My favorite genre is "rich people horror"... you know the ones with fancy houses by the lake/forest, uncomfortable evening dinners and everyone is a wine addict... He's an architect, she's a psychiatrist for children. And then spooky stuff happens :o

I feel like I’m the only person who loves anthologies. Whenever I watch reviewers talk about them they have the same opinion as you but I feel the opposite, each segment has the opportunity to blow me away. I especially think the framing device can make it fun, like Mortuary Collection. I always say I don’t like zombie things but two of my favs (Little Monsters and One Cut of the Dead) are zombie movies. (I’m also a huge resident evil fan.) it’s one of those “it has to be good” genres for me I guess. Body horror is the one I really struggle with personally, but I think that’s an extension of having BDD. Not feeling at home in your own body hits a little too hard for me. I really agree with a lot of your opinions overall! I’m always here for ghosts and witches!! More ghost films please, Emma wills it!

I agree with anthologies. It's true that over all they are only as good as their worst entry, but on the other hand, I don't have to love the entire movie to have found one really fun segment that kind of redeems the entire viewing experience. And Trick R Treat is probably a top 20 horror movie for me (maybe even top ten.)

Psychobiddy is my favorite subgenre. Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Straight Jacket, Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? What's the Matter With Helen? I LOVE anthologies. I always saw it as kind of a showcase for directors I've never heard of, and it leads me down rabbit holes that way. Plus I've always been more of a fan of bite sized stories. Something about the tight time frame, that leave certain questions unanswered, works well to keep things mysterious

Thanks Emma. Your lists, help me in my own thinking about horror. I have identified several more rather large genres that have been squatting in the middle of us all for years growing and growing. I'm going to do something in the next on Cabal Horror. I'm nit going to tell you what it is yet. But I'll let you know when I post it. Also I'm making a bigger distinction now between subject horror (vampires, zombies, haunted houses, etc) and mood horror (found footage, J-horror, folk horror, etc.) and these almost seem like two entirely different ways of categorizing horror films and often have films that totally overlap in other ways of defining genres. But that's the fun isn't it. Then again I have a LOT of physical copies so I had to choose between which style of genre keeping I was using. So rather than use any of the mood horror for my shelves it's all subject horror. Which means found footage films are in all the categories that they deal with, rather than a separate section for each sort of mood or style. Anyway I will be making many more pieces on horror genres.

To me slashers are the definition of Unpredictable, so I got to agree. There is a ton of hidden gems in the genre like The Burning, House on Sorority or My Bloody Valentine, but so much of it sucks like Pieces or The Mutilator. However, some films in the big franchises are great like the Friday the 13th sequels and the original Halloween, while other entries are overrated such as the first Friday the 13th or the Halloween sequels. It feels like you don't know where the good slasher films are, because of how rough some series can be and how some of the worst standalone slasher films are more popular than the best ones. It's just a mess all around for me, and I don't know if I am going into a good movie or a bad movie.

I just watched a indie horror film called The Luring and I really liked it. It's super creepy and weird but in a good way. Okay, got to get into this :) ...I expect to find out a lot about myself by filling this out, lol S- Most Anticipated: Comedy, Cosmic, Creature, Werewolves A- Good Time: Action, Body, Christmas, Occult, Witches B- Unpredictable: Anthology, Apocalyptic, Folk, Ghost, Gothic, Home Invasion, Psychological, Western C- Risk: Aliens, Found Footage, Religious, Zombies D- Group: Slashers, Vampires E- Watchlist Purgatory: Possession, Gore My approach to this, thinking about the theater experience, is to default to Unpredictable and adjust from there based on my heart rate :D I also want to say that my 'Group Watch' only isn't a dig against those movies, it is just that my friend group makes those more fun. Also, this is ordered in terms of "What types of movies I enjoy" rather than 'what is more scary or horrifying'. Finally, I think of Hellraiser as Creature, just with Body Horror elements.

@DeltaSixDJ 27 күн бұрын
I do consider Hellraiser as body horror :) My favourite subgenre is Gothic. I just adore the atmosphere and the way it isolates characters to expose their psychology. And the use of light, dark and empty spaces to create scares. The Innocents has to be one of the more underrated horror films of all time, it's so beautifully made and the lady on the lake is one of the enduring images that sends shivers down my spine. And an all-timer performance by Deborah Kerr. I'd love to see some more Cosmic Horror coming through, it's my other fave. Done well there could be some spectacular films in the future - a chance for a filmmaker with a real vision to create something awesome. I've heard that Guillermo del Toro is interested in creating such a film and doing it right - and I think he'd be the perfect person for the job. It's tricky though, it will require a sort of balancing act between what is shown and what is suggested (to keep the 'beyond comprehension' of it all) - so I'm thinking sound design, playing with settings and lighting, maybe an oceanic setting would provide the mystery and depth needed.

