. The show runs off of, lets take something you can relate to doing, and twist it until you almost feel complicit in cr@ck b@by b@sketball too.

For "The F Word" episode I think being American really helps sell it. With the huge biker scene here, it's incredibly relatable and almost cathartic. There is NOTHING more annoying when you're walking in a small, peaceful town and you get bombarded by insanely loud obnoxious motorcycles. It's one of my favorite episodes just for that reason.

Used to live in a historic district, very quiet, no one really knew about it, buildings from the 17/1800s, horse buggies, you get it. Every summer there was one day where our town was just FLOODED with bikers. We have our own bikers, they're nice folks, but these dudes were sloppy, mean, loud, arrogant and I heard they didn't tip when they stopped to eat. The town was a sundown town and I've seen old folks and our amish population be nicer to immigrant transplants and new POC families moving in than they were to this roaming band of Harley assholes. It's so true it HURTS.

I am glad that you included the information of Isaac's son coming out with everything. The stipulation that Isaac wanted to leave the show was just ridiculous, and I can't imagine how Matt and Trey felt during that time knowing that a friend was wiling to leave after the scientology episode. It was a very sad situation. I always did wonder what their opinions were after everything came out though and how they felt knowing that it really wasn't Isaac's doing.

When Kenny’s mom says 52nd, it actually is technically correct. He died twice in the movie-once when he lit the fart on fire (50), and when he wished everything back to normal (51). That would make him being born again during that S4 episode number 52.

Man I didn’t realise how much of a turning point season 5 is. Cartman becoming evil, butters becoming more relevant, Kenny being killed off, and the sudden increase in quality
@zeroattentiongaming820 Жыл бұрын
Matt and Trey themselves have highlighted that Scott Tenorman was the exact point where they made the shift from Cartman being a dumb asshole to him being outright evil. Before that episode, they saw him as just a dumb, angry fat kid, just as often the victim as villain and his worst actions coming from ignorance of what he's actually doing or saying. After it, he became the monster we all know and love, with most bad things that happen to him being deserved pay back for his cruel actions and him being fully aware of what he's doing 95% of the time Beyond that, it was where the series really found itself. Moving beyond the random and overly crude nature of the first 3 seasons and building off the 4th's increase in overall quality. It's the start of the series being consistently great, compared to the hit and miss nature of what cane before (though as Mark noted, a lot of the earlier stuff worked better in the context of when it released than it does today)

54:32 So the reason why this episode feels so weird and janky is... because it is. The main female voice actress for South Park, Mary Kay Bergman, killed herself during or right before production of that episode. Matt and Trey were so shook up and under such a time crunch that they simply couldn't handle trying to immediately re-cast a new lead female voice actress while also producing the episode, so they hastily wrote a new episode that wouldn't require any female VO work. This gave them time to deal with the situation emotionally and to start throwing out feelers to find a replacement. But this is why in the few moments that they show any women, they are silent and responding non-verbally, and the one woman with any spoken lines (the lady that brought more of the liquor) was voiced by one of the guys doing a cartoony lady voice. This is also why the episode explicitly was about all of the _men_ in town going off and having their own adventure, so that they could get all the male characters away from the women to avoid awkwardly writing the whole story around all the women being silent for no reason. If you don't know, South Park, up until recent seasons, was always produced on the fly while the season was airing. When an episode airs, they start working on the next episode right away. I think I've heard that they generally have an episode or two that they produce during their down time that aren't about current events that they can drop if they get in a pinch, if nothing in the news that's episode-worthy happens, or if they just need a break, but generally every episode is written, recorded, and animated in a week, as the season is airing. The 9/11 episode is the quintessential example of this, where that episode aired 2 or 3 _days_ after 9/11 happened. This is why South Park used to have a split season schedule, because the staff would basically be working 24/7 when a season was airing and they just couldn't do that for a full season without killing themselves. And they moved away from that kind of schedule because Matt and Trey admitted that they're just getting too old and worn out to keep up with that kind of brutal work schedule, and it was keeping them away from their families too much. There's also the fact that with the internet becoming what it is, now, it's no longer a super unique thing to be able to respond to current events immediately like it was during South Park's heyday. So that's why a VA dying in the middle of production is so catastrophic for production. They frankly do not have any time to react to something like that happening. The fact that South Park has had so few, if any, interruptions in their schedule is fucking incredible, considering how it was made for so long.
@chancedream15837 ай бұрын
South Park still made episodes in 6 days up until the pandemic started in 2020 which caused them to make an new episode or special in a month or two but I think since they're back to doing regular seasons of the show, they went back to do the episodes in 6 days now.

I absolutely adore your perspective, it's so awesome to hear a show so inherently, unabashedly American like South Park be talked about by a non-American. It's interesting hearing some episodes be talked about without the proper context. No mention of the R. Kelly song in Trapped in the Closet, calling Token "Tolkien". It's so pure and wonderful, like an alien from another galaxy trying to explain what a dolphin is at first glance. EDIT: And now the egg is on MY face because I stopped watching around season 15 and didn't know that Token was pseudo-retconned into Tolkien! Good stuff.

I mean seeing as they usually rip on globally celebrities it's pretty universal to the English speaking world. Think the first episode I just shrugged and said "must be some American local news" was the George Zimmerman episode, and even without it the world war z parody made it entertaining without understanding the overarching reference
@danielmacpherson8487 Жыл бұрын
@@maroonstarsface part of it is when you watch it keep in mind, I'm around the same age as Mark and I can say when I was watching South Park as a wain I didn't get the vast majority of the references that were about America, almost anything to do with race or politics is entirely foreign to how we do things in the UK. I imagine it's similar to how Americans would watch the Inbetweeners. you understand what's going on perfectly fine, but you don't understand the subtext because it's so linked to a specific culture you're not tuned into.

