Alright guys imma have to update my ranking a tad bit and admit that yes….i did rate JJK’s art a bit too high I still agree that what I said at the time held was true, over time I felt like his art was a bit too inconsistent for my liking and that while his art in shinjuku showdown was still good in terms of choreography it just didn’t hold a candle to culling games or shibuya in terms of the way characters were drawn Also I honestly don’t feel like gege is the greatest when it comes to making volume covers or promo art upon closer inspection I think now I’d still have it a worst like a B, but I’m still leaning towards A just cus of the things I mentioned in this video

I feel like it also may have been a bit fairer to compare manga to other manga with similar release schedules since there’s most likely going to be an art difference between monthly vs biweekly vs weekly releases just due to the allotted time.

I would not correlate art skill that strongly with consistency. I have seen many comics (particularly in unprofessional fields) that have immense consistency, but use it as a crutch for the artist to avoid doing anything challenging, or fudge their way around learning the basics. That generally is not the case here, most of these are professional artists who know what they are doing, but I would argue that the mark of a great artist in an industry like manga is the ability to either effectively use art to convey the tone and ideas of their story, or at least their ability to show the audience something new and interesting, rather than just trudging along on the eternal Shonen grind.

Its very hard to rate these stuff, because some of these manga are monthly releases or went monthly after awhile which means they can afford to spend more time on polish stuff, etc. While weekly manga focus more on getting down the most important stuff while manga's like Berzerk can release 1-2 chapters in a year where it can polish or add insane amount of details. If you are going to rate by artist skill its pretty hard too as everyone works on different styles, but sometimes you can see these cross-overs panels paying tribute to different manga's which is cool to see when they don't do anything related to their IP. One of the more unique one out of it probably has to be Tite kubo given that his old artstyle (from Zombie powder) reminds me a bit about Trigun which has its own charm, but later on he evolves his style in Bleach. Its not that Kubo can't draw backgrounds he did a fair amount in the early bleach on a pretty high level, but he chooses not to where the characters become the main focal points, However some of his new stuff today are pretty insane when he takes his time especially what he did for the TYBW cour 1 end credit in the anime. When kubo continues the manga again and goes bi-weekly or monthly its going to be insane.

We seem to have similar taste in art. Although I do feel that Naruto is the best out of the big 3, because it makes the characters feel more like human beings, and he’s such a good artist. I would also probably switch JJK and Chainsaw Man, but I like them for similar reasons. I love the Hunter x Hunter art so much. It feels like the art was made for the manga format. If you colored it, it would look terrible, but it looks absolutely gorgeous in black and white. I love the simple character designs, they just have so much character to them. And the fact that it isn’t very consistent makes the detailed panels go hard and the poorly drawn panels hurt a little less. The anime just looks so generic, and it annoys me when people say the anime looks better because the manga looks terrible. As for Shojo manga, although I don’t think the art is very amazing, I do think that it has a benefit as a storytelling tool. I feel like it is really good at capturing a mood and tone of a scene really well that is somewhat lacking in a lot of Shonen and Seinen I’ve read. It’s hard to explain. Also would love to see where Devilman and Fist of the North Star rank, as I feel that Devilman is cool and very detailed and North Star is just a better looking version of early JoJo. Also a tier list for art in anime original series like Gundam and Kill la Kill.

You gotta respect Oda tho. Most manga art becomes more messy toward the end of the series because the artists are too overworked. But Oda has been making weekly chapters for 25 years and it’s still pretty good.

Ngl, I feel like in the JJK section you made some points that kinda contradict/slightly invalidate the way that you're rankings these? Like you're talking about how the important thing with JJK is the "rhythm" of it, however when you're looking at some of these mangas that you haven't read before like BLAME, you're looking at individual pages and not as a whole? And another point on slightly biased ranking, is that all of these manga is just 1 piece of work at 1 time frame in each of these mangakas carrers, but for Urasawa and Asano, you're ranking their art as a whole when their body of works span over decades, which ofc in that amount of time, they would have most likely improved and refined their work, which could be the same for some of theses other artist, that if you were to take all their bodies of work as a whole, could drastically change thier position? Also I think not talking about paneling is kinda odd considering it's a video about MANGA art, since some of these mangakas are KNOWN for their amazing paneling work like Tatsuki Fujimoto, and CSM does even have some creative use of paneling . Also on the point of CSM, it's funny how the panel you chose when you started to talk about how CSM has stiff looking characters, it's an insanely tense moment in the manga where Denji is meant to be tense I would obviously disagree with the placement of a lot of these mangas, but at the end of the day, you can't tell another person that they should like something as much as you like something, as it is a ranking on something as subjective like art

