I really Load and Reload when they came out and still dig them today. I got into metal as a teen in the early 90s, loved the thrash stuff and the Black Album but for me when they came out with Load they were one of the coolest bands on the planet! Yes they changed but so did The Beatles going through the 60s and in both cases those changes kept the bands massive. And you make a great point about Metallica going for 70s hard rock (which is what a lot of grunge acts did too) If in an alternate universe a rock band put out Load/Reload songs in the 1970s they'd have been as big as Led Zepp!

The heyday of 'big four' thrash bands was the '80s, not the '90s. The music business tried to erase thrash in the Summer of 1991. Only acts like Suicidal Tendencies, Nuclear Assault, Rancid, S.O.D., Rage, Overkill, (and I would argue progenitors Motorhead, and Accept) stayed badass thrash. The rest of the thrash acts turned '90s Nu 'metal' quicker than the Rolling Stones & the Bee Gees turned disco in the mid-'70s.