Tone policing is lame, but it’s good to know the context at least.
@RyanKaufman Жыл бұрын
@@ciphermitarai It's not tone policing it's just them deciding they don't like someone. If the episode(s) with her were about her tone or how she needs to fix it then sure, or if they disagreed with her only because of her tone then also sure. But they agree with her, they just think she's shitty -- which she is. Someone being condescending and drawing negative opinions is just part of human reality.

@@RyanKaufman This feels like splitting hairs to such a point that it makes the original term worthless. I think it still counts as tone policing man, even with the stipulations you've posted, since the problem of pointlessly fighting with people fighting the same fight still exists here
@RyanKaufman Жыл бұрын
@@IAMFANTROLL The original term is an argumentative one -- as in it's regarding a situation in an argument. If you decide someone is wrong because they are impassioned, condescending, or otherwise conveying their argument in a TONE that you believe to be incorrect, then you are POLICING their tone in a way to discredit them unfairly. It's an ad-hom attack, it has a point. It isn't happening here because again Matt and Trey are not disagreeing, they're just not liking her. You're not wrong, they aren't liking her needlessly and because of her tone. But TONE POLICING is specific, it isn't splitting hairs to keep it strict to its definition because the broad use you both want is pretty ridiculous imo. Someone's tone can definitely be reason for you to dislike someone, it isn't tone policing to do so. It is tone policing to say they're wrong about x or y, but if someone screams at you you have every right to say "Ok I don't like you" (as an extreme example to highlight the same usage and its failings)

Tweek x Craig is my favorite episode in the whole series mainly because it was made with so much appreciation to fans. Fact that it was made because someone on dev team of But Whole found yaoi fanarts and showed it to Trey and Mark who loved it so much they wanted to make an episode about it with fans' help is really sweet. You would think whole fan shipping culture is something any adult animation would made fun of in cruel way given it's something mainly teenage girls enjoy but South Park embraced it creating best couple in the franchise. It's so iconic, i wish more shows were so openly appreciative of their fandoms instead of insulting them.
@rhysmenmuir6356 Жыл бұрын
I love that episode too! I always thought it was great that while the show still makes fun of the crazier sounding aspects of shipping culture, it never feels really that mean. It comes across more as Matt n Trey not getting it themselves but finding it funny n a bit endearing. It's crazy that a South Park episode has such a wholesome n cute ending but it does n it's great!

I appreciate it much more so because now it is not a one time ship thriving in the fandom and how Creek has content in both the show and FbW to show that they are really a couple and present a healthy relationship.
@forest1605 Жыл бұрын
i get that but it also did have good commentary about how some people in fandoms can go too far with shipping and tend to ship and oversexualize two characters, inda similar to what happened with the voltron fandom or the steven universe fandom where it got so bad that co-workers got harrased. In general gay men are often fetishized and overly sexualized by a lot of women and non-men the same way women get fetishized and overly sexualized by a lot of men. The ending was still nice though

I dont think the ending of the Hobbit is about Wendy realizing its not that bad and can be good for people. My interpretation was that she realizes theres nothing she can do and photoshops her own picture to be left alone. Its incredibly somber and moving to someone who went to highschool during this era as a girl.

5:21:50 there is a theory that’s floated around for a long time, like season ~15 at least, that matt and trey have kind of been wanting to get cancelled for a long time so that they can move on creatively, but every few years when their contract comes up for renewal they’re never able to leave. so while they’re in the middle of a contract, they will be more creative and experimental bc they’re locked in. but towards they ends of their contracts, that’s when the quality dips and they try to push ideas that they might know won’t be popular, so that maybe they won’t be renewed this time.

37:55 the line down the middle of the screen when both cartman's are on screen is one of my favourite jokes in South Park of all time. I get what you mean about the later seasons feeling different. I feel like Matt and Trey were disappointed that the serialized seasons weren’t good and the fact that fans didn’t like the sterilization of the seasons to begin with so they had to go back to the old formula even though they were tired of it. It’s also probably why they did a bunch of tegrity stuff and less of the main 4 because they just wanted a change of scenery but fans didn’t so they were a bit more mean spirited and cynical. It seems like the covid era rekindled their love for the show because it really was some of their best stuff and the stuff after had some good episodes too.

Growing up, my parents were always very strict. They're ex cops and even as an adult, Im not allowed to swear in the house. So when I was watching this and my mom casually said "oh my God, they killed Kenny!" When she saw my screen, obviously that was a bit of a shock. Turns out my parents are pretty rad and really enjoyed adult animation of the 90s back when they were in college and getting out of school. In my teenage years, I was nicknamed 'McCormick' at school because I wore a big puffy coat and was very quiet, and my mom thinks that is hilarious. Also, chef's kiss to the editor. You're very talented.

@@stylotheepic1337 it is, I was actually really surprised myself to learn that my parents were huge MTV and Comedy Central fans back in the 90s. After they had my older sibling, they cut back on watching any of it so they wouldnt pick up anything from the show, and over the years they forgot about it. My mom still occasionally buys me South Park stuff she sees, which is really sweet of her. Even though I'm an adult, she still loves to spoil me sometimes. A+ mom.

I miss early south park, the focus on randy and serialization absolutely tanked to quality of the show. when they started the creators said they were just trying to have crazy whacky adventures with the boys, but the more people told them what a great political satire they were the more they believed it themselves and it slowly morphed into what we have today. much like R&M listening to outside influences destroyed the show.

I don't really agree with the thought that things based on current events not aging well makes them bad. Not everything has to be timeless, and it can be kind of nostalgic for the people who lived through those events to remember them with a comedic twist. I found that many of Mark's least favorite episodes were some of my tops due to my connection to that time. Enjoyable nonetheless, just my two cents.
