Can we also talk about the fact that Bossen is not held accountable for anything? He negleted his kids, has a weird relationship with Miranjo despite being married, projects his own vision onto others while claiming to be a kind king (the opposite of his vision), and when he made a deal with the devil left Miranjo to deal with the consequences of HIS contract?!

Yeah I feel the same way. Daida did everything he could, putting his face to the dirt begging for forgiveness for what he did, and wasn't forgiven. That's how it Should be played out. His treachery was unforgivably massive. But although Miranjo is #1 on the list of 'people who should be eating floor begging for forgiveness', she sure isn't the only one! By the end of Daida's early arc we verify that yes, he has 100% his own will.... But he still ordered the deaths of two people for siding with his father's final wishes, and puts a hit on his own little brother to be killed by a person his lil bro looks up to. At that moment, Bojii wasn't remotely a threat! Daida was just being a dick. And then there's Bosse. Oh man what a tool. At the end of it all, when gets his ass handed to him and starts to have some clarity that maybe yes, he had don funked up.... He NEVER begs forgiveness to his sons. Hell, he doesn't even have a moment where he looks and sees how far his boys (mostly Bojii) have come, and say he's proud of them. He has his thoughts on one person, and one person only, like she's the only tragic figure that matters. Honestly, he deserved more than a throat punch that attitude. He was a shit father, and had the opportunity to make amends and doesn't even Try.

This video captured my thoughts and feelings toward Ranking of Kings in an almost perfect way. I felt so uncomfortable with the whole "This entire countrys population are evil, cruel and horrible" all while they also were the only country shown where some people lived in circular cob homes with thatch roofs and without cobbled streets. How did a bunch of people ok that!? I understand why they didn't want to kill off any named characters in the current time of the anime but I feel like it lessend some things a bit and it also felt like Bosse (when in Daidas body) knew no one would die no matter what he threw at his former (?) friends and wife because if he thought they could die the way he acted would make even less sence ( in my opinion). I really do not like how they handled Miranjos character during the end. I wish everyone in the courtyard would learn about Miranjos past and understand that all her actions were born out of fear, hatered, sadness and by an obsession toward holding Bosse close and as much to herself as possible and while they do not forgive her they all agree that no one deserves to be tortured for eternity by the big red demon. They somehow set all the souls the demon holds free and by that the demon is also free from the way all the wishes changed them throughout the years and they turn back to the sweet little demon they once were. Miranjos soul flies away into the afterlife, maybe along with Bosses soul. No forgiving and forgetting all the horrible things she did and that Bosse also did, went along with and supported and absolutely no marrige between her and Daida. I don't know how old people become in this fantasy world but in my mind she would be at least what would be comparable with, her thirties while Daida is a literal child! How and wtf!! I wish they had stuck the landing and there are so many ways to tackle the things I and other have a problem with. I'm not trying to say that my loose ideas about Miranjo above would have worked but they could have taken the story in so many different directions all while still holdning onto the overall sweet and wholesome feeling they wanted. I am still really glad I watched this anime and I love that we got a protagonist that isn't ablebodied and I am so relived that he doesn't "push through" his disabilities and that he doesn't get "fixed". We with disabilities, chronic illnesses and injuries have to be creative and find alternative ways to do the things we wish to do and it was lovely to see Bojji do the same throughout the story. I am sorry for how long this comment ended up being but I just felt such relief watching this video and reading the comments that it sort of just happend...

