I hesitate to compare nioh to other soulslikes because it just excels in different areas. For me, nioh 2’s combat is absolutely sublime, especially once you really get into the meat of the systems in your second and third playthroughs. I genuinely can’t think of a better action combat system this side of DMC, but personally nioh 2 tops that for me.

Indeed; Nioh and Nioh 2 are basically Ninja Gaiden combat, but with a stamina bar, plus Diablo RPG and loot systems, with the exploration/level design, checkpoint, and drop-XP-on-death mechanics inspired by Souls. The things it excels at being are the things it does differently from FromSoft's games, not the things it does similarly. N2, especially, with its improvements and QoL polishing, is an amazing game, but it's relatively weak at _being a Souls-like_ compared to something like Lies of P.

Lords of the Fallen, for me, was a huge departure from my normal genre- I've always been an FPS kinda guy. When I bought this game shortly after release, I couldn't handle it- it was too hard, and there were too many buttons to reconfigure, and I just gave up. This June, I asked in the LotF Discord if someone would help me beat Pieta, because I couldn't, and beating her would open the hub of the world up for me. Not only did I get help with her, but I got help with more logical button mapping (I'm a keyboard and mouse guy, the last controller I used was the joystick for the Atari 2600), and made a really good friend, too. My buddy Bram and I now play this, Elden Ring, a few others, and we LOVE this game. Lords of the Fallen is one of the most visually spectacular and interesting games I've ever played. The whole dual worlds gimmick is awesome, and the Umbral world is the coolest "world-building" I've ever seen- it's truly amazing. There are now game modifiers, that include enemy density, enemy and loot randomization, and a whole bunch more. In 127 hours so far, I've crashed once, and that was because of constantly doing the ALT+TAB thing so I could follow an awesome walkthrough by FightinCowboy. I'm 127 in, and haven't even finished yet, I'm having so much fun exploring, farming, and playing "Lords of the Fashion". If you're a hardcore gamer and/or a souls-like fan, I HIGHLY recommend this game. It's an absolute blast, and even though I haven't finished even one play-through, I've created 5 different characters. This game for me gets a 98/100. Other favorite games of mine don't rank nearly as high. Give this game a try, it's absolutely AWESOME!

An alternative and simple name I like to use for the genre is "Die and Retry". That's at the core of the dark souls gameplay of course: confronting you with a fight so challenging that learning, failing and persevering are essential. But it also implies that you WANT to retry despite dying so much. That's where the fun and depth and gameplay play a huge part, as well as a universe and level design that keep you hooked and invested while maintaining an atmosphere fitting to the unforviging challenge. One would say, such last parts are important for any game, and that's true. The line between a classic action RPG is indeed thin if you move past the core respawn mechanic (even FromSoft prefer to use that term actually). Actually I need to think it through more. Edit: having playing again and finished Lord of the Fallen just a few day ago, I totally agree. I was impressed by the style and ambition and release, but the game was tiring on many aspect. Playing again, I was surprised to discover it was now very enjoyable. I still regret some missed aspects on gameplay but still, a great game that opens new paths. (One my favorite part is having ranged weapons that contrary to Dark Souls are actually powerful and an integral part of gameplay. Magic is fun and striking too, though that's a shame you can't have both at the same time. If there's one thing for others similar game to take not gameplay-wise, that would be it. Parry system was nice too, but missed the opportunity of being smoother. The after animation delay and lack of a swift counterattack similar to Elden Ring would have made it more enjoyable.)

Lies of P, for me, legitimately rivals FromSoftware's best. A thing I want to from this game I want to highlight are its non-boss and common enemies. They don't just feel like R1-spam fodder. A lot of them poise and difficult movesets which are satisfying to deflect, especially the elite enemies which offer the greatest combat encounters outside of boss fights. Another thing of not is their variety/diversity. Despite there only being 4 enemy types (human, puppet, corpse, and ergo puppet monster), the amount of unique enemies is great. Each area offers a new foe to fight. It makes the game more replayable because combat outside of boss fights is also fun too.