Like I said, there's gonna be some issues cus some manga I have more first hand experience with and others I either don't or not as much. I read a little bit of blame at barnes and noble and jjk I read week to week so yeh there's gonna be some unfairness unfortunately. Just to clear things up I do generally just like jjk's art more in terms of style, panel flow, and in some cases even individual panels (although blame had some bangers especially in its' architecture). It was tough especially when some of these manga it feels like i'm giving them a taste test rather than a fully formed opinion cus i'm seeing them for the first time. There is some stuff i kinda missed of course so i chose to just talk about what sticks out to me. For one piece composition and visual clarity is a major talking point, for jjk is fights and panel flow, for vagabond it's those individual breathing taking pages. There were also some i just didn't have much to say so i'd rather not try to pad things out (the vid was already long enough lol). So if i couldn't say much about a manga u like then sry bout that either way i still had fun recording this and I hope u still enjoyed the vid

I don’t know how I feel about One Piece being better in color. I feel like sometimes it can look vibrant, and other times it looks pretty bad. I feel the black and white is more consistent. I’m sure if Oda colored it, it would be amazing. Although I think that with the One Piece remake, I think it could be the best version of the story with more color and better action. Another hot take: Hunter x Hunter manga looks better than the anime. The anime looks so generic. But I see that many people prefer the anime, and this is why people say “Togashi should just write the story, and let’s someone else draw.” This is because they only care about the anime and want it to continue Edit: which anime do you think is better than the manga? I genuinely feel like one piece in color is my fav Fs. I never encountered a panel that was bad or anything but I can see the value in black and white. They still did a good job in replicating odas colors style for the most part imo Idk if I’d say Hunter x Hunter is straight up better, but the best panels are truly peak Also to answer ur question I think demon slayer anime is better from what I experienced (not a hot take I think most ppl will agree) But I also think jjk is better as an anime as well. One piece anime has many parts that I think elevated the source material. In fact I think some of the best moments of one piece were just done better in the anime because there were extra scenes to build up the emotions. There were certain scenes from the one piece anime that I really loved but I was disappointed they weren’t in the manga 😢 What I do now is read one piece and go back watch the moment I just read but in the anime

@@fumbuswumbus I dropped the anime pretty early on at Alabasta, and I did not really notice any of the emotional moments in the manga to be bad. In fact the way he draws just brings a lot to the story imo and it’s hard to imagine the anime doing them better. Although I have seen I wanna live which is amazing in both versions, I can’t decide which is better, and the punch of the celestial dragon is just straight up better. I’ve heard that JJK anime is better, but I’m more of a casual reader and don’t really have any strong desire to watch it. It probably is great as I have heard amazing things about Shibuya anime. But as a “casual manga reader” which is a weird thing to say, I have only read it. Might check out the anime when the manga finishes in 8 months or so.

Just one thing about this specific tier list, I feel that jjk and csm art are on the same boat, where they're a.bit rough but the battles give it all, and I actually prefer csm art both because those stand out panels are just so incredible and the panelling is on the level of dragon ball that makes it super easy to read

But I do think at the very least the structure and set up of it is pretty astonishing in its field. The structure because everything is so clear and important, nothing is really wasted, and the setup because of how instinctually moving and evocative it is. Shonens are usually designed to go on forever and aren't very evocative in what their protagonists want. They don't dig deep into the human experience in that regard. FMA's premise really has that timeless, spiritual richness, in its particular blend of fear and hope, physicality and fantasy, pathos and horror. Because the premise is so perfect I think Arakawa is able to build everything else on top of it a lot more seamlessly, its telling that its one of the only shonens of its length that is never split into "arcs" by fans. The work is too unified for that. Even the manga that are better than it can't boast that. Really I'd say FMA is better at most things than most shonens. But premise and overall structure are the two things that I think Arakawa nailed so perfectly that I can more easily argue for them off the top of my head. I think my big question is, if not FMA, what's a manga that does do something super super amazing?
