@Christopher-md7tf3 жыл бұрын
Really, there are *still* people pulling that whole "OMG THE N64 CONTROLLER MAKES NO SENSE LUL" stuff? It's really not that complicated. Your right hand (almost) always stays on the right grip, and, depending on whether you're playing a 2D (D-Pad) or 3D (analog stick) game, your left hand is on the left or middle grip. Every grip has a shoulder/trigger button. Voila. You were never meant to use all three grips at the same time. And while this design seems unnecessarily convoluted now, at the time, it wasn't too outlandish, as the N64 was Nintendo's first real 3D console and the controller the first one with an analog stick EVER, but they also expected a fair amount of 2D games to still come out, as happened on their competitors' consoles. For these games, comfortable access to the D-Pad would be important.

The biggest problem with it is their choice on the material of the analog, which ended up bruising a lot of hands…. Also there are some format where your left hand is on the D-pad and your right hand is on the stick. Since it’s easier to use the Z button to trigger than L and R.

@@SsjHokage You use two hands. If you put one on the middle grip and one on the right grip, it feels fine. Your left index finger rests naturally on the Z button. Your left thumb has access to the analog stick. Your right thumb rests naturally across the A and B buttons, with access to the C buttons, while your right index finger rests naturally on the R button. It works just fine and jokes about "three hands" are cheap shots at the expense of the controller's admittedly unique look (which made sense in the context of releasing a new 3D capable video game console in 1996) without consideration for how it works in reality.

@ElderStatesman3 жыл бұрын
People seem to forget the controller was meant to be held in three different ways. Middle and Right was the standard config for many N64 games. Left and Right to use the D-Pad instead of the control stick, and on *very* rare occasions, Left and Middle for a select few games that were developed without using the C-buttons or A & B or the right bumper. It gave devs flexibility on how they wanted their games to be played. To be honest, I can't recall any game that had people using the D-pad and control stick (Left and Middle) for their controller setup. And yes, Diddy Kong Racing is *much better* than Mario Kart! Xmas of '97 is one for the ages. Nothing can replace that day I saw the N64 under the tree and played tons of hours of StarFox 64 and Diddy Kong Racing.

Seems people don't realize there are three different configs for the N64 controller... Control stick and A-B & C buttons. The ABC buttons with a D-pad, and the D-pad with the control stick. You use different parts of the controller depending on the game and what button layout it supports. Seems like the D-pad & AB/C buttons were meant to emulate GameBoy games? I think you were able to play your version of Pokémon on Pokémon Stadium without a GameBoy so long as you had the cartridge adapter for it?

The fact that Quest 64 was mentioned, even though it was a joke, is awesome. Nobody remembers that game. I had to turn my TV off and leave the console on cause I couldn't save. Great memories!

Wow when you got to Zelda OoT I got emotional, the memories of first playing that on Christmas morning starting in Links tree house, then out into Hyrule field...what a special game, and there is a reason why its ranked the best game over all time across any platform and console. I didn't complete the game for years and remember tearing up when I did. It was like a part of my childhood was finished.

All the games selected are good in my opinion, I just think the order could use work. Pokémon stadium 2, Mario Party, and Paper Mario should have been mentioned as well. Other than that, thanks for bringing back such great memories.

Ogre Battle 64 deserves to be on this list and it deserves to be praised as one of the best RPGs of all time. Such a compelling story with great characters, music, tons of replayabilty with its multiple story paths, endings, and character build possibilities.

I think you accidentally edited in some other list around 17 minutes. You were about to tell the world about Quest64's incredible implementation of RPG mechanics in one of the most unique, yet intuitive, hybrid realtime/turn based battle system, which also had one of the most interesting magic and magic/skill leveling systems in existence. How do you level your skills up? Well by using your skills. Do you want your defense to go up? Then take hits. Do you want to move faster and be more likely to avoid hits you take? Then run around a bunch. Literally just run around. Anywhere. There was almost always a brief moment to an enemy's attack in which it was possible to completely dodge, and if so, you could grind some incredibly powerful enemies with relative ease, and it always felt like you were some sort of god for figuring out the pattern. The most interesting part was how the terrain could actually end up playing an important role in combat, even though encounters were random, the area you fought in would still be exactly the same as where you were when the encounter happened. This could result in having very little room to maneuver for yourself, or even the enemies being obstructed and unable to attack properly. It could also create situations in which running away was problematic, as it would require getting past the enemy to get to an accessible zone in which running away was possible. Another interesting aspect was the strategy to grinding. When you first start understanding the mechanics, the natural instinct is to try to find the spirit stones as early as possible, but the way the mechanics work, the stronger you are, the harder it is to get stronger, so in reality, you want to grind as much as possible, track down and note the location of every spirit stone, and then only grab spirit stones at the last possible moment you will ever be able to access that location. Different spells and the proper positioning could also completely change the way a battle is played out. Spells would often have only a minimal amount of damage inflicted, but if you baited enemies into the proper position, it was possible to make a spell hit multiple targets and drastically increase your effectiveness per turn. You could also use your positioning to provoke an enemy into using a certain type of attack that you are more likely to be able to avoid. All of this was done without any grid system, which made it nearly impossible to learn the strategy and techniques simply by following a guide. Getting good required getting into the game and getting dirty. Those nuances made it incredibly unpredictable, and that gave it an unusual sense of reality for an RPG game.

Resident Evil 2 on the PS1 came on two discs totaling 1.4 GB in size... *The N64 version fit both discs together in an 64 MEGABYTE cartridge! Holy shit!* And the 3D graphics and animation actually looked better on the N64, only textures and cutscenes looks worse due to compression.
@ConkerTS3 жыл бұрын
It was an extremely impressive port, and though I wish we had more of the Resident Evil games on the N64, if we were only going to get one (as we did) then I am really glad that it was Resident Evil 2. I also wish Silent Hill had appeared on the N64. That game really knew how to build suspense and apprehension.

Gotta say that I agree with everything on this list. Banjo Tooie was my first game that was mine as a kid, and I loved it so freakin’ much. I think my catridge has a collective of maybe 500+ hours on it. It was great. Aso gotta say that I kiss the golden era of Rare. They had such amazing IPs.

When I was 9 I was stuck on the Deku Tree for two years. I only had access to Lost Woods, Kokiri, and Deku Tree but I kept playing it anyways. My older brothers friend saw me playing and gave me an issue of Nintendo Power that got me through the Deku Tree. I put the issue down to attempt the rest of the game without it. When I got to the Temple of Time with all the stones I thought the game was over. What happened next was a big surprise. I couldn’t believe the amount and complexity of content that game had for its time. The game didn’t just provide me entertainment, it challenged me to think more critically and creatively.

Got mine when Mario Kart 64 released and have many fond memories playing multiplayer games with friends. But I do believe it’s one of the harder consoles to go back to. I can go back to SNES and be amazed how well so many games look, but the blocky style and muddy look of so many games really stands out.