The look, the exploration, the umbral system, the puzzles ( I wish it had more of those). On PS5 it had a few framedrops but nothing that took me out. As for the density after the patches, I don't know how bad it was before , but I didn't have a problem with the enemy quantity at all. The combat system is fast enough to get rid of them quickly. I had a problem with the damage ranged enemies do though. You are surrounded by 3-4 melee enemies you can take out easily and then an arrow or a fireball drops out of nowhere and does 40% of your health. It's a bit frustrating but you get used to it. If you get it now on discount it is 100% value for money. You will have a great time.

I still do not understand the hate NIOH gets. For when it came out, nearly 8 years ago, it was far ahead of any other souls like. There were no other good souls like. NIOH had great story telling, fun level design, and amazing endgame replayability. More replayability than dark souls by miles and miles. NIOHs endgame hade hooked, and the amount of content and DLCs Team Ninja pumped out after release kept it going feeling fresh for almost a year after it came out. I had nearly 500 hours bt the time I put it down. So yeah, the endgame for NIOH beats all other soulslikes just for that. It's also worth mentioning that TeamNinja really felt like a studio that listened to what the players wanted. I miss those nioh 1 days. Plenty of jolly co-op too! Nioh deserves way more love

Nioh doesn't really get hate, it has a 88 metacritic, sold really well and was nominated for best action game of the year. Except I have noticed ALOT ALOT of souls youtubers don't like it for some reason. It seems like many people who are hardcore souls fans don't care about the combat system that much. Which is what Nioh really refines. It's funny because Elden Ring's builds get praised by many souls youtubers with the ashe of wars and all the customization. You can literally do that in all of Team Ninja Games.
@CrystronHalq5 ай бұрын
The problem with Nioh is that is driven solely by its combat and build customization. And these 2 are exceptional. However, everything else is pretty much subpar. If you were to ask people what they enjoyed most about the Nioh games, I can guarantee you...95% of them will say the combat. Where as Lies of P for example is driven by multiple things. It may not do anything necessarily exceptional, it does however do many things really really well. If you were to ask people what they enjoyed most about Lies of P, you will different viewpoints with some saying the story, or the combat, the characters, the art, the bosses, the soundtrack, the performance, the atmosphere, the weapons, the combat sound design, animations, level design etc etc TeamNinja also has a very bad habit of having bad enemy variety and honestly their level design aint the greatest either.
@tamim33195 ай бұрын
@@CrystronHalq I agree with you that Team Ninja are subpar in other departments, I am not sure if it's this post but I even said it. They are terrible at basically everything minus combat and design elements on bosses/weapons/enemies. But the reason why I rate Team Ninja so highly despite their weaknesses in many areas as you stated. Is because at least 80-90% of these games is fighting and they do that aspect even better than Fromsoft. I do think Fromsoft have superior enemy design and boss design but at points Team Ninja gets close to those heights. I 100% agree with you but I do think people often just point out their flaws in their games and ignore their strengths or how they keep improving combat systems while Fromsoft has been stagnant in that end minus Sekiro/Ac6. Of course no way am I saying they are better than Fromsoft.

I completed Lies of P just last week,and I went in almost completely blind bar the fact I knew it was a Souls-like. I too absolutely loved it, and I too was completely taken by surprised by how good it was. It took the Souls formula but then did it’s own thing with it. I liked the different Arms and their upgrades, and I really liked the weapon customisations. The environment was great, Fable Arts a cool idea and honestly I could go on. What I want to say above all else is that I’m glad that a lot of other people share the enthusiasm. Maybe we really will get that Oz sequel!

You definitely need to checkout Thymesia, literally the only negative thing I can say about it is that its the developers first game and a s a result is too short only around 10hrs. The combat feels amazing, honestly it might be the funniest combat I've ever played period and the aesthetic is incredible, at least in my opinion anyway, with its medieval plague doctor horror style.

