Here's mine. (Since I am a guitarist and vocalist, my list is not based *entirely* on guitar playing, but it is based mostly on guitar playing.) 10. Tony Iommi - I mean, of course he was going to be on here. Without him, there's nothing, but he still DIRECTLY inspires younger musicians today. 9. Dan Donegan - of Disturbed, his playing on Believe and beyond single-handedly saved that band from nu-metal obscurity; tasteful solos, great groove 8. Wayne Static - Proof that it doesn't have to be complicated or overly technical to be good, fun, memorable, heavy and just all-around BAD ASS 7. Buz McGrath/Ken Susi - the classic Unearth duo, these guys really opened my eyes to how groove and technicality could work together seamlessly 6. Rob Arnold/Matt DeVries(/Mark Hunter) - classic Chimaira duo/trio; their ability to write death-and-extreme-metal riffs with as much groove as they have is insane 5. Jerry Cantrell - I can't even describe how much his music has meant to me through the years. He is one of the most emotive and fluid players ever. 4. Kirk Hammett - His solos are absolutely incredible, I don't care what anyone says. They are verses in their own right: singable and memorable. He elevated the art. 3. Robb Flynn(/Phil Demmel) - I know some may scoff, but I love how he writes. He has a varied writing style, but always brings it back around to make it his own. His years working with Demmel on lead were, in my opinion, the best years of Machine Head, but the latest record shows he still has it. 2. Dimebag Darrell - Unstoppable. I debated putting him lower as his later work in Damageplan was starting to show him losing a step or two, but the impact this guy made on me as a young guitarist and the impact he still has on me today is undeniable. Even the weaker stuff he did in DP was better than 95% of metal at the time. 1. James Hetfield - the man, the myth, the legend; him exposing his weaknesses and vulnerability makes him even tougher, like "come at me" Anyways, I'm sure I missed some and there's plenty of honorable mentions, but that's just who MY favorite guitarists are. Nothing to do with "the best", skill, longevity, or anything like that. \m/

So, I'm a few years younger than you, Rob, but I still got into music in the 90's during the big grunge/alternative wave. However, Alice in Chains is one of the first bands I got into (along with Metallica, Pantera, the Offspring, etc.) and, before I really knew much about specific genres, AiC always sounded like and fit right in with the heavy metal bands and I considered them such. For the most part I still do today. Jerry has a style that transcends genres, somewhat like grunge did itself. Fans of punk, alt rock, heavy metal could all hear their respective "home" genres represented in it. I think it's selling him a little short to call him just a rock guitarist, but that's my own humble opinion. \m/

A good list...not that you need my endorsement 😂...I understand you can't have everyone, and maybe sticking to a genre is a good way of doing it, but....Ty Tabor and Alex Lifeson. There are very few original players out there, but here's two. Ty especially does not get enough love for his riffs/chord choices, his tones, solos, and ability to sing (harmonies!) over some pretty crazy playing...I mean check out "Talk to You" from Faith, Hope and Love. There aren't many guys who could make a Strat (!) sound that crushing. If you're not aware of Ty, be good to yourself and bask in the glory of one of the most original players out there.

Andreas Kisser - seen Sepultura 3 times with orginal line up, Arise is in my top 5 thrash albums, love your signature Jackson. Max Cavalera - what can i say, he's a God, Sepultura, Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy are off the chain bro. Dimebag - i seen Pantera on the Vulgar tour, met Dime for a second and he spoke to me like a friend and im only fan who loves music. Eddie Van Halen - Not really a Van Halen guy, but Trey Azagthoth loves him so im a EVH guy. Marty Freidman - if i practiced for 25 hours a day and Satch and Vai trained me, i could easily play like Marty. Dave Mustaine - I THINK HE IS THE BEST METAL GUITARIST EVER. James Hetfeild - when i learned guitar i down picked everthing like a MF, thanks James i cant alternate pick to save myself (love him) Kirk Hammet - If you dont like Kirk Hammet you probably dont like yourself. Good list, Rob. Its always tough to pick top favorites anything these days. I hope the tides turn on these young players that have these amazing talents for such technical riffs and they will start to incorporate grooves and soul. I love technical music but you have to have rhythm. Its hard to watch these kids that cant play without a clicktrack and/or just blaze away without any groove or feelings. The whole point of music is to move the soul. Dimebag was one of a kind. Despite what some people believe, dime is responsible for influencing the majority of guitarist today, whether they admit it or not. He created tones and riffs that changed metal in the best ways. I completely agree about Metallica. Some kind of monster killed them for me. I lost all love and respect for them. I never liked lars or his playing but that video sealed their casket. I seen them in 05' in Jacksonville Florida with Godsmack opening and not long after that i watched that video. We could only imagine what they'd be with a good drummer

@@RobArnoldWorld I get it man. I guess it's different coming from the drum throne. Most drummers realize they are the backbone and try to up the game of their guitarist. When you have great strings and vocals but simple ass drum beats it just seems lacking. Back in their thrash days especially when at the time they had some of the most technical and diverse riffs but throughout their whole career, the drums have left voids in their music that most every drummer feels. Hell there's actually some spoof videos online of what they would be with good drumming. It's kinda funny to me. 😂

Awesome list man. I totally agree about Kirk. It also annoys the hell out of me when I see so many people bag on Lars. It's like everyone has forgot about fun and vibe and character. Too many people are just too focused on if someone is the most technical or "best". What about "the right fit" for a band. Best or not. Anyways......another top contender in my opinion for downpicking.....Tom Maxwell when he was in Nothingface. Dude can downpick like you wouldn't believe.