I kept wanting the conflict between Houma and Gyakuza to be revealed as less one-sided than it seemed... like, maybe the truth is that the people of Gyakuza were mistreated over a long period of time before Houma decided to step in and help them for their own convenience? or perhaps Gyakuza resented the suppression of their own culture as a condition of Houma's aid? I think that plot point would've worked if the behavior of the Gyakuza people was viewed as a symptom of what trauma does to people. perhaps the Gyakuza people had been hurt many times before, and this caused them to distrust the Houma people, and lash out at them on a cultural basis, regardless of the behavior of specific individuals. their trauma caused their cruelty to Miranjo, and then Miranjo's trauma caused her cruelty to Boji's mother, and Daida, and whoever else she's made suffer. and so it goes, on and on in a cycle of abuse, until it reaches someone who is strong enough to break the chain. at that point, Boji's forgiveness would make sense, as would Daida's. it shouldn't be uncomplicated of course... those two might not have wanted to seek revenge, or pursue further pain against Miranjo, but they also might not have been content with happily associating with her either. honestly, I think the marriage aspect between Daida and Miranjo even could've been... okay? like, okay-ish? if it were given more time. but Daida hasn't had any time to get to know Miranjo outside of the huge amount of lies, and massive power imbalance that she had over him as she mentored him. I get that this is a fantasy world, and the effects of time and maturity on a person may be malleable in this fictional setting, so if arriving at a place where Daida and Miranjo are a couple was something the story wanted to do, I can be settled about that. but it can't happen that quickly and still be satisfying. Daida needs time to actually get to know her, and to reconcile who she was when he thought he knew her, with who she is now. I almost think it could've been interesting if Daida chose to save Miranjo as a snap judgement... like, he's not sure what he wants to do about her once she's safe, but he knows that his window of opportunity to save her is brief, and he's not going to get this chance again. so he saves her, but then immediately, there are all these people demanding answers of both him and her, for stealing Despa's wish, or for saving someone so controversial, and Daida hardly knows why he did what he just did. so what Daida could've done is run away with Miranjo. this would kick off a whole arc of Daida and Miranjo traveling together, with Miranjo sorting out her guilt, and Daida sorting out what he wants to do in his life, given everything that happened. this could give rise to some important messages about guilt, and how a person handles that emotion... particularly, what a guilty person is supposed to do? inflicting pain upon one's self feels natural, but that's not necessarily helpful to anyone who has been wronged in the past. forgiveness might not be something that her victims feel like she deserves, but she doesn't have to be forgiven to live better. sometimes guilt is the burden you're supposed to bear for a while, but you can still make better choices in each current moment. and I think if Miranjo could navigate that emotional conundrum well, then maybe Daida would have new, honest reasons to start finding her admirable. that's just one bit of potential that the story holds, but it's not the only way it could go. for me, it just felt rushed... like the story got the characters to the goals it had for them, but didn't take a realistic amount of time or plotting to get them there. I could respect those conclusions, if they actually had been given enough writing and justification to arrive there naturally.

What do you mean? Boji did get "fixed" with extremely high agility that would require next to no weight (and I mean less than a stick) or a crap tonne of mussel. All they did was slap on the "offscreen training" label and trivialized all of his foes and most of his problems.

I'm still not quite clear on what Bosse's motivations were post-being-revived-as-daida. It seems like he had zero skin in the game when it came to the Miranjo coup plot line. Miranjo basically took his free will forcing him to be involved in a plot where he didn't have any more wants/needs. Kind of half stuck having made peace with his life (mistakes and all) and half stuck with an opportunity for a new lease on life. But the latter would mean betraying Daida so that never seemed to be the plan - unless it was. I was waiting for some other shoe to drop and learn how this was all he and Miranjo's plan from the beginning and how he never had any love for Daida anyway or something. We never establish the relationship Bosse has with either of his son's actually just what *they* thought of *him* anyway. Which begs the question: What was his motivation for fighting Boji in the end? I legit think I missed it. I got how it was important for Boji but you usually don't make two people fight unless both have reasons. But I strongly agree with your other points! Felt like I was the only one going insane in the last 2 episodes but never could put my figner on why so succinctly.

this is just my opinion, but it feels about right. Bosse was always looking for stronger Foes to test himself against. He lost interest in this when he stole Bojji's strength. After Bosse was revived he seemed kind of melancholy. He'd once again stolen something from one of his sons, but what seemed to bring him back up was finding out Bojji's was now the strongest according to Miranjo's spell. watching Bojji struggle against Ouken probably made him second guess Bojji. Perhaps Bosse knew Ouken was a bad match but wanted to test Bojji and the others. After all as soon as Bosse died the people he trusted to keep things going all started plotting against one another.