okay ill be as nice as i possibly can be for this comment. 1. thansk for adding Nioh to the list in the first place, 2. now with 20 hours on nioh one, i for 1 seen 100% what you mean about seeing how more nioh 2 has to offer that it now adays seams unfinished, but i will say in my personal option your missing out, which is why point 1. is even there from what you said it did not capture you i 100% can respect this to each to there own, for me its the best in the catagory and Nioh 2 is even better. but i can easily see why you might as well not list it higer, 3. with how you made this list and the games you choose i can clearly see how much Nioh 1 and 2 differes from the fromsoft formula, 1. the story is actually told, there is no hidden puzzles or weavering web to decipher when it comes to the story building, 2. it is not build like a normal fromsoft game with having such playbility from the get go, with the weapons and such. and for sure as hell it had way more to work with then the stiff gameplay that any of the fromsoft games have to offer in comparisin. 4. i personally can see as said why the vidoe was made the way it was, i personally dont agree, but thats becouse of my own personal enjoyment, i am the same as you played mortal shell for 10 or so hours and it did not capture me, i personally had a hard time coming to terms with the weapon lack of eginutiy in code vain as well as the budy system annoyed me but after that it became such a good game, with all the complaints that have been around lords i kept away but will look into again after this vidoe and lies is spot on it was an amazing game and deffently worth praise, but out of all them the only game i come back to is nioh, from the designs of weapons from the living weapons to the Shiftling fomrs to the yokai cores, the music the maps the way the entier game is build up to the multitude of story lore and the combat oh the combat is worth praising that to me is the just the perfect package, i must say i found your video enjoyable but the low ranking for nioh was jaw dropping and i had to speak my mind, cant wait to see what next you bring op

my personal favorrites so far are: 1. Nioh 2: for its amazing combat, build variety, stellar OST, and probably the best coop system in a soulslike. 2. Salt and Sanctuary: for the perfect blend of Metroidvania and Souls styled combat and exploration. 3. Lords of the Fallen (2023): for its interesting takes on exploration, viable ranged builds, build variety in general, and damn good QoL. and 4. Code Vein: for having an interesting blend of class system and soulslike combat, another great OST, and a decent story.

Nioh 2 is my personal favorite from this list. I think something that is hinted at through people’s praise but isn’t fully talked about is the controls. The “Hold & Press” system really allowed for such a wide variety of things to do with just a standard controller. It creates almost a zen-like state where you just flow seamlessly through different attacks & actions.

It got memed on a lot on release, but I really loved SWJ: Fallen Order (played last year). The performance is pretty good now. Caveat: the only "souls-like" element of the game is the combat, and I enjoyed Fallen Order's combat as well as it's other elements.

@constantinesoldatos3 ай бұрын
@@t.t6294 Imo it's really not worth it. I've put 150 hours in it (I'm a completionist) before playing LoP (which I now have over 400 hours in) and even though they fixed a few things and added a few QOL updates it doesn't matter. Enemies are all reskinned with similar movesets and zero complexity including the bosses (which most are regular mobs with HP bars and even unique bosses use a variation of the same movesets regular mobs use. Extremely lazy.), the story is imo one of the worst stories I've seen in an rpg, shallow, pretentious and bland. The weapon system is also bland (the ranged/spell system is cool though, really nice to use and I wish Fromsoft does something similar). Anyways there's a ton of things I can say about this game but I'll put it simply. It's an excellent idea that's been executed extremely poorly. LoP is a true masterpiece and the difference in quality between the 2 is unfathomable. Ok I'm exaggerating but you get the point, playing LoF after LoP is like riding a bike after driving an Alfa Romeo Giulia (had to use an Italian car for this analogy for obvious reasons lol). Then again there are many people who enjoy it so maybe you will too, but objectively speaking I would not recommend it.

