Ranking and babbling about '70s Chicago singles.
*To be clear: I'm ranking the SINGLES, not the HITS. This list is not based on chart positions or airplay, but simply the A-sides of released singles.*

For the inevitable barrage of people freaking out that I excluded "Colour My World". "Colour My World" Was the b-side of the 1971 re-issue of Beginnings. It was never its own single. Yes, it charted and received a ton of airplay on its own, but it was still the b-side. This list is long enough without throwing in charting b-sides, which would also include "I'm a Man".

I was between 12 and (barely) 22 years old when these songs were released. Very familiar with all but five of them which got no radio airplay in my area. It was nice to put together a ranking! I'll have to do more of these. 1. If You Leave Me Now 2. Baby, What A Big Surprise 3. Just You 'N' Me 4. Saturday in the Park 5. Wishing You Were Here 6. Questions 67 and 68 7. (I've Been) Searchin' So Long 8. Old Days 9. Alive Again 10. Feelin' Stronger Every Day 11. Lowdown 12. 25 Or 6 To 4 13. Dialogue 14. Gone Long Gone 15. Harry Truman 16. Beginnings 17. No Tell Lover 18. Another Rainy Day in New York City 19. Call On Me 20. Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? 21. Make Me Smile 22. You Are On My Mind 23. Take Me Back To Chicago 24. Free 25. Brand New Love Affair 26. Little One 27. Must Have Been Crazy 28. Street Player

Great video choice! So many good songs. I'm not surprised you love "Does anyone know what time it is." It has a 60s feel to it. Which makes sense it being their first. Chicago is definitely the sound of the 70s.

Not to diss the 80's, but this era is the boss for them. Chicago V is my fave album.

I was a teenager in the 80s, I was a fan of their 80s stuff, then I dived deeper into their earlier stuff and dug that as well.

Great choice for #1. I was surprised to see that 'Colour My World' was not on the list. It was on the radio so much back in the day that I always thought it was a single (it was just a B-side). Thanks for the video. It's nice to watch you talk about music you have a passion for. I wish you'd pull the plug on your Top 10 albums of the year series as it is seems like none of you are really into it anymore for these more recent years. I'd rather see your channel come up with something fresh that you and your friends can get excited about.

I know what you mean when you’re talking about If You Leave Me Now. That song just oozes atmosphere; it transports me back to my youth every single time I hear it. It IS 1976. Amazing. As for the rest of the rankings, I’d put Dialogue and Another Rainy Day in NYC way higher than you have them. I didn’t even know You Are on My Mind was released as a single, but now that I do, it’s top five for me. Overall, though, I think I’d go for Make Me Smile as the top dog. It’s strange because, like most people who are mostly familiar with Chicago via their radio hits, that single edit was burned into my DNA, but when I heard the full album version, I liked that one much better. Either way, though, I think it’s a brilliant song, and it tops my list.

they were the dominant band from the mid 70s to the end of the decade. TV specials, songbooks, muzak, mainstream radio. still have a lot on vinyl.

The death of Terry Kath KILLED the band. A band without Terry Kath is a band without a soul. My number one is The Chicago/Beach Boys collab "Wishing You Were Here

It was the b-side of Questions 67 and 68, though it did receive airplay and charted on it's own.
