Isles burned Sorokin out last season. Their defense was beyond atrocious and they kept leaning on him so much until he was burned out. Combined with Varlamov's injury, and Lambert fighting to keep his job, they started him like 14 games in a row in the middle of the season while giving him no defensive support. By the time their defense got in order under Roy it was too late and he was burned out, it was easy to see. But he's been a great goalie his entire life, including the NHL for years, so I agree that I'm not worried about him. Incredibly talented goaltender.

As a Panthers fan, in case anyone (Leafs fans or otherwise) wants to argue about Stolarz because of the numbers he put up this year. I would say that, while he was awesome and very well COULD be that good, it's worth looking at the teams he played against as opposed to Bob. Stolarz generally got the starts against the lower tier teams. Also Tampa is way too high IMO. Vasy is getting more human every year, it's not just that last year was a down year, it's been down each year. And then the backup situation is a nightmare. They should be around 9-10 IMO. Vasy just continues to coast on his reputation from years' past now.

You failed to take into account that Buffalo has acquired some high-quality bottom-six players who are going to make it much harder for their opponents to have scoring chances against the Sabre goalies, which will give the team the opportunity to improve. @jasonvoorhees85454 ай бұрын
Markstrom is overrated. He's terribly inconsistent and when he's bad he's awful. He can play very good but unfortunately he's prone to bad decision making and he can lose you a game that he was winning. He has often let in the first shot of a game and killed the team before the game is even 5 mins old. His time in Calgary was 3 seasons of "meh" with one season where the whole team overachieved. That was the season where he totally chit the bed vs. the Oilers, McDavid broke him. He should have been traded out of town right then and there, it would have been best for everyone involved. He is an NHL veteran so he can play the role. If it goes south expect him to be "injured" so here's hoping NJ has a plan B for goaltending. As a former goalie I pay closer attention to goaltending than I should.

Keefe was way too easy on his players in Toronto, Berube has the right amount of sandpaper that could bring some of the core players up in the playoffs, the concern then, is depth, and until one of the core takes either a team friendly deal or is shipped out, that will always be an issue. The defense does have some good changes, they now have at least three good defensive defensemen, in Tanev, McCabe, and Benoit. If Tanev is healthy enough the defense will be an improvement with Berube's coaching style, coupled with the new tandem, it could work. I'm not optimistic, this is Toronto and I doubt until they change the core, that anything will happen.

Hardest position to rank, goaltending is notoriously inconsistent, but here are my takes: 1. Argue about the order all you want, the top 8 are a step above the rest, Shannon is right in that. 2. Shannon has an anti-youth bias. It's understandable, young goalies can be especially unpredictable. I would have given more credit to Buffalo's tandem for instance, Luokannen was that good for a long enough stretch. 3. Like that he tries to factor injury risk into the equation. He said so with Carolina, when healthy that tandem, now that Kotchetkov seems to have settled in to NHL play more, is a bit better than where it's ranked. He didn't say it, but Blackwood when healthy is quite good and would put the Sharks higher. Their defense is so bad that not everything their tenders have to do gets accounted for in publicly available advanced stats. 4. I think LA, Anaheim, and Seattle are rated too high; partly because Shannon has an anti-youth bias for some of the teams below them. Seattle is a bit inexplicable to me; both their netminders are inconsistent, even for goalies. 5. Wolf and Fedotov should be given more credit. They have been both scouted a class above every goalie prospect. Fedotov was a pure phenom in the KHL and everyone forgets how his development was disrupted because of the corrupt seeming draft evasion charges; I wouldn't read much into his performance on North American ice coming over late in the season last year, dude could very well turn into an elite NHL goalie fast. Granted, both the Flames and Flyers have very weak other options so it would take a lot of guts ranking them higher. Again, tough to rank, so much uncertainty every year.

The fact Lankinen and Askarov are supposedly on the market and no one picks them up still baffles me. Does no one have any cap space?
@MitchyM1154 ай бұрын
No it’s the fact that Nashville wanted a prospect AND a top 10 pick for Askarov. Massive overpay
@justjohnny4204 ай бұрын
Askarov has a high asking price and Lankinen seems like your average backup goalie, nothing special
@HarryRiceHockey4 ай бұрын
@@MitchyM115 That's really not that big of an overpay for a future top 5 goalie in the league. Askarov is well worth that payment, if anything it's less than what they should be asking.