Did you not play nioh 2? I put it up there with the highest. I played it first and went all the way to the end of the depths. The combat is much much improved over nioh 1 which I played after and was done after 1 playthrough. 900 hours in 2. The combat is very complicated the further you get. Stacking skills building up your power level while also working on stacking status elements is how you really have to play in the depths. Only thing I didn’t like is inventory management and loot system. But combat wise it’s up there with the best. I loved mortal shell. It was a lot of fun. Still waiting on something new from them. It’s been a while now. Code vein I didn’t like at all. The combat felt floaty and movement felt just bad to me. Too much screen shake. Impact feel of hitting things didn’t feel like anything. I tried to like it but I stopped playing it within 10 hours. Lies of p to me is up there with the best fromsoft games and better than most fromsoft games. Combat wise it’s so precise with its deflect and satisfying with its combat mechanics it’s hard to beat for me. I love parry’s on impact. Souls games parry’s are slightly early which doesn’t feel as good as on impact like in lies. Feels tighter that way. I agree with you that it feels better than sekiro’s deflect which you can spam(not something I liked) Playing charmless makes sekiro better but still the deflect doesn’t feel as good as lies does to me. I got to the point with lies that I know which hit will break them. Just like Elden ring with its stance break system. I took risks to break them when I knew that hit will do it even before it shows the groggy state flash. I see the stance system very similar to Elden Ring. Harder hits build faster but also deflects build it as well(not like Elden of course). But I see them similar just improved in lies. Backsteps actually have s. They feel like another dodge and backstep attacks add one more variation of attack to your moveset(fromsoft take fckin notes). Make backsteps useful. Look how lies does it. I do a ton of backstep attacks in lies. They feel great. Weapon system is amazing, fables are also very well done. It makes you not spam the fable like in Elden people get into bad habits spamming ashes of war because you get a bar for it. In lies you have to earn your fable and it comes back over time. Somewhat like a cooldown system but better. You get it back faster the more you hit and the more you deflect. I love that type of system and it promotes you actually using your whole moveset instead of falling into bad habits with ash of war spam. I could probably talk about lies all day. I have nothing but good things to say about the game. Combat wise it’s up there with the best fromsoft games to me. Very good story and not really any frustrating parts you get with fromsoft story telling with things being so vague. I do like some mystery so being able to follow things so easily I guess I don’t like as much but I still do like it. Lies was one of my favorite level 1(10) runs. Very fun DLC when?

Nioh was actually my first Soulslike experience and got me into the genre. I think it has a lot to offer especially if you include the DLC:s and play it through several times testing different builds and mastering the skills and stance system. The story is somewhat cheesy, but William is a pretty cool protagonist. Nioh 2 is arguably a better game with more variety and the addition of the different soul cores from Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow which was truly amazing, that said I have put more hours into the original.

I'm the opposite of you here. Nioh/Nioh 2 combat is so good. The stances for each weapon and skill trees gives you an in depth system to work with. With the added modifiers, I hoped it would be revived a little but that too didn't do much as I don't see many people playing it now. I would really like to see a few playthroughs with some of the modifiers active but as it is not an active game and elden ring dlc coming up it might be a loss of hope.

Nioh 1&2 are some of my all time favorite games. I've spent more time on both of them individually than the entire Soulsborne franchise combined. There's just SOOOOO much replayability and a seemingly infinite number of builds. Nioh 1 really suffers from an issue of NG sort of being 1 giant tutorial, the game doesn't TRULY start until Way of the Strong, something Nioh 2 managed to fix luckily. But even with that in mind the massive amount of build variety in both games is truly staggering, you can watch 10,000 people play Nioh and not a single one will use the same build, and on top of that while there are some obvious options that are stronger (Looking at you Nioh 1 Vanilla Sloth Talisman) there's not a single option that is "Weak" you truly can play in anyway you want, even bare fists are surprisingly OP against Human enemies in specific. I can start a new playthrough in either game and have a completely different experience. Another thing that I know some people don't like but I do is the Mission system, I prefer linear games that have a few optional spots but ultimately all lead to the same end goal, like Dark Souls for example. While I do think the world of Souls is better because you feel like you're actually in the world itself, Nioh's level system allows it to have a massive amount of variety, you can go from a decrepit Shrine dedicated to a Thunder God in heavy rain with a massive underground tomb to the historical Battle of Sekigahara to a random village in Winter and have it make sense and not feel jarring. The combat is the main thing that sells it for me though because the Stance system is actually great, you're never forced to use any 1 stance, but the game does a great job of incentivizing you to use different stances, need to break a giant demon's horn to stagger it? Use High Stance, you don't have to, but the fight will be a bit easier if you do. Want a balanced combat style that favors quickly going from a strong defense to a good attack? Go Mid stance, it's sort of the Jack of All Trades Master of None stance and you can never go wrong with it, but it doesn't fill niches as good as High or Low. There a nimble fast enemy that doesn't have any poise? Use Low stance and stun lock them, it does way less damage but the super fast attacks are great for building up debuffs on enemies, and you also get a great dodge option. Imo if you ever have to force a player to do something you have failed as a game developer, Nioh's Stance system is the perfect creation of incentivizing and rewarding players who learn and take advantage of it without punishing people who want to just sit in one stance forever.