@@trebot9292266 no, it's pretty simple: Bosse up until that point was trying to make Miranjo happy. Then he does a complete180 as he realises apparently for the first time in weeks that he actually didn't want to be revived. And why was he fighting everyone to keep being king if all Miranjo wanted was for him to live everything behind for her you ask? @@servus_incognitus He mentions not wanting to be revived like 2 minutes into being revived. Bosse took his time because he didnt know what schemes were being hatched. He had just woken up, He could have tried to stop Miranjo only to make things worse. Bosse likes to fight, we know this from it being basically everything we saw of his character. Hearing the Son he thought would never be strong was the strongest fighter in the world probably revived that feeling. Why Bosse didnt just give up as soon as he was revived? Thats simple, he's no mage. Bosse doesnt know how to bring Daida back if there even is a way(we know Miranjo being killed can do this, but Bosse does not know this). So at that point giving up means his son was sacrificed for nothing. Miranjo not getting attacked upon being revived was also explained in the show. Bosse specifically surrounded himself with caring people. People who could help look after Bojji AND Miranjo. He did this knowing he would not live long due to his deal with the Devil.

The second half of Ranking of Kings reminds me of the S5 finale of Steven Universe. After all the crimes commited by the Diamonds (including creating a frankenstein Kaiju out of the remains of their own people) they were all instantly forgiven by Steven. And the rest of the cast are pretty much forced to forgive them too because Steven said so. That resolution leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. There is a disturbing trend in Western media where most of the villains are "redeemed" even though they did nothing to earn it. Yes some of them have tragic pasts but that does not excuse their actions. They continue to act unpleasant and yet the plot demands that we "forgive them" even though they did nothing to earn it.

Western media? Really? From my experience in western media generally the villains bite the dust at the end (the Emperor in Star Wars, Sauron in LOTR, and basically every villain in every superhero movie, not to mention those that die by accident because they can't have the heroes doing the killing). On the contrary, it is in Japanese stuff where you mostly find this type of nonsense. Take Naruto for example, but also almost all anime is obsessed with giving overly detailed and emotional backstories to make the villains seem sympathetic.

Most western cartoons has the same problem I mention in my first post, with a few exceptions.

I think the problem is that this series was never as nuanced as it's made out it out to be. It's still a straightforward story about an overly innocent boy who you root for because he tries really hard despite being helpless. It's a light-hearted series, and the fact that nobody dies and everyone's forgiven is just staying true to that.

@@Mai-df8sv those are just a select few examples, though, some exaggerated. Light hearted series can still deal with hardship, and keep in mind that after that child is pushed into "the literal depths of hell", it's his trusty little sidekick who's revealed to have been saving his butt since they met. That goes back to my point about no one dying. Dark moments don't mean the core of the series isn't light-hearted.

Thank you! This was the most ridiculous ending as the second prince forgave Miranjo on behalf of everyone and their mothers. He even forgave himself on the behalf of others. The author tried to jam in a backstory for everyone that wasn’t going to be killed off, and you can almost expect them to have their own redemption arc sometime. The green giant and Apeas backstory, for example, were underwhelming and ate away at important underdeveloped themes.

I feel in love with this anime, especially when we, as the audience, found out Kage and Boiji were both cursed! I reveled in the ending, cured curses, final justice for all, Daiad's freedom, etc. But then the narrative started softening the main villain, and my fears came true... Even worst somehow! If anyone deserved to be healed, it was the insane monster, the third brother, he had no chose, though he wasn't fleshed out to well, I was hoping he would return to those who still loved him... Insanity isn't a chose, he didnt want what his father wanted, Ouken could've easily been an amazing character! Instead, they chose the girl who was mad because her father/lover????? was dead... The dynamic was uncomfortable sometimes, bringing into question the real nature of their relationship. Her backstory didnt make me cry, Kage suffered, Boiji suffered, almost all of them suffered in some way, and yet we were 'suppose' to feel pity for the girl who chose to be a monster? I always feel satisfied when justice is truly survived, but this anime got a "Raya and the Last Dragon" trust ending, and it felt hollow. The worst part, to me anyway, was Daiad asking her HAND IN MARRAIGE?! EXCUSE ME WHAT! The woman who killed, maimed, and trapped you in your own hell, that's the girl you want to marry? Also, again, the whole obsession-with-your-father doesn't bother him? I enjoyed most of it until the ending, glad Boiji is king I guess.

