Anyway, the ranking I don't disagree a lot with, although I would put "Beatles For Sale" as # 12 due to the number of covers, some of which aren't the best, either. I think their time in Hamburg is often lost as developing their ability to be so efficient in the studio. Even after they stopped touring and treated the studio like a fifth musician. A brilliant example of musicians not at the top of their craft as individuals that when combined leaped so far ahead of everyone around them. From my many years of reading about music they are by far the most cited band as the biggest influence by those that followed. U never get tired of listening to them. Their ability to do every genre of pop rock blues is unparalleled.

Love the aggressive songs on the first album There's a Place and Twist and Shout. Paul McCartneys bass is also key to the Beatles sound. He was fantastic. Malapropism comes from a character in an novel 1775 Sheridan in which Mrs Malaprop would mistake words and use something similar to the correct on...to comic effect. if you have the Lp of Sgt Pepper.. When the player arm finishes the last song on the run out groove there is the line "never could be any other way" that just repeats ad infinitum if you have a manual non automatic return arm player.

If my memory serves me correctly, back in February of 1963, when I was a senior in high school in South Bend, Indiana, one Saturday night when I got home a bit after 9 PM from working as a stock/bag boy in a grocery store, a DJ named Dick Biondi was on radio station WLS in Chicago. He played "Please Please Me" for the first time on any major radio station in the USA and I was hooked on the Beatles without knowing the first thing about them. Later on, after I'd graduated we moved back to Miami, FL and shortly thereafter (I finally turned 18 in November) I left my parents' home for Nashville, TN and soon I heard the album called Meet The Beatles was being released. I had a friend in the Music Dept. of the downtown store known for getting the albums first when released. I worked third shift and the day the shipment came in he called me at work so I could get to the store early and buy the first copy (which I did). I still have it along with all the rest of The Beatles albums. My favorite music still includes some classic 50s but mostly it's the 60s thru mid-80s. Long ago, I gave up trying to rank any facet of the genius that was the Fab Four. It's not worth the effort to try. However, I did really enjoy watching this video!

Andy, correct me if I'm wrong. I think Yellow Submarine was intended to be the third film that would complete their contract with United Artists. UA did release it but still wound up suing the Beatles saying it didn't qualify as a "Beatle" film since they didn't have anything to do with its production. All they did was that live action bit at the end, which itself had nothing to do with the movie. I think they did that hoping it would fend off precisely the lawsuit they got hit with anyway. They lost and had to come up with another film, which is why they tried to make a movie about making an album, Get Back which became Let It Be. I think I've got that right? A bit of trivia, the voice of "Paul" was played by Geoffrey Hughes. He spent several years on Coronation Street (I never saw the show), and later as Onslow on Keeping Up Appearances, which I have seen and loved.

Great video Andy. Great aesthetic presentation too. Of course Dylan raised the bar for everyone - I think Country was already present in the Beatles before their encounter with him. One of George’s biggest influences was Chet Atkins. Ringo too, was a huge Country fan. When space opens for George’s songwriting, so it does for the Country in his guitar playing. The slide playing on his solo work is second to none. He’s there before Keef latches on to Gram Parsons and Ry Cooder. I’d argue that it was George’s Country chops that was the glue for the TWs. I can’t see any other Beatle really gelling with the rest of that band the way that George did. How about a video on George Harrison’s contribution to Fusion/Prog? PS. George was also the preeminent ukulele player and George Formby aficionado in the band.

Well done. Very enjoyable. Although I mist say, Magical Mystery Tour was not a UK album until much later. It was originally a double EP. Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields were released before Peppers as a single and originally intended for the Peppers album. They are not truly part of Magical Mystery Tour. Also the Magical Mystery Tour album, even the UK version released in the 1970's, was put together by Capitol from copies of copies of tapes (unlike the German version, which sounds amazing). Ranking is often personal taste and for me (having been around when each album was first released) a lot depends on the impact on me and others around me at the time. For that reason, I would rank Revolver higher than Peppers (and Rain had been released from the Revolver sessions. Peppers while ground breaking was a logical extension of what came immediately before).

Sadly, Andy, you’ve missed the mark on a number of your ranking videos; however, you nailed it here, notwithstanding your reluctance to cite Abbey Road as the greatest Beatles album, indeed, the greatest (rock) album of all time, and, yes, “The Medley,” aka “The Long One” is the greatest piece of recorded music in popular music. I was pleasantly surprised that you ranked Magical Mystery Tour at number two. Based on the lineup of songs, a strong case can be made (as long as “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” is included), but the album does sound like a compilation more than a coherent artistic statement. I also agree with you that if “Hey, Jude” had been included on The White Album that it could have ranked as high as #2, but Abbey Road is secure as the top Beatles LP and the top rock LP of all time. Finally, I appreciated your slip of the tongue in confusing - briefly - The Beach Boys and the Pet Shop Boys. I’ll take the Pet Shop Boys over The Beach Boys eight days a week. You see what I did there? 😅

Hi Andy, great vid as usual. Just a quick comment re Yellow Submarine. The Revolver box set makes it clear that, contrary to popular belief, it was actually written by Lennon. It was a heartfelt paen to his father who was a merchant seaman. He abandoned the young John to an itinerant mum whose lifestyle meant he had to be brought up an aunt. His original lyric has the heartbreaking line "no one cared." McCartney eventually helped turn it around but the melody and Idea of someone sailing off to a better life remained. Cheers !

Revolver and Let it be are my fav albums of theirs, but the best albums are the ones that refined the particular phase the Beatles were at at the time: A hard day's night, Rubber soul, Sgt. Pepper's, and Abbey road

Great list Andy. The only qualm I have with Magical Mystery Tour being so high (pun intended), is that it really is just half an album, having been originally released as an EP (remember those?). The B side is a collection of singles that were released throughout 1967. In my Beatles Universe, Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane belong on Sgt. Peppers (Sir George Martin apparently felt the same way), and I include them on my own mix of that album. Also, I would have A Hard Day Night higher on my list, as it really is the most complete and perfect album the Beatles ever recorded, with not one throwaway track on it (also, Lennon really shines vocally).

How old was McCartney when he wrote that song? For a guy who wrote so many silly songs, he could really write serious tearjerkers. Same with Eleanor Rigby. 😢

@@dbarker7794 oh I totally agree and from memory I’m sure he was only mid twenties. Incredibly mature writing rarely bettered by other lyricists who get way more acclaim.

Rocky Raccoon. Well, I was just stationed in Ellsworth AFB So. Dak. when the White Album came out, Nov. 1968. I bought the album at the BX on base, looking the the Black Hills thru the barrack's window playing the album and that song comes on. It was right on the money for me.

Dude, how did you not discuss Helter Skelter?? Talk about unanticipated consequences! And it's pretty much considered foundational to heavy metal. A monster track!

Also in the Hard Day's Night album cover you can already see the different personas of the four individuals. Each portrait reflects some persona that they define as. The most interesting is George, who has one photo where his face is a black silhouette... representing his spiritual side already here beginning to come forth.

Hi Andy loved the video! As a fellow Beatles fan(atic) I would have rated the albums somewhat differently. Sgt Pepper White Album Revolver Rubber Soul my top 4 but you make a great case for your choices

I feel like I read someone that Astrid had an influence on the With The Beatles album cover as well. Aren’t there some early ‘60’s shots of the Beatles taken by Astrid in Hamburg in half shadows?

Where is the video you said you did on the magical mysery tour film? When I was a child and obsessed with the beatles I bought the film magical mystery tour on vhs and sat down to watch it with my mum dad and brother. They made me take it back the next day