I know it was a total underdog in 2023, but Lies of P ended up being not only my GotY but in my all time top ten. I liked it almost as much as Bloodborne, which is my favorite 'Souls' game by far. The game is so atmospheric with gorgeous visuals, animations, music, and the combat just feels right. Anytime a boss winds up their huge red fury move and you are able to stop the entire thing with a perfect guard is simply peak gaming bliss. And, for my money, it has the most consistently great boss fights except maybe DS3 or the BB DLC. What Neowiz was able to do on their first attempt is phenomenal. The weapon system alone had me smiling through at least 10 playthroughs thus far.

A souls-like, to me, is any game with sufficient similarities to the fromsoft action-rpgs (which I just call Souls games, because Soulsbornekiro Ring is a mouthful). There are a number of game play mechanics, design traits, thematic elements, and specific "soul-isms" that each game can have or not, and if they have enough of them, they are a souls-like. There is also a pretty large crossover with metroidvanias in design, so depending on how you weigh design vs game play mechanics, quite a few of those can count as well (and they tend to be brought up pretty frequently). Some game play mechanics include, but are not limited to: • Third person • Stamina based combat • Emphasis on timing and spacing • "Slow" commital actions • Dodge roll/step/both with i-frames • Parry button/parrying • Checkpoints that respawn enemies when rested at • Some sort of healing system, mostly one like estus (finite but refills upon resting at a checkpoint) • RPG elements, like leveling • Currency that doubles as experience used to level up • Losing experience upon death and having to "retrieve it," wherein dying again without retrieving it leads to a permanent loss • Multiple weapons/magic/tools to allow for varied builds between players Design elements include, but are not limited to: • Complex level design (either branching, interconnected, or both), usually with an emphasis on "looping back around" • Seamless, complex world design, as in how levels are arranged together (either branching, interconnected, or both) • An emphasis on challenging boss fights • An emphasis on challenge, period ("you will die a lot") • A focus on player disempowerment and reempowerment • NPCs with limited, but often enlightening dialogue • NPC quests with somewhat obtuse requirements to continue/complete • Exploration that rewards attention to detail • Exploration that is obtuse or hidden, and usually leads to even greater rewards (entire new levels, unique bosses, key lore insight) Plot/Thematic elements include, but are not limited to: • A vague or simple story on the surface • Deep but usually incomplete/vague lore that adds to the intrigue • A focus on decay, rebirth, and perseverance • A dark, somewhat brooding atmosphere • Emphasis on cycles, antagonists typically obsessed with ending/halting/accelerating these cycles Lastly, some particular "soul-isms" include, but are not limited to: • A poison swamp level • A late game, sometimes optional, boss that is similar size to the player character, and typically very difficult • A rushed, underbaked, or disappointing last third (that usually still has a great final boss so it's fine) • Dudes in armor bosses • A nasty ass boss (leechmonger, gaping dragon, covetous demon, one reborn, aldrich) • A big animal boss (Sif, Ava, Rom?, Vordt?, Guardian Ape, lots in Elden Ring) • A difficult, usually optional, dragon boss (Kalameet, Sinh, Darkeater Midir, Dragonlord Placidusax) • An ultra difficult optional boss that usually requires specific obtuse steps to access and usually has it's own dedicated level (nameless king, owl(father), melania) • DLC that is usually the peak of that game, distilling the best parts of that game and cranking them to 11. DLC usually has the best levels and bosses, as well as new unique and creative tools for players to enjoy • At least 1 gimmick boss that either encourages a specific weapon or tactic, or are more like puzzles you must solve than "actual" bosses If a game has a critical mass of these, it'd be fair to call it a souls-like, imo. It's honestly mostly a vibes thing, sometimes it just FEELS like souls, y'know? Generally I'm pretty picky when it comes to souls-likes. Game feel is big for me, and most just feel... off. Lies of P is probably the only one that felt "right" and I'd easily rank it among the fromsoft titles, I think it's great. Nioh is also good, just feels too different from Souls, imo. Type of series I'd like to come back to when I'm in the mood for it.

Fromsoft really exells in the fluidity and easy handling of your character during combat, like you know all of their games just feel really nice.
