I guess that’s why lawyers, retired law enforcement, former prosecutors, etc. always say to remain silent and ask for an attorney anytime you ever have to use a weapon on another person to defend yourself. Some attorney’s have even gone a step further in videos and have implied that you don’t even need to call 911 at all in the first place after you have defended yourself and that you have no obligation to. How much of that part is true is beyond me, I just hope I never have to find out

I feel like an underrated factor for these is intimidation factor. Pulling out a knife isn't your best bet, but *nobody* wants to get into a fight with someone with a knife unless their own life is on the line (in which case, it's no longer self defense).

the only thing about pepper spray is it's environment dependent. can't use in a enclosed space (use in a elevator would be a example), and you are at the mercy of the wind to deploy effectively. also yes. if a person doesn't care about pepper spray they could have a immunity built up for it. bear mace might be more effective.

@@jasonallgood2122 bear mace is actually WAY WAY less potent than good commercial pepper spray, because bears have noses that make bloodhounds look like people. So it’s a giant cloud of what we’d consider mild OC spray, versus a smaller spay or squirt of hellfire. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to take a face full of bear spray before a fight, but if I had to pick I take the bear spray every day over the Fox labs stuff I carry.

My problem with brass knuckles is that it doesn't improve your ability to land strikes significantly like a ranged weapon. If ur attacker has a ranged weapon or is a better fighter than you then u might just not land any strikes and in that situation its useless

@@EricRamz But it's not a thing that you find often there. Maximal as a decoration. I think the chance of getting one is important too. An example if you get a blade in america it will be probably a machete. In Europe and asian are more variied swordtypes. I would prefer the europe one. Even if they are heavier and are more often for battle against other equipped persons, they have a higher durablity and when dulling you can still hack instead of slicing. But i dont have an average figure so it could vary for you, because the europe one are often a bit heavier.

Been trying to justify getting a *good* flashlight. This helped lol. Also recently took up martial arts and whenever the effectiveness of weapons gets brought up I like to try to focus on their context: historically it’s what was available and legal at the time, trying to say that they are *just as effective* now is claiming that times haven’t changed in either aspect. Their current usefulness is in applying open-handed techniques and, like you guys said, being able to grab any similar object in a pinch and be proficient enough to hold someone off. Thanks for the great video.

Would you change the ranking of a bo-staff if you use it like a quarterstaff? The way quarterstaves are generally used (held by the lower third) can generate quite a bit of power, with the downside of it needing more space. Back in medieval times the quarterstaff was a very popular self defense weapon for peasants, would be fun to explore more about its effectivity in the modern day.

Their ranking for staffs is just wrong tbf, like Mike saying having a staff messes up wrestling when the opposite is true; and saying that it can't generate much power when it can easily cave someone's skull in one hit. Maybe they're talking about those super lightweight bendy wushu kind of staffs? But any one made from actual solid wood is objectively super lethal.

I'm trained on some of these like the batons, pr-24, and taser. I think it would be super interesting to see an opinion on different types of tasers, specifically the stun type that must be manually inserted versus the projectile one. One of the biggest things people struggle with in my experience is properly judging the drop from the weight of the projectile in their aiming, leading to shots that miss or are far too high or low. Without both prongs in, it will still provide a shock, but to disable, you want a good spread from generally the shoulder down across the back towards right above the hip. Super fascinating and really enjoyed your thoughts. I'm very interested in that tactical whip, looks bananas.

Thanks for asking Seth! My experience w/ education is w/ Chinese, Malay, & Japanese approaches to martial arts from Taichi to Battodo, through some studio and dojo works. Street exp-wise, which were my thoughts while watching the video, a bball bat goes along way. Sai, staff, collapsible baton - maybe moreso the bludgeoning weapons - I'd rank higher. Others too long to yap about in comments lol Also, a big point, on top of firearms being the modern equalizer, is how deafening even pistol rounds can be, in given environments. Firearms would be S+ b/c you don't nessacarily have to be a good shot, there's allot of offensive options if one thinks of the utility of the firearm itself. Idk, jus sayin. Thanks for calling me out :] That's legit.