After watching your Comatose playthrough I did a quick search and found out about a cheap Jim Root Strat copy all black with active pickups made by Harley Benton(st20hh). Never heard of them up until that point but it had good reviews and was cheap enough to give it a shot. When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised. Tuned that to drop C and bought one of their Les Paul copies(sc450bk) for E standard. Nothing groundbreaking but they are fun to play. For me the tops were always Kirk, wylde, dime, and slash (if were talking about favorite ever)….i 100 percent owe picking up and learning guitar to kirks solos (more particularly AJFA album front to back and misery/wolf/god that failed)…i have plenty of other guitarists that I LOVE but they have alway been on my top even when i dont listen to the specific bands for periods of time

To answer your question at the end I enjoyed this video and would like to see more similar to this. Maybe even pick out your favorite tracks from specific genres and subgenres and then play a sample of the songs. Truth be told I concur with your list (even in swapping a few names around, such as Darrell Lance Abbott at 1). However all great guitarists. I love amazing lead players but rhythm guitar is the most important part of being a guitarist IMHO. Probably why I play bass primarily and rhythm guitar as a second instrument. For instance as great a lead player EVH was/IS he's 10 times better as a rhythm guitarist. Best example was when Van Halen released and toured on the BALANCE album released in the Summer of 1995. Also to add one other thing Andreas of Sepultura is definitely using a whammy pedal. Unless they were calling that effects box something back then. Also I concur with you saying Max was probably more of the riff writer until he left. I can tell by the fact all the rhythm guitar writing and playing after Max left sounded nothing like the early days of Arise and Chaos AD. Which I feel are their all time best work. All great choices but in closing in all fairness to Andreas Kissinger, Sepultura's last 4 albums are all phenomenal. Quadra, possibly being the strongest record since Chaos AD back in October of 1993. 🤘 👊

Im sorry Rob, but you are #3 in my list of favourite guitarists after Wes Borland and Brian Welch
0:53 To this day, I can't use the term "grunge" for AIC. For me, AIC is a melodic, basically dark-toned, often metal-sounding music. In connection with the latter, just think of the Dirt record. Because of their friendship with the other Seattle-based bands, they "belong together with the others" but musically, I think they are not really a "grunge" band.

yeah, as long as this is "like" and not "best" there won't be any sparks flying. there is no wrong answer. edit: SOULFLY. i saw every clevo soulfly appearance. i love max and his drummer he had that brought that world feel into the metal drumming. the late 90's/early 2k's had the best concerts like the 3 guitar IM reunion and all the ozzfest era bands and like those chimaera scrubs etc. that was the best of times. my fav is santana, because he knows the most note combinations of anyone, after that, it's the old school metal guitrists. king diamond and testament are 4 of my favorites and the judas priest god glenn tipton.. robert fripp, the human guitar sequencer and progressive genius. (i dont expect you to know about king crimson, fwiw, my all-time favorite band, above and beyond all my metal favs)

Hi Rob, I would add Jeff Hanneman to your list, plus Robb Flynn and Dino Cazares (for obvious reasons you're well aware of :-)). Then, put Dimebag as n°1, the best metal player ever, no competition whatsoever. And sorry, I'm not a huge fan of Hammett's playing at all.... so he probably wouldn't even be in my top ten list. The rest of the guys you mention I dig like yourself (Friedman/Mustaine, obviously, Cavalera who drunk me under the table one night in Paris), but I wouldn't call Van Halen a metal player, so he doesn't really belong to this list (neither does Slash for instance). So if you put the all-time Greats out of the way (EVH, Hendrix, Blackmore, Page, Holdsworth, Vaughan, Beck, Les Paul, Atkins, Setzer, Fripp etc.), my personal "pure metal" list would be : 1. Dimebag and then, in no particular order : Tony Iommi, James Hetfield, Dino Cazares, Robb Flynn, Jeff Hanneman, Dave Mustaine, Max Cavalera, Chuck Schuldiner, Jeff Loomis, Alexi Laiho and... oups I'm already beyond 10. Mostly rhythm players (not Loomis, OK, nor Laiho) but that's what I dig mostly. Cool video, anyway !

Is this a legit top 10? I know that these guys are you're influences as you grew as a guitarist, but does the list change at all if we put these on the top shelf and rate guitarists that aren't a direct influence on you're playing? I had a lot of trouble putting this question together and not sure if it coming across right lol I know you're palate may be limited by what you can tolerate within a reasonable generational bracket. Could there be a second list?

Obviously, not to trash your list as it's yours and you're more than entitled to it. I'm a huge metallica fan myself. Kirk of 80s to 90s was style virtually a god. 00s 10s 20s Kirk. No where near. He has to be the laziest lead player i can think of these days. Puts no song writing effort into the albums, his solos on the latest album were all forgetful in my opinion. To go down the route of being a live improv player, you have to be able to improv in the first place. He tends to play the same runs and rarely produces anything that expands on his playing. It really is a shame as the first 4 albums were like a bible of tasteful metal solos. For me, the last great kirk solo was on exodus - salt the wound. It just feels like he doesn't care at all about his output now.

Dude, I 100% agree about the "lazy" thing! I've secretly thought that for years... I saw them here in Cleveland early on the Death Magnetic tour and was overcome with disappointment. His classic solos sounded sloppy and played with no effort. And then all the solos on DM (and everything afterwards) have just felt like he couldn't care less. It's a shame!
@phildunn19839 ай бұрын
@@RobArnoldWorld massive shame. Even some of his recent comments about solos have been hugely disappointing. The dude had HAD huge chops. These days even Kerry King's solos have more purpose and direction lol. Think he's probably so far beyond his previous life, I doubt we'll ever get a version of kirk that inspires again....
