What makes "Scott Tenorman Must Die" so impactful isn't just Cartman Being Cartman, it's that it was really the ORIGIN of Cartman Being Cartman. Before that episode, Cartman was mostly characterized as "the whiny fat kid who says words funny and begs his mom for stuff" and was kinda pathetic and the butt of jokes more than anything. This was the official transition of his character to being the scheming, violent psychopath we know him as today.

That one is definitely pretty good. For me, the episode I would rate much higher is "Insheeption". Not sure if anyone else agrees as strongly, but I've always considered it one of if not my personal favorite. It somehow balances parodying Inception, Hoarders, AND Freddy Krueger all in one insanely absurd way that only South Park is really capable of. Not to mention it actually contributes to the lore of the show by adding more depth to Mr. Mackey's character than any other episode. It starts off building stakes, goes off the rails entirely, and then ends with an actually great and unexpectedly deep twist ending that's satisfactory after all of the nonsense. The cherry on top too for me is the humor, the Sheep herder gag, Randy being Randy, poking fun at Hans Zimmer music, and the amount of random people who all go into Mr. Mackey's dream for various reasons are all funny to me. The thing with the T&P episode is that, at the time, it didn’t matter if the episode was good, bad, or somewhere in the middle. It’s a classic because the joke was the fact that it existed. The show had basically just blown up, and people were so psyched to find out who Cartman’s dad was - the hype was in the “Who shot Mr. Burns?” ballpark… and then South Park just let everybody know we were all dumb for thinking that the answer to the question mattered. I think on first watch I didn’t even pay attention to it much; I went to the computer to hit up some of the old message boards or chat rooms or wherever people talked about TV those days. People were MAD, and the whole time there was speculation that the “real” episode would have to start eventually…. And then it just never happened. It’s hard to rank the episode now, and it almost belongs off to the side somewhere, but it’s a huge piece of the history of South Park. Great video btw… I’m still in the 200s but you’ve caught my attention and I’m going to watch the whole thing.

I feel like it's worth noting that Isaac Hayes leaving the show was not of his own doing; after Isaac suffered a stroke the church sent a letter tendering his resignation from the show, and a lot of other decisions about his estate were reportedly made during that period. Isaac went to Matt and Trey to have them pull the Tom Cruise/Scientology episode only for both of them to realize that he was sent on someone else's behalf to have the episode pulled. However, the episode already aired and they hadn't told him, which gave him plausible deniability. The Church of Scientology absolutely ransacked his estate and his son stands by the fact that his entire resignation from South Park was done without his knowledge and on his behalf without his consent, citing that he didn't think of himself as any better than the people they poked fun at in the show. I don't know how true any of it is, but given that it was son's account of the problem I doubt that he was lying about this issue, and given how cult-like the entire Church is, it does not at all sound far-fetched. I imagine this doesn't absolve him in anyone's eyes, but I think it's important to have proper context on the issue. Isaac's name was dragged right through the dirt and it does not at all sound out of character for the Church to completely destroy someone's life like that in retaliation.

The Pip episode is pretty obviously based on Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. The poor design is meant to reflect how the characters in the book looked. Not Without My Anus was hysterical in context. When it was first aired, we had waited FOREVER to find out who Cartman's father was. And then finally when the episode aired, they just randomly put on the episode of Terrance and Philip that was on the TV in the previous episode. In the context of watching it as it aired, it was pretty hilarious. Especially random lines like "I'm going to put on a pirate costume!" The other T&P episodes were not great, but i definitely would put the original one higher just for the fact that the joke worked as planned.

"Pip" has one very good meta-joke. They say right up front that it's based on Great Expectations, and it's pretty true to the book for the first 50%. (Dialogue notwithstanding.) Then it takes a complete turn with robot monkeys and body switching. The joke is that someone who had to read the book for school but didn't finish it might not realize where South Park started diverging. Imagine some high school student taking an English exam and writing that Miss Havasham used an acid attack to defend her Genesis Device. I find that pretty funny. Also there was some decent humor around Pocket.

I'm an ex-alcoholic and the ending of Stan drinking a little whiskey before going on with his day, implying that's just his life now, really fkg hurt, and it's relevant in A LOT of ways. i think part of what made south park’s peak so good and why to a certain extent they dont recapture it as often in new episodes is that in the golden era seasons matt and trey not only have funny concepts for episodes that they use to forward celever political commentary and good writing/subtexts, but they also just have a consistently really good grip on TIMING, hilarious situational comedy, and dialouge in order to actually have the establishment of those ideas pay off and reach their fullest potential. it’s not only that they’re coming up with funny ideas but they’re writing the episodes in a way that lets the absurdity of those ideas be written in a way that makes it felt very impactfully and also be delivered in a way that’s very unexpected to the viewer. always sunny is another show that nails this style of writing. for example, in sarcastaball, yeah butters creamy goo is a pretty hilarious gimmick, i laughed when it was first introduced, but the part of the episode that is WAY funnier than the actual concept itself is the ending where randy goes to drink it and just pauses for a moment and says “this is cum…..” and then the episode abruptly ends and the sarcastaball league gets shut down with butters angry dad’s dialouge of “PEOPLE ARE DRINKING YOUR CUM BUTTERS? YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF” the prime seasons have this on lock as every episode is loaded with scenes like this that make the most of every funny idea they come up with. nowadays the episodes are still good as they have a lot of really funny, creative and witty ideas but don’t always execute on those ideas timing-wise. part of this is also an inevitable consequence of taking the focus off of the four boys and making the show more serialized.

I don't know how South Park fans wouldn't be fans of seasons 1-3? Those had some of the funniest and most memorable moments from the entire show?

watched all episodes from season 4- 26 so many times, some episodes here and there from the older seasons too. l wanted to start from the beginning season 1, watched 4 episodes or so and i turned it off. the voices, the art style back then, hard to look at. and rarely funny

@jeffreym.89572 жыл бұрын
@@omardanelli2911 I just look at the strength of an episode if it made me laugh - I don't go to great lengths to identify who the main characters are and their arcs etc. It's just South Park. It's not my favourite episode either. I just thought it was a great parody of the movie (never read the book) and it had some funny parts to it. The robot monkeys were just as crazy as the Loch Ness Monster. Pure SP zaniness, which I love. I think there were enough crappy episodes from the past ten years to make sure Pip's Great Expectations never touched the bottom of the pile.
@robertpierce64362 жыл бұрын
Pip is based on the Charles Dickens, book Great Expectations. If you’re not familiar with that books story than this episode would seem random, weird and pointless. It’s like when Family Guy did a whole hour episode retelling the Star Wars movie. If I remember correctly this was that last time we ever saw Pip. Pip was that name of the main character from Great Expectations.

"Scott Tenorman Must Die" has a special place in my heart, even as a relatively new South Park fan. It was the episode that introduced me to South Park, and I cannot thank the creators enough for making this awesome show. I actually watched that episode for Radiohead (since I am also a fan of them), and I was a lot more stoked for the plot! There were some rankings I obviously didn't agree with, but awesome list and dedication. I watched it until the end. Thanks Blooms! As someone who only started watching south park this year I agree. It's by far my favorite episode. I remember my first time watching it, watching the scene where they're at the table and slowly realizing and exclaiming 'he put his parents in the chili, he put his parents in the chili' over and over. It's absolutely hilarious and fucked up in so many ways. If you haven't watched the banned episodes 200 and 201 you should really find them online because they are literally the conclusion to the Scott tenorman episode. Also masterpieces.