@@JarradBruessel32 no he got injured in game 4 and had an injury that impeded his play from the end of march into the end of the regular season, I'm not a preds/ads fan but I do pay more attention to them than most other teams because they've got some guys I like (and the ads twitter admin is funny as shit) and I won't have a stellar goalie prospect disrespected on false information

I feel you hit the mark for the Leafs , it’s going to be season of ups and downs for the Leafs tandom . Even with the new “additions” this years version of the Leafs have a tough road ahead of them . Great review.
@wihamaki2 ай бұрын
Really think so? He's got the Oilers at #14 with their #1 goalie having a worst save percentage then both Woll and Stolarz. Leafs went through 13 defensemen during the regular season. If Jani Hakanpaa can play, with Tanev also added to the mix, you could also be seeing a much better defense in front of the goalies as well. And this isn't even counting Matt Murray who wasn't bad for his first stretch with the team until trying to play through injury and then finally getting shut down and operated on.

what goalie advance stats do you use?

I think the Boston tandem to start the season will be Swayman and Bussi. If they don't carry 3, and I don't expect they will, the Bruins are more likely to put Korpisalo on waivers to see if he can get his game back in Providence. Not much fear Korpisalo would be claimed, whereas teams low on your list (or Vegas) may well take a flyer on Bussi who also has to clear waivers. Best scenario, Bussi performs and Korpisalo plays well enough to be a quality injury fill in and maybe even a late season trade.

are there any teams that could use a third goaltender? which netminders could help as third goaltender?

Close. Would definitely switch rangers and islanders, being that Sorokin struggled a bit.

I'm still trying to figure out why Nashville brought in Wedgewood and didn't resign Lankanin, that's a peculiar move. I think NJ is a bit higher on the list, as well as Buffalo, and TB better hope that VAS can bounce back in a big way because I am not very big on Johansson.

As a Leafs fan I would have been pretty surprised if they were above the bottom row. Hopefully their goalies can prove they are ready for larger workloads!

Among goalies that played at least 10 games, they were 4th and 30th in save percentage. Leafs used something like 13 defensemen. There's a little bit of unknown, but the Leafs are looking good. Matt Murray finally going under the knife and getting his health back might even put him back in his regular grove.

I only made it to 24 because I have to go. I'll pick it up later, but for now... I wonder what your opinion of Murray is. I hoped you were going to mention him. He'll likely get in at some point dew to injury, assuming he gets his game back in the 'A'. I wouldn't be surprised if he tears up the AHL, but I'm not expecting it.

Vegas at 23 is criminally low. You’ve got Adin Hill, who before his injury was having an all-star season coming off the Stanley Cup win, and now he’s paired with Samsonov, a guy who sure had a down season a year ago, but has shown in the past that he can actually be a very quality goaltender in the NHL. On top of that, Vegas should still possess one of the best defensive units in the NHL, so don’t be surprised if Vegas actually boasts some of the best goaltending in the NHL this season, barring any further injuries.
@MarkSmith-ho5yc4 ай бұрын
As a leafs fan i was so glad to see Samsonov go. His save percentage was a dismal .886 i believe. He also let in 2 terrible goals in game 7 that cost the leafs the series against Boston. If the leafs had brought him back this year i probably would of stopped watching hockey. Lol

The Kings love to bank on over the hill players and then wonder why it doesn't work out. PLD for Kuemper was absolute mastery of a trade, but I don't expect much from Kuemper overall.

So glad someone else is wondering why Lankinen isn't signed. Guy was very underrated when he was in Nashville cuz everybody loves Saros. Even so he did at least as well and probably better than guys like Reimer, Vanecek, and Kuemper, who are all important pieces on this board. Obviously Preds are pivoting to Wedgewood but I don't get why someone else hasn't snapped Lanky up.

I would put Florida as number 2. I think Bobrovsky is on a mission. He outplayed Igor and most importantly, Vasilevskiy, who has imo nothing more to prove, in the playoffs. Sorokin has that it factor. I’m looking forward to a match up in the eastern conference 2025.