Lol, I took your question as a friendly inquiry, just questioning for fun. "calling out" is probably too harsh a phrase in this context. But yeah, it's all about learning & bettering your capabilities, and ability, to achieve your goals, whatever they may be - so ultimately a candycane can turn into an offensive tool to get away from attackers if need be, the will to survive & get away will always open up opportunities if the drive is there. Just my opinion.

I wish Mike had expounded on the legality and elevation in lethality of guns vs other options even in the same tier. I imagine it seems like common sense to someone like him who engages with the topic so much, but the escalation from pepper spray to a gun is massive and I seldom feel the average Joe appreciates that. Probably an unfortunate side effect of it being an afterthought for the list. Always super enlightening to hear both of y’all’s perspectives on this stuff.

I did a test with an old bike helmet. It doesn't reliably stop lead free airgun pellets or even just the plastic casings (these actually make a giant exit wound). Foam is good against blunt weapons but blades and high speed projectiles may get through it pretty easily. That being said, maybe it would cause them to lose a lot of energy. And if it's carbon, that might actually stop a knife.

@@SenseiSeth Well for the really dedicated like myself, there's all sorts of "sticks" you can train with that can bring the power which the sticks are lacking as mentioned in the vid. Metal pipes/hardwood sticks, training swords, or any other weighted stick, are the prime example, as they weigh as much as a sword/machete would (which FMA was intended for in the first place), they are safer than a sword to train with since they're not sharp, they have better power to actually hurt someone if you DO manage to find a pipe or something of similar weight and shape in the streetz, and if nothing else, they're just very useful fitness devices to give you the strength to be able to use the heavy hitting weapons that can actually hurt your assailant, or if you're a fitness fanatic, just as a weight lifting device. 😂

I have a couple steel Escrimas and after training with them I can say they definitely wear you down if you’re not used to them. The amount of damage they could do if you hit someone with one would be crazy enough to the point where I’ve told myself I’m not carrying those things around as I’d rather not kill someone on the off chance of me actually using them as a self defense weapon. They’d be amazing for assault for sure but self defense... not so much 😂😂😂 I have aluminum ones for that. Still weighted just nowhere near as much as the steel ones.
@nikolab.4065
@nikolab.4065 3 жыл бұрын
@@blazer-mp2rq Well don't carry them around to beat people up, just train with them. Boost your natural strength too in case you don't find a weapon for street defense. And if practice with heavier stuff, anything lighter than that will be a peace of cake to use. The Romans used training weapons that were double the weight of the actual weapons. And yes, they can wear you down if you're not careful. I suggest doing real short range (corto) when striking with them. Medium range at best. And if you can get a tire setup, strike the tire.
@alekskristi5268
@alekskristi5268 3 жыл бұрын
agreed. kali sticks themselves are not the EDC, but the skill gained from them is. i kinda agree on the heavier sticks, because in my opinion the regular stick is much lighter than your machete/bolo would be, its easier to transfer the skill from a metal pipe of the same length and weight as the sword. that being said, rattan is better for sparring as it's more flexible and durable

They're protection, while also allowing you to attack harder, ideally already on (no time spent to pull them out), can't be taken away, and double as.. gloves (functional even outside of self defense scenarios). On the other hand, they're not extremely useful if you have no idea how to throw a punch, and the legality of them for non-security professionals is .. shaky. Does "A" sound about right? Or lower?

I feel like that's a good point made about the usefulness of knives in a fight. On one hand, it's a very useful tool to have in your pocket when you aren't fighting and so is likely to be at hand. On the other hand, unless you're actually planning to commit to possibly deadly effect it isn't going to be much use in a confrontation. That's why the taser and pepper spray are so good, no one goes to the morgue and they are very useful in confrontations. It seems like the confidence that comes from gaining skill in hand to hand techniques is what really sets it apart as probably the best self defense choice, and if the situation calls for something more pepper spray would be my next choice. Thanks for the discussion, it's a good thing to have given some thought to.