What also bothered me was the forgiveness given by Bojjis mom in that afterlife type of scene, where she gives Miranjo a thumbs up as if she wasn't brutally murdered for no fucking reason. Really just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Also Daida being like what 10 and Miranjo idk how many if not even hundreds of years old, is extremely wack considering the proposal. Just not a good thing to do at all. The Ouken subplot also left me completely unconvinced and made me question the point of it, considering as you said, he was so dehumanized that I felt it was just an excuse to put gory slaughter on my screen for the funsies than say anything meaningful. I like my gore but not in this context. Also speaking of Bosse, I cannot see this guy being redeemable, he has to be among the worst crimes in this show. Agreed, its a shame the 2nd half went down hill because the first half was almost perfect but maybe the mangaka rushed it because of the strict work ethic in japan. I think the village thing is easier to get around but the biggest gripe was Daida's decision with Miranjo, it seemed out of character imo due to how much more calculated he was in the first half. I hope she recieves some type of punishment in the 2nd season. That would justify everyone's forgiveness towards her a bit more.

People claim it's not nuanced are confusing the viewer's desire for retribution and revenge with justice and assuming that the characters wishes and desires should be like theirs. What exactly would the death of Miranjo accomplish, especially after visibly realizing her mistakes and showing a desire to change? She's forgiven because the characters, in that moment, wanted to help her and help her become better, rather than clinging onto the actions of the past. Miranjo wasn't the only one who did wrong, the fact that Miranjo was there to begin with was because of Boji's dad killing Miranjo's father. The show shows characters that do wrong things, but one key difference between Miranjo and others, and say the people who backstabbed their benefactors is the reason for their actions. Miranjo's desire is selfish but not born out of malice, Domas pushes Doji not because of malice but a misguided sense of loyalty to the crown. The people who backstabbed the mages did so out of sheer self-preservation. It doesn't necessarily mean they're outright evil, but rather they have lived, grown up, in a country where no one trusted each other and the way to live and survive was through deceit and thievery. They're a product, a result of a country that has been mismanaged.

I'm going to disagree that the handling of forgiveness was infantile. Instead I think the point the show is making is that forgiveness is given not to those who earn it, but is given by those who chose to move. Forgiveness is a choice we make, not something that is earned. It's not that Miranjo or any other character "earned" forgiveness. Instead I think the show is making the argument that forgiveness is ultimately about making the choice to forgive someone not for their benefit and not because they deserve it, but because making the choice to forgive is important for the forgiver. Anger and revenge are ultimately self-destructive. That's the point. After Daida and Boji see Miranjo's history and understand her better, they make the choice to forgive her not because of anything she deserves or has done, but because they have come to the point where they can make the choice to move on for their own benefit. They choose to reject the cycle of anger and revenge and become better people for it. Inflicting consequences on people who have done us wrong can be cathartic, but the point of Miranjo's story is that doing wrong to others because you have been wronged only leaves you feeling empty, a literal shell of your former self. Daida and Boji seeing what holding onto that anger did to Miranjo (or how Bosse killed an entire village in a blind rage) make a different choice, and that's why them seeing her story was important, why the parallels between all three of them are important, and why I think the story's take on forgiveness is not infantile. I think people can disagree with that take, but it's not bad writing just because the message of forgiveness doesn't resonate with everyone. I'm not saying the story is flawless, that everyone has to like it, or think it's a masterpiece, but it's themes are not infantile.

Great review and break-down of the series, you do a good explaining how Miranjo's writing has issues regardless of whether the potential similarities with her backstory and Japan's colonial history with Korea was an intentional thing or not, the narrative/writing chops behind is also just weak in general. Though I think it's less Daida doesn't have a "middle step" so to say, and more his "middle step" is meant to be his time trapped inside his mind (or his father's mind?), which understandably feels insufficient (not to mention the weird marrying Miranjo proclamation). The supporting characters easily "forgiving" Miranjo I find easier to accept largely to due to their characters not being meant to have that much narrative significance and the fact that being retainers they are already the type of characters to go along with whatever their leader tells them to. Ouken I also don't really have an issue with because I don't think he's meant to have a "middle step" Per se. From how I understood it, the power of immortality literality makes someone go crazy/"lose their soul", it's not really an instance of something Ouken had any agency in preventing based on the show's framing. And thus there is no meaningful "middle step" for Ouken to show in the first place.

