Great ranking show, been waiting for this one. Those first three albums are essential. Also mandatory listening for any Hillage fan is the one and done Khan album he did with Dave Stewart. Outstanding.

Love Steve Hillage. Having never known about him at all ,I first heard of Steve after reading a review of his L album. When it was mentioned there was a cover of Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man, that was all I needed to know. I immediately bought the album. I agree about the top 3 but L is my favourite. The Live Herald album is a classic . Love the non live tracks too on it.

I saw Steve Hillage at a free festival in London in 76. Queen were top of the bill but SH was the reason I went and frankly I wasn't bothered about Queen. Love Fish Rising.

I grew up listening to Motivation Radio, so it'll always be my fav. Love his 70's output.

every now and then, it would be cool to hear a brief description and some recommendations regarding live albums during the rankings, without actually being "part of" the rankings...particularly in this case where, it seems, Steve has a good number of them. That little, petty, insignificant gripe aside, I really enjoyed this "ranking" show. The commentors below are correct...Anthony is an excellent choice of "co-host" for further "ranking" shows.

Man I wish I would have seen Steve Hillage open for ELO in 1977! That would have been fantastic! Fish Rising is my favorite personally.

I saw Hillage in '76 on the L tour, just superb. Next time I saw him was 2019, 43 years later, his first gig playing that 70s stuff for many many years. Still got it, what a player.
@pkats9093Ай бұрын
Thanks guys. I haven’t listened very extensively to his solo stuff but I should. Right now I put fish rising one and green two. But I am going to cheat. Out of all his solo stuff and other work with gong, etc. Kahn is still my favorite!

Amazing how like Hawkwind.Steve Hillage influenced the indie/dance/Trance scene in early 90's.Working with The Orb and System 7. I agree with your choices. Wonder what young guys think of The Ozric Tentacles
@craigburgess7105Ай бұрын
Great episode - We got into Gong the last couple of years at school and then college (early to mid 80's). That led me to Steve Hillage solo LP's which I was buying in the 90's (after my Indie and Rave years )on 2nd hand vinyl - first one and my favourite is Fish Rising (think I paid £1 for it !). Saw Gong (combo with Ozrics) with Travus on guitars a couple of years back in Brighton - 1st gig I have been to in years where I felt relatively young 😅

Also seen System 7 a few times including at Glastonbury back in the 90's.

Saw Steve on the Motivation Radio tour back in the late 1970s. To this day one of the finest concerts I've been to. His first three albums each a stone cold classic. Such an effortless and fluid guitarist. Up there with the likes of Bill Nelson, Martin Barre and Donald Roeser.

Great show - love Steve Hillage, my ranking would be the same as yours. You should also check out the Uriel album from 1968 (released under the name Arzachel) and also The Golden Vibe album released a few years ago.
@progfrogian9226Ай бұрын
Steve is great. Fish Rising is basically a Gong album. All that stuff was composed and played live between 1974/75 when Hillage was still in the band. That's also why the backup band is Gong. You can even find some Fish Rising songs with Bruford on drums during his short stint with Gong. Dave Stewart organ solo on Solar Musick Suite is among his best stuff. The guitar riff that buildup to that fuzz organ explosion is divine. Essential space rock. As essential as anything Hawkwind, Pink Floyd and Gong did for the "space rock" genre. Oh, and another cool fact : that live video recording with Bunker on drum also has future Camel bassist Colin Bass on it. He had a great band.

No arguments with the rundown placements though For To Next/And Not Or is still a good album. I have the original vinyl release of Fish Rising from when I was still young enough not to realise that writing my name on the cover was not a good idea.

Boy, you guys left out a lot of Hillage stuff: the pre-Khan album by Arzachel (the Khan album was supposedly the music for a second Arzachel album), his collaborations with The Orb, all his ambient and techno releases, not to mention the Steve Hillage Band live albums. You are showing your age, guys.
@seaoftranquilityprogАй бұрын
How is ranking just the solo studio albums showing our age? Bizarre comment. We acknowledged the Khan and Gong albums, but nowhere does this video say it’s a ranking of every album he ever recorded on. That’s a huge number of albums.