I think its interesting that you said you werent scared of the home invasion genre. As someone who lives alone in tiny studio, thats probably my biggest fear. I literally have no escape route besides my front door and nowhere to hide but my tiny closet. That being said, I can totally see how my situation wouldn't really make for engaging cinema unless it was more psychological, like being stalkedl. If someone breaks in with the intent to kill me, thats a super short story because I'm just gonna die in like the first 5 minutes. The end, scare time over

Obviously, there's SO many horror sub genres it would be impossible in a single video to remember and name them all, but one that I enjoy that you missed is one that I think of as "Entity" movies. I define this genre as modern/urban setting, and some sort of not easily classified being with it's own unique "rules" and lore. Examples are Smile, It Follows, The Babadook, Sinister, Slenderman, etc. It can't be stated to be a ghost or demon or based on folklore, or whatever, it's just some unnamed and unexplained intelligent thing that has it's own special rules. These stories feel like they borrow a lot from certain "creepy pastas" or SCP ideas.

Hellraiser is more Cosmic Horror than anything else, and this is because the puzzle box opens a gateway to another dimension - very much like Event Horizon does. The Thing 1982 is probably the most beloved of Cosmic Horror films, and probably the 70s version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, though yes, they could be in the Alien category as well. Bird Box, Color Out of Space, The Endless and Underwater are more recent examples of really good Cosmic Horror.

Great job in putting this list together, Emma. My tier list turned out to be quite odd in its results. Psychological Horror was the only subgenre that made it to Most Anticipated, though I am figuring "Mystery Horror/Thriller" to be a subgenre very close to Psychological. That's just showing my love of older films, I think. I have "Slasher" as Good Time, but "Gore/Splatter" at Watchlist Purgatory. I love murder mysteries, just not gory ones. 😉 Action/Horror, Alien and Creature Feature also all Good Times.

I enjoy psychological horror however I do think it's played out at the minute. This is a video game so not horror movies exactly but I'm a big fan of Alone in the Dark (the original especially) and there was a recent reboot that I also very much enjoyed. However it shifted what in the original was very much supernatural with only a thin thread of psychological horror, that was more of a misdirect if anything, into a story that focused specifically on the psychological element for much of the middle act. On it's own this is fine to me. But in a world where so much of the hyped up popular horror media (new or old) on the internet these days, is psychological horror, it felt cheap and tired to place extra focus on that small element of it. So I don't dislike the subgenre but I do think it could take a break at this point in horror as a whole, not just in movies. It might actually feel less played out if only focusing on one medium, I don't know. (side note, I'd argue Halloween actually had more in common with a gothic story than your typical slasher initially. Michael Myers was essentially a human shell for an inhuman, supernatural force of evil from ancient times. This force invades the supposed normality of a typical modern setting which becomes totally unfriendly and dangerous on Halloween night. I've always felt Halloween likely took some sort of inspiration from Dracula actually. Lots of similar elements. Ancient evil force in the shape of a man, eccentric Dr attempting to stop this force only he has any sort of understanding of, Mina/Laurie in contrast to Lucy/Laurie's friends. I'd seriously argue that after Halloween 6 that whole series totally lost itself and subsequently became more of a typical slasher than what it had been up to that point)

It really messed me up because I can’t find anything about an alternate ending being shot.

christmas horror just reminds me of how much I want a final destination christmas movie. it would be the perfect combo of campiness, and could get really subversive/ creative

Okay, so Emma's ultimate movie would be a psychological horror movie about the ghost of a space witch :p

I watched the new Netflix film, The Deliverance, last night. Not a perfect movie, but I gobble up possession movies, too!

I definitely would put Hellraiser in body horror

Zombies are definitely at the bottom for me. It would have to have some incredibly unique idea for me to be interested. Home Invasion and Body Horror are also near the bottom. Gothic, Witch, Occult, Folk, and Ghost are probably around the top of list for me.

I would put Hellraiser as Occult Body horror, maybe gothic becasue of the looks, but I'm thinking cybergoth rather than victorian gothic.

It’s not just that The Walking Dead did zombies to death, it’s also that single piece of zombie media since is just retreading the same steps. It’s been over a decade and The Last of Us is still just doing the Walking Dead over and over again!

Where would you put Anna and the Apocalypse? It's a Christmas musical zombie horror comedy.

Much to think about here. I keep thinking of the ones I really love, like found footage or cosmic horror, where I always want to give them the benefit of the doubt but 97% of the time are absolute garbage. Guess that means I’m always willing to give them a go, just in case!

Would you consider Giallo films to be a sub-genre of Slashers? And regarding Hellraiser, I think it would be under gothic body horror.