I feel like they left enough loose end in the story for them to make a second season, from the story of how the Gods play into the story, the ranking system, what happens when you are #1, and even Boji traveling and creating his own kingdom. I also feel like Deida had a lot of his reservations and forgiveness off screen, but if there is a second season they could actually give miranja a redemption arc

I understand the perspectives shared in this video, though for some people (like me) this story's contrasts (and lack of lore in certain areas) give the show areas to reflect ones own subconscious energies. In other words, what to you creates a lack, a shallowness, to me gives way for inner expression. This show is pure gold, though I'm rewatching it as we speak and will consider your perspectives this time while watching

3:42 how to do explain the existence of child Miranjo inside Daida’s mind?
@TheoVorster
@TheoVorster 2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s more meant to be the inside of Bosse’s mind/soul. And the reason for a young Miranjo be in there probably has to do with why the spell keeping Bosse inside Daida’s body was linked to Miranjo’s still being alive (or at least her soul still being in the mirror).

This is just another day in the office for anime writers. Just slap a bunch of stupid backstory flashbacks and everyone will forget what a piece of shit the character is. They think backstory is the same as character development. And man how much time passes and these anime writers keep pulling the same dumb tropes over and over, I don't know if I cry or laugh. And it's honestly sad to see it in this one specifically, that seemed so different, original and interesting from the beginning. I was so disappointed.

@omarmiller6038 Art Imitates reality. If we take shortcuts in fiction, what is to stop us from taking shortcuts in reality? Which is both not ideal and much harder. While I agree that there are more important things to be concerned about. However, let us not forget how we have been shaped by media and how those who come after WILL be shaped by it

It’s so selfish of Daida to choose to rescue Miranjo instead of Ouken, he stole the wish for his own selfish gains. because of that ouken an innocent keeps suffering. like father like son I guess

this show did surpise me and started out very great with alot to offer, the reveal of boji secret power and his giant powers whitch were not really intresting or gone into with much detail, the bad guys just say sorry and all get 2nd chances everyone who should of been bought to justice just dont....miranjo gets a 2nd 3rd 4th chance she killed boji mom and betrayed the kingdom how many times ? yet daida wanted to marry her even he wanted boiji dead yet just says sorry. this show would of been alot better if at least SOME bad guys die for there wrong doings, boss was techniclly already dead so him dying was just whatever but yeah not very impressed with this by the final episode

We did? I thought Domas' redemption was handled horribly. I don't think he deserves forgiving at all, personally. (Though poor Hokuro did nothing wrong except stick by Domas, but IDK what else he was really supposed to do after being exiled, lol.)

@@7Write4This9Heart7 Domas is a cringe ass nae nae baby who thought he was cool and thought it was his duty to do terrible things for his King and Kingdom (like assassinating Boji) only to feel crashing guilt and regret right after. In his hysteria he mutilates himself (symbolically cutting off the hand that not only pushed Boji but also was used to communicate with him) and yet in his clouded mind he still stops Hokuro's execution who was innocent in the plot (because there's a fair person in Domas). After he learns that Boji is still alive, he does everything in his power to make wrongs right- which is where I want to argue about your main point. This arc is not about Boji's forgiveness, its about Doma's redemption. Its about him realizing that no matter his great deeds (like taking on the Underworld army, Desha, or even trying to committee suicide for Boji) Boji is simply not ready to forgive him. And its ok. It doesn't mean he can stop trying now- he still needs to fight for Boji, but he fights not for his forgiveness but because its the right thing to do. (sorry for the long post, I love Domas and the subversion of Prince Charming archetype they did with him. He's the youngest member of the 4 who lacks wisdom and experience, so he tries to overcompensate with idealism and strength which leads him to make dombass decisions)

Okay dude I think you judging too much of the show I can understand but it's some parts you don't touch up back how boji mother and marano mom the seaside and they talk to Murano also there's theory going around how the evil gods using the rankings of the Kings the way control people turn on each other I believe boji will break the system face off the evil gods because nobody will expect boji to be a threat cuz his disability and that will be the biggest mistake they give season 2 they will show boji but Ally is strong opponents and other races and reliance other kingdoms I can use the true king good night all nations

They did Bojji SO DIRTY. The show followed MiranHoe the whole time and ultimately became queen? Doesn’t effect my opinion on Bojji and Kage, but hated the ending, wouldn’t watch again.
