Margaret Hamilton single handedly set the bar extremely high regarding her portrayal as the wicked witch of the west without even trying. the costume .. head to toe black but so much detail from her purse to the veil wrapped around her hat. the broom is unlike any other in cinema history! and her movements and gestures as she runs up and down the castle are breathtaking

A little bit of Wicked trivia: Before Idina Menzel was attached to Elphaba, the earliest workshops of the show had Stephanie J. Block singing the role. Just as Glinda was written specifically for Kristin Chenoweth's voice and range, as she was with the project from inception, Elphaba was written for Stephanie's.

Despite not being an Oz fan, Theodora was the best part of "Oz the Great and Powerful." A character like her deserved a better film. The fact Disney didn't make it an animated musical to rival "Wicked" and "The Wizard of Oz" is a missed opportunity. Oh, and Zelena was awesome! Her green skin origins was unique, but it doesn't make a lot of sense that she's experienced the most envy more than any other character.

I feel so bad for Margaret Hamilton and all the casts in the original Wizard of Oz movie. That poor actress actually caught on fire and suffered severe burns during that one fire and door trap scene!😢 But yes, she was amazing! I love her, both the Wicked versions, and Zelina from Once Upon a Time. I'm starting to think that perhaps you should do a comparison videos of other iconic characters of the fairy tales you've already covered. For example, how about comparing and ranking all the sea witches from The Little Mermaid or all the Evil Queens from Snow White?

I was watching the Wicked movie with my BFF, and I feel seriously sorry for the way Elphaba is treated. Seriously, she was the sweetest, caring, beautiful, strong-willed, intelligent, courageous woman ever, and everybody was treating her like garbage, Even her sister said not to embarras her, which down right disgusted me, as Elphaba isn´t the blame for any of that. I Really wish the wicked witch of the west weren´t evil or that Elphaba could maybe be like wicked witch of the west daughter or any relation and wanna break out from the wicked status and succseed. that would be a thrill to Watch😸

Wicked, at least Gregory Maguire's book, is based on the 1939 movie. Her green skin comes from that depiction, and that's so central to the novel.

So, there's a few possibilities for where the green skin came from. I think Margaret herself said that, it was to take advantage of the color film. To make her more striking. But, there's also the much darker theory that, it's based on a drug used on "witches" in the "witch trials". Apparently l, there's a drug that turns your skin green.... But, I think the former is more accurate than the latter. She is VERY striking with the black, almost shadowy outfit, and that shade of green.

I agree that Margaret Hamilton is the best WW and set the bar high, but I very much prefer Cynthia Erivo over Idina Mendel. She has a much, much better voice and she can act. Mendel just screams out every song, with little emotion except power. Cynthia is outstanding. And, I just loved Ariana Grande as Glinda (the “Ga” is silent), but nobody can come close to Kristin Chenoweth.

I’m going to (just slightly) disagree. During Defying Gravity, she is given the final piece of the wicked witch’s classic outfit (the cape), she is named the Wicked Witch by Madame Morrible, and she is irrevocably placed in opposition to the Wizard. Before act 1 (and part 1 of the movie) ends, she is fully the Wicked Witch. Granted, it’s the very end and we only get a couple minutes of it, but we have in fact seen Cynthia as the wicked witch.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about Eliza Swenson's portrayal in The Witches of Oz series. But it's not a good series so I don't blame people for not knowing it, the creative team had great ideas and mixed them with a lot of elements of Baum's universe but it's so badly executed, with awful CGI, bad dialogue and performances. The witch's design was a compromise of MGM's and Baum's version, having an eye patch and the umbrella.

Why do you call this "Ranking Every Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz" and then include a bunch of non-"Wizard of Oz" productions? OtGaP, OuaT, "Emerald City" and "Wicked," for instance, are not adaptations of that story. I'd have suggested just sticking to "Wizard" adaptations. Then you could have had room for Suna Selen in the Turkish version, Natalya Varley from the 1994 Russian version, Svetlana Khodchenkova from the 2025 Russian version (not released yet, but there's plenty of available imagery), and of course, the OG screen WWW, Winnifred Greenwood from the first movie version of "Wizard" in 1910.
